Quantitative Evaluation of Tendon Gliding Sounds and Their Classification Using Deep Learning Models.

This study aims to develop and evaluate a deep learning (DL) model for classifying tendon gliding sounds recorded using digital stethoscopes (Nexteto, ShareMedical, Japan, Nagoya). Specifically, we investigate whether differences in tendon excursion and biomechanics produce distinct acoustic signatures that can be identified through spectrogram analysis and machine learning (ML). Tendon disorders often present characteristic tactile and acoustic features, such as clicking or resistance during movement. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and ML have achieved significant success in me

Detecting emotion in individuals with disorders of consciousness: a pilot study of heart rate deceleration on affective auditory stimuli.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate heart rate deceleration on affective auditory stimulations as an objective marker of purposeful affective behaviour, as used in the diagnosis of minimally conscious state (MCS) in brain-injured individuals with disorders of consciousness (DoC), awake but unable to communicate. METHODS: We recorded the heart rate of participants (14 healthy controls and 10 brain injured individuals, conscious or with DoC) on repeated exposure to a random sequence of three emotional sounds of neutral, positive, and negative valence, in an unconditioned manner (experiment 1) or in a trace-

Novel dataset and model for restroom sound event classification.

This study presents a novel privacy-preserving deep learning framework for accurately classifying fine-grained hygiene and water-usage events in restroom environments. Leveraging a comprehensive, curated dataset comprising approximately 460 min of stereo audio recordings from five acoustically diverse bathrooms, our method robustly identifies 11 distinct events, including nuanced variations in faucet counts and flow rates, toilet flushing, and handwashing activities. Stereo audio inputs were transformed into triple-channel Mel spectrograms using an adaptive one-dimensional convolutional neural

Temporalis Muscle Flap for Reconstruction Following Lateral Temporal Bone Resection: Anatomical Study and Technical Note.

There are no standardized guidelines for reconstructive surgery of large temporal bone defects following lateral temporal bone resection for external auditory (acoustic) meatus carcinoma. Filling the defect with well-vascularized tissue is important for large tissue defects to promote wound healing and prevent infection postoperatively. Patients with malignant tumors of the external acoustic meatus requiring lateral temporal bone resection may sometimes necessitate postoperative adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Therefore, it is essential to facilitate wound healing and initiate adjuvant therapy pro

Reflection function, reflectance, and area function measurements in ears of children and adults.

The main experiment concerned time-domain measurements of the acoustical reflection function (RF) of the human ear in adults and children (aged 5 to 8 years) using a probe inserted into the ear canal. This RF was used to calculate the area function of the ear canal versus distance along its centerline. Acoustical reflectance was calculated in the frequency domain from the RF, as was the difference in sound pressure level near the tympanic membrane relative to the probe tip. Group responses in area function, total ear-canal length, absorbance and group delay, and admittance magnitude and phase

The response of sea turtles to vocalizations opens new perspectives to reduce their bycatch.

Incidental capture of non-target species poses a pervasive threat to many marine species, with sometimes devastating consequences for both fisheries and conservation efforts. Because of the well-known importance of vocalizations in cetaceans, acoustic deterrents have been extensively used for these species. In contrast, acoustic communication for sea turtles has been considered negligible, and this question has been largely unexplored. Addressing this challenge therefore requires a comprehensive understanding of sea turtles' responses to sensory signals. In this study, we scrutinized the avenu

Perceptual Adaptation to Noise-Vocoded Speech by Lip-Read Information: No Difference between Dyslexic and Typical Readers.

Auditory speech can be difficult to understand but seeing the articulatory movements of a speaker can drastically improve spoken-word recognition and, on the longer-term, it helps listeners to adapt to acoustically distorted speech. Given that individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD) have sometimes been reported to rely less on lip-read speech than typical readers, we examined lip-read-driven adaptation to distorted speech in a group of adults with DD ( N = 29) and a comparison group of typical readers ( N = 29). Participants were presented with acoustically distorted Dutch words (six-chan

Earable Multimodal Sensing and Stimulation: A Prospective Towards Unobtrusive Closed-Loop Biofeedback.

