The efficacy of super-lubricous Foley catheters in indwelling catheterization: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial evaluated the clinical efficacy of super-lubricous Foley catheters in reducing urethral complications during indwelling catheterization. Focusing on addressing friction-induced injuries, the study assessed four outcomes: 1) urethral adverse reactions; 2) urethral trauma and inflammatory responses; 3) patient comfort; and 4) post-removal voiding symptoms. METHODS: A total of 114 patients from a tertiary hospital (December 2023-June 2024) were randomly allocated into two arms: 57 individuals in the experimental arm were treated with super-lubricous Fo

Global, Regional, and National Burden of Acute Abdominal Conditions in Females-Appendicitis, Ectopic Pregnancy, Paralytic Ileus and Intestinal Obstruction, and Urolithiasis, 1990-2021: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 with ARIMA Projections to 2030.

BACKGROUND: Acute abdominal conditions--appendicitis, ectopic pregnancy, paralytic ileus and intestinal obstruction, and urolithiasis--are surgical emergencies carrying substantial risks of morbidity, mortality, and long-term disability. An integrated quantification of their collective burden may help identify shared vulnerabilities in global emergency surgical systems. METHODS: Data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 were used to estimate incidence, prevalence, mortality, years lived with disability, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for the fo

Implementation of a Comprehensive Endovascular Aortic Programme and Maintenance of Clinical Excellence during Fenestrated Branched Endovascular Aortic Repair in Two Centres.

OBJECTIVE: Comprehensive endovascular aortic programmes need optimal infrastructure and multidisciplinary teams to manage complex aortic aneurysms. This study assessed the implementation of such a programme in two centres and its impact on fenestrated or branched endovascular aortic repair (FB-EVAR) outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients treated for complex abdominal and thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs) by FB-EVAR between 2013 and 2023 was undertaken. All FB-EVAR patients were analysed, including investigational trials and high risk patients with physician modified en

[Surgical case reports in the Corpus Galenicum].

BACKGROUND: The case histories in the writings of the Greco-Roman physician Galen of Pergamum have so far been interpreted primarily in literary and sociohistoric terms. Analysis focused on the medical aspects is still incomplete. QUESTION: Which surgical competences do the Galenic case reports communicate? MATERIAL AND METHOD: The 358 Galenic case histories were studied for anamnestic, diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic statements on surgical diseases. RESULTS: In 38 case reports surgical disorders are presented. Most of the histories are found in the works On the composition of drugs

Retrievable inferior vena cava filters: initial clinical results.

Anticoagulation is the accepted therapy for patients with thromboembolic disease. When contraindications to anticoagulant therapy are present, however, interruption of the inferior vena cava (IVC) may prevent pulmonary embolism (PE). The objective of this study was to report our early technical and clinical results with retrievable IVC filters (IVCFs) for the prevention of PE. One hundred and twenty-seven multitrauma patients between December 1, 2002, and December 31, 2004, underwent placement of Gunther-Tulip (n = 49), Recovery (n = 41), or OptEase (n = 37) retrievable IVCFs under real-time i

Endovascular stent graft treatment of a traumatic aortocaval fistula.

Aortocaval fistula (ACF) is an infrequently reported sequela of trauma. Most ACF have been repaired via an open approach. During the past 10 years, there has been one reported case of spontaneous ACF and two cases of traumatic ACF repaired using an endovascular technique. We present a third case of traumatic ACF repaired with an endovascular stent graft. A 40-year-old male sustained two gunshot wounds to the right chest and one to the right upper abdomen. He was taken from the emergency department directly to the operating room, where an exploratory laparotomy was performed. Through-and-throug

Identifying Patients at Risk for Venous Thromboembolic Events After Isolated Upper Extremity Trauma: A Predictive Scale.

Previous studies have defined risk factors for development of venous thromboembolisms (VTEs) among patients with lower extremity orthopedic trauma. Limited data exist on this risk after upper extremity orthopedic trauma. A total of 269,137 incidents of upper extremity orthopedic trauma (fractures of the clavicle, scapula, humerus, elbow, or lower arm) were identified in the State Inpatient Database for 4 states included in the analysis (California, Florida, New York, and Washington) from 2006 to 2014. These patients were split into 2 cohorts, a derivation cohort (California and New York) and a

Effect of Furosemide under Hyperchloremic Acidosis on Intraoperative Oliguria and Acute Kidney Injury in Patients with Normal Renal Function.

BACKGROUND: Renal function tends to deteriorate in a hyperchloremic acidifying environment, which is reflected by a decrease in the difference between sodium and chloride. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of furosemide administered under hyperchloremic acidosis on intraoperative oliguria and acute kidney injury in patients with preoperatively normal renal function. METHODS: In patients undergoing abdominal or orthopedic surgeries (April 2010-November 2018), we retrospectively identified patients who preoperatively had a normal renal function but experienced intraoperative oliguria under hyp

Respiratory functional and motor control deficits in children with spinal cord injury.

Children with spinal cord injury (SCI) are at high risk for developing complications due to respiratory motor control deficits. However, underlying mechanisms of these abnormalities with respect to age, development, and injury characteristics are unclear. To evaluate the effect of SCI and age on respiratory motor control in children with SCI, we compared pulmonary function and respiratory motor control outcome measures in healthy typically developing (TD) children to age-matched children with chronic SCI. We hypothesized that the deficits in respiratory functional performance in children with
