The proliferation of the endometrium in the first half of the normal cycle is caused by the follicular hormone. The transformation into the secretion phase in the second half is caused by the hormone developed by the yellow substance of the corpus luteum. The term "menstrual" bleeding must be preserved for the discharged endometrium which has been proliferated first by the follicular hormone, and then transformed into the secretion phase (pregravid phase) by the corpus luteum hormone. We report here an exceptional clinical finding of a 46,XY phenotypic female with complete gonadal dysgenesis, but who was found unexpectedly to have absence of the uterus and posterior vagina. Extensive review of current and past literature failed to confirm other reports of this variant form of complete gonadal dysgenesis.

We report a case of traumatic rupture of uterine fibroid with a haemo-peritoneum in a non-gravid uterus of a 40 year old Nigerian woman whose life was saved by surgical intervention. Treatment consisted of subtotal hysterectomy. A high index of suspicion is required in order to enable prompt surgical intervention.

We report a rare case of duplication of the bladder, urethra, uterus, vagina, and associated anomalies in a woman. As an infant, she initially underwent successful surgical reconstruction. As an adult, she developed adenocarcinoma within the defunctionalized bladder moiety. The surgical management and pathology of this cancer are detailed and the pertinent literature reviewed.

The clinical and pathological features of an apparently unique case of an endometrial cyst of the uterus are reported. The cyst was located within the myometrium of a 16-year-old woman suffering from dysmenorrhea. After excision of the cyst, patient's symptoms improved. On histological examination, the cyst most closely resembled an adenomyotic cyst.

A case of ovarian venous thrombosis in the puerperal period after caesarean section (twin pregnancy) of a 14 year old patient is reported. After removal of the attacked vein, ovary, and fallopian tube antibiotics and heparin were given. The uterus could be maintained. The problems of diagnosis and treatment were discussed.

Endopelvic fascia contributes to the support of the uterus and vagina. There is increasing evidence that alteration in the fascial extracellular matrix may lead to weakening of the fascia and development of prolapse. Other workers have identified discrete defects in endopelvic fascia that can be rectified to cure prolapse. This paper reviews fascial defects and their repair.

This is the case of an Indian woman who was hospitalized after a diagnosis of chronic inversion of the uterus with a vesicovaginal fistula. She suffered from urinary incontinence for 40 years, the condition having developed following a difficult labor. Ultimately, she proved to have a complete inversion of the bladder through a vesicovaginal fistula.

The chromosome picture corresponded to a 47, XXY/46, XX/46 XXY mosaic. The phenotype of the patient was male so the decision for male sex seemed to be justified.

A case of late recurrence of uterine inversion is presented. Symptoms included constipation and urinary retention without uterine bleeding. Symptoms resolved 3 months after the replacement of the uterus. It is hypothesized that the symptoms were related to stretch injury to the pelvic parasympathetic nerves. Timely intervention may prevent long-term sequelae.

Adenomyosis is characterized as ectopic endometrial tissues within the myometrium in the uterus. The etiology and pathogenetic mechanism(s) responsible for adenomyosis are poorly understood. Definite diagnosis is made on hysterectomy specimens, although attempts are made at securing preoperative diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging and myometrial biopsies. Definite treatment of symptomatic women is hysterectomy.

A clinical case of a perennial presence of fragments of fetus skull is presented in the article. Patient was treated symptomatically for 5 years for irregular menstrual cycles. Only USG examination and a probationary biopsy explained the exciting cause. It became evident that a perennial presence of a foreign body in uterus need not induce dramatic clinical symptoms.

A rare case of a vascular tumor originating from the uterus growing up in the inferior vena cava into the right heart with clinical signs of tricuspid insufficiency is reported. Although this vascular tumor primarily showed no signs of malignancy, consequent re-evaluation seems to be necessary in order to detect possible tumor recurrence in time.

Over the ten year period 1964-73, the causes of the high maternal mortality rate (21.6/1000) at the Goroka Base Hospital are reviewed. The leading causes of maternal mortality are sepsis and obstructed labour followed by ruptured uterus and abortion. Although it will be difficult to reduce the maternal mortality, some relevant recommendations are made.