The human ear has emerged as a bidirectional gateway to the brain's and body's signals. Recent advances in around-the-ear and in-ear sensors have enabled the assessment of biomarkers and physiomarkers derived from brain and cardiac activity using ear-electroencephalography (ear-EEG), photoplethysmography (ear-PPG), and chemical sensing of analytes from the ear, with ear-EEG having been taken beyond-the-lab to outer space. Parallel advances in non-invasive and minimally invasive brain stimulation techniques have leveraged the ear's access to two cranial nerves to modulate brain and body activit

Pathogenesis and New Pharmacological Approaches to Noise-Induced Hearing Loss: A Systematic Review.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is responsible for significant adverse effects on cognition, quality of life and work, social relationships, motor skills, and other psychological aspects. The severity of NIHL depends on individual patient characteristics, sound intensity, and mainly the duration of sound exposure. NIHL leads to the production of a reactive oxygen (ROS) inflammatory response and the activation of apoptotic pathways, DNA fragmentation, and cell death. In this situation, antioxidants can interact with free radicals as well as anti-apoptotics or anti-inflammatory substances and

Combined multi-session transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) and language skills training improves individual gamma band activity and literacy skills in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by the pathologically diminished ability to acquire reading and spelling skills. Accurate processing of acoustic information at the phonemic scale is crucial for successful sound-to-letter-mapping which, in turn, is elemental in reading and spelling. Altered activation patterns in the auditory cortex are thought to provide the neurophysiological basis for the inaccurate phonemic perception. Recently, transcranial electrical stimulation has been shown to be an effective method to ameliorate cortical activation patterns in the auditory cortex. In a sample

A loss-of-function variant in canine GLRA1 associates with a neurological disorder resembling human hyperekplexia.

Hereditary hyperekplexia is a rare neuronal disorder characterized by an exaggerated startle response to sudden tactile or acoustic stimuli. In this study, we present a Miniature Australian Shepherd family showing clinical signs, which have genetic and phenotypic similarities with human hereditary hyperekplexia: episodes of muscle stiffness that could occasionally be triggered by acoustic stimuli. Whole genome sequence data analysis of two affected dogs revealed a 36-bp deletion spanning the exon-intron boundary in the glycine receptor alpha 1 (GLRA1) gene. Further validation in pedigree sampl

Intracranial inflammatory polyp with cerebellopontine compression and leptomeningitis secondary to chronic otitis in a red kangaroo.

CNS lesions associated with chronic otitis have not been reported in red kangaroos (Macropus rufus), to our knowledge. Here we describe an intracranial inflammatory polyp secondary to chronic otitis in a 6-y-old female red kangaroo with right auricular discharge, loss of balance, and head tilt. Autopsy highlighted a pale-yellow, firm, intracranial polypoid growth that extended from the right tympanic cavity through the internal acoustic meatus and intracranially, with compression of the right cerebellopontine angle. Anaerobic bacterial culture yielded Bacteroides pyogenes from fresh brain and

Case report: Near-complete cortical hearing loss caused by sequential development of bilateral putaminal hemorrhage.

Intracerebral hemorrhage with sudden hearing loss as the initial symptom is rare. A right-handed man with a history of right putaminal hemorrhage developed near-complete hearing loss and right hemiplegia and was taken to our hospital by ambulance. Non-contrast computed tomography demonstrated acute intracerebral hemorrhage in the left putamen. A region of old right putaminal hemorrhage involving the right temporal stem was also shown on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery. Standard pure-tone audiometry showed right-dominant bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. More than 2 months after onset,

Voice outcomes in patients with advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer treated with chemo-radiotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with locally advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer (LHC) are often treated with chemo-radiotherapy to avoid total laryngectomy, although voice problems may occur even if not markedly manifest. We sought to evaluate the impact of chemoradiation on voice and quality of life. METHODS: We studied 21 patients with locally advanced LHC with tumour control at least two years after chemo-radiotherapy. None manifested clinical symptoms related to the treatment and maintained an activity considered as within normal limits. All patients had a voice handicap index (VHI) of less
