A total of 103 blood samples collected from wild small mammals captured in the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve on the south of Moscow region were studied to determine the bartonellae prevalence. OBJECTIVE: To assess the use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for identifying subchondral bone damage in the distal limbs of horses.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
ANIMALS: 11 horses.
PROCEDURE: Medical records of horses with lameness and subsequent evidence of subchondral bone damage as determined by MR imaging were reviewed. Severity and duration of lameness, results of diagnostic local anesthesia and diagnostic testing, surgical and necropsy findings, and treatment were recorded. Outcome was determined by follow-up information obtained from the owner or referring veterinarian.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The exotic and emerging viral encephalitides are caused by animal or human viruses and characterised by sudden unexpected outbreaks of neurological disease, usually in tropical and sub-tropical regions, but sometimes spreading to temperate areas. Although a wide range of viruses come within this label, as this review highlights, there are common research questions as to the origin and spread of the viruses, the contribution of viral and host factors to the clinical presentations and outcome, and the possibilities for treatment and vaccination.

It is now well recognized that the hypothalamus is an important site of neuropathology in Parkinson's disease (PD). Lewy bodies, a marker of nerve cell degeneration and a pathological hallmark of PD, have been observed frequently in the hypothalamus of PD patients by Lewy (1923) and other investigators and confirmed by more recent systematic studies by Langston & Forno (1978). Both Lewy and Langston & Forno found a predilection of Lewy body formation in specific hypothalamic nuclei with the tuberomammillary, lateral, and posterior areas containing by far the highest average counts per nucleus.

A study was carried out in a rural community of the state of Guerrero in order to find ways to control human taeniasis/cysticercosis (Taenia solium). At the beginning of the study the frequency of porcine cysticercosis was established to be around 6.6%. Fecal examination in the human population showed that of 760 persons, 24 were carriers of Taenia sp (3%). In many Asian and African countries, hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been identified as a major causative agent of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In these endemic areas, HBV infection also occurs early in life.
