Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is thought to reduce calcium absorption from the gut. Here, we report the case of a patient with a RYGB, who developed primary hypoparathyroidism after a total thyroidectomy, leading to recalcitrant hypocalcaemia. Despite aggressive oral calcium and calcitriol supplementation, she remained hypocalcaemic and required intravenous (IV) calcium supplementation to control her symptoms, and to keep calcium serum levels within an acceptable range. Retinoic acid is a physiological compound of human blood. Blood levels range from 1000 to 7000 pg/mL (usually 1500-5000 pg/mL). Results of studies on absorption of topical retinoic acid in laboratory animals, although rather conflicting, demonstrate that it induces plasma concentrations which are well below concentrations caused by non-teratogenic oral doses. Low crystalline and crystalline polyvinyl alcohol-methyl acrylate (PVA-MA) copolymers were examined, because of their excellent flow and compressibility properties, as matrices for sustained-release tablets using phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride (PPA.HCl) as a model drug. Forty-three patients suffering from familial amyloidosis with polyneuropathy were examined by means of barium meal, barium follow through, barium enema, cholecystogram, and gastroscopy. The findings were reviewed with respect to the presence of steatorrhea and impaired d-xylose absorption. Seven patients had gastric stasis (without gross anatomical changes) on barium meal examination and seven others on the gastroscopy. The equipment size and energy penalties of carbon-capture processes can be reduced substantially by using rotating packed beds (RPB) and high-concentration amines. There is an urgent need for improved respiratory surveillance of preterm infants. Gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy (GASMAS) is emerging as a potential clinical cutaneous monitoring tool of lung functions in neonates. A challenge in the clinical translation of GASMAS is to obtain sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratios in the measurements, since the light attenuation is high in human tissue. Previous GASMAS studies on piglets have shown higher signal quality with an internal source, as more light propagates through the lung and the loss due to scattering and absorption is less.
