Cervical cancer prevention/control efforts among women living with HIV/AIDS (WLH) are socially and structurally challenging. Healthcare access and perceived HIV stigma and discrimination are factors that may challenge risk reduction efforts. This study examined socio-structural determinants of cervical cancer screening among women engaged in HIV care. One hundred forty-five WLH seeking health/social services from AIDS Service Organizations in the southeastern US completed a questionnaire assessing factors related to cervical cancer prevention/control. Ninety percent were African American, mean

PURPOSE: The authors aimed to detect immediate risk of having high grade squamous lesions (HSIL) in atypical squamous cells of uncertain significance(AS-CUS) and concomitant high-risk human papillomavirus (HrHPV) testing as negative [HrHPV(negative)AS-CUS].
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors performed immediate/baseline colposcopy on concomitant HrHPV (negative)AS-CUS cases. Pap tests were evaluated with liquid-based cytology (LBC) and HrHPV detection was performed in LBC material with PCR. Colposcopic diagnoses and biopsy results were compared with Pap test and HrHPV test results.
RESULTS:

AIM: To determine Victorian women's knowledge of the recommended Pap test screening interval and support for extending the interval from two years to three years, in light of possible changes to the National Cervical Screening Program.
METHODS: A random sample of 2,360 women aged 18-69 was interviewed by telephone about their knowledge of the recommended interval, their willingness to change to three-yearly screening if recommended and reasons for their preference.
RESULTS: More than 91% of women were aware of the current screening recommendation and nearly half (48.7%) indicated they would

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of co-infections with high-risk (HR) and low-risk (LR) human papillomavirus (HPV) in the etiology of cervical cancer is debated, as prospective evidence on this issue is limited. However, the question is of increasing relevance in relation to HPV-based cancer prevention.
METHODS: In two population-based nested case-control studies among women participating in cervical screening with baseline normal smears, we collected 4659 smears from women who later developed cancer in situ (CIS; n = 524) or squamous cervical cancer (SCC; n = 378) and individually match

The incidence rate of cervical cancer in Korea is still higher than in other developed countries, notwithstanding the national mass-screening program. Furthermore, a new method has been introduced in cervical cancer screening. Therefore, the committee for cervical cancer screening in Korea updated the recommendation statement established in 2002. The new version of the guideline was developed by the committee using evidence-based methods. The committee reviewed the evidence for the benefits and harms of the Papanicolaou test, liquid-based cytology, and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, and r

BACKGROUND: Little is known about risk factors for persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) infection in low-income settings, and prior research has not quantified the relative duration of hrHPV infections stratified by risk factors. We compared the duration of hrHPV infection among female sex workers (FSWs) by exposure to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), using a highly sensitive biomarker assay.
METHODS: From 2009 to 2011, 350 FSWs enrolled in this longitudinal study. Every 3 months, sociodemographic and sexual behavior data were collected via questionnaire, and APTIMA assays

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women in Ghana. Despite the availability of cervical cancer screening in healthcare facilities throughout the country, less than 4 % of Ghanaian women seek preventive cervical cancer screenings regularly. There is a lack of culturally relevant cervical cancer education material available in Ghana. The aims of this study were to assess the social cultural factors that influence cervical cancer screening behaviors and the health communication preferences of Ghanaian women. A focus group guide based on the constructs of the PEN-3 model wa

BACKGROUND: Primary high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) testing in cervical cancer screening shows relatively low specificity, which makes triage testing necessary. In this study, DNA methylation analysis was compared with cytology for triage testing in hrHPV-positive women. Moreover, feasibility of DNA methylation analysis directly on brush-based self-sampled specimens was assessed.
METHODS: Non-responding women from population-based screening were invited to self-collect a cervico-vaginal specimen for hrHPV testing; hrHPV-positive women were referred to a physician for triage liquid-base

Primary human papillomavirus (HPV) testing (without concurrent Pap tests) every 3 years is under consideration in the United States as an alternative to the two recommended cervical cancer screening strategies: primary Pap testing every 3 years, or concurrent Pap and HPV testing ("cotesting") every 5 years. Using logistic regression and Weibull survival models, we estimated and compared risks of cancer and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 or worse (CIN3+) for the three strategies among 1011092 women aged 30 to 64 years testing HPV-negative and/or Pap-negative in routine screening at

OBJECTIVES: High risk human papilloma-viruses (HR HPV) are associated with risk of cervical dysplasia and carcinoma. The risk is increased in patients with immune deficiency or auto-immune disease as systemic lupus erythematosus. Currently, no data are available about the human papillomavirus status in women with systemic sclerosis (SSc).
METHODS: Thirty-one women with SSc were evaluated for cervical HPV infection and dysplasia, and compared to fifty age-matched control. Cervical swabs were tested by the INNO-LiPA assay®. Serum antibodies against HPV 16 and 18 were assessed using enzyme-linke

BACKGROUND: Self-collected human papillomavirus (HPV) testing could reduce barriers to cervical cancer screening, with performance comparable to clinician-collected specimens. The ability of self-collected specimens to cross-sectionally and prospectively detect precursor lesions was investigated in an HPV vaccine randomized trial in Costa Rica.
METHODS: In the trial, 7466 women age 18 to 25 years received an HPV16/18 or control vaccine and were followed at least annually for four years. In this secondary analysis, we included all women who provided a self-collected cervicovaginal specimen six

To determine the etiology of combined high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) of the uterine cervix, we examined human papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes, methylation status of the HPV-16 L1 gene, and immunohistochemical staining pattern of Krt7 in 8 cases of combined HSIL and AIS. Overall, 6 (75%) of 8 patients with combined HSIL and AIS were infected by the same subtype of HPV in both HSIL and AIS (cases 1-5, HPV-16; and case 6, HPV-18), whereas 2 (25%) patients showed infection with different subtypes of HPV (case 7, HPV-31 and -18; and case 8, HPV-52 a

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Brachytherapy in the treatment of locally advanced cervical cancer has changed substantially because of the introduction of combined intracavitary/interstitial applicators and an adaptive target concept, which is the focus of the prospective, multi-institutional EMBRACE study (www.embracestudy.dk) on image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT). So far, little has been reported about the development of early to late vaginal morbidity in the frame of IGABT. Therefore, the aim of the present EMBRACE analysis was to evaluate the manifestation pattern of vaginal morbidity du

Cost-effectiveness analyses are an important tool for the evaluation and modification of many health care services. Given the variety of screening tests and treatments available for cervical cancer screening and prevention, the costs associated with these options and with their alternatives, and the differences in resources and settings in which these tests are applied worldwide, cost-effectiveness analyses evaluation can be very useful to help determine best practices.
