[Helminths of carnivores relevant to veterinary practice].

Especially in an urban environment man and carnivores live closely together, whereby one has to pay attention not only to animal parasites, but also to human pathogenic connections regarding these parasites. Because of the infection risk the animal owner has to be competently informed by his veterinarian. While some cestodes make great demands on hygiene, with others the cycle can be interrupted by consequent diet restrictions. Of all nematodes the stomach worm of the cat is of greater importance as it is easily overlooked because of its small size, is difficult to diagnose and is occurring in

Treatment of intestinal parasites in Australian aboriginal children.

Five to nine-year-old Aboriginal children on Mitchell River Community maintained a satisfactory growth rate in the presence of multiple infections with intestinal parasites. Intensive treatment was successful in eliminating Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, and Strongyloides stercoralis infections, but reinfection with G. lamblia was rapid. Treatment failed to produce any growth spurt in the group. This may have been due to the rapidity of reinfection, but raises the question of whether intestinal parasites contribute significantly to growth retardation or whether growth retarded childre

Efficacy evaluation of a new oral chewable tablet containing fluralaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel (BRAVECTO® TriUNO) against hookworm and Toxascaris leonina infections in a non-terminal study design in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Broad-spectrum combination products with efficacy against endo- and ectoparasites offer the potential to optimize owner adherence to expert recommendations for canine antiparasitic treatments. In the development program for a chewable tablet containing fluralaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel, a non-terminal study design was implemented to determine anthelminthic efficacy. Four laboratory studies assessed the efficacy of this investigational veterinary product (IVP) against adult hookworms and adult Toxascaris leonina. METHODS: In four single-site, non-terminal dose confirmation studi

Alternate-Day Fasting Exacerbates Lung Inflammatory Disease Compared to High-Sucrose Diet in Experimental Schistosomiasis Mansoni.

Heterogeneous nutrient distribution, metabolic demand and immune responses can influence extrahepatic manifestations of Schistosoma mansoni infection. This study evaluated the effects of alternate-day fasting (ADF), high-sucrose diet (HSD) and praziquantel (PZQ) treatment on feeding motivation, anxiety-like behaviour and lung pathology in infected BALB/c mice. Infected animals received a standard diet (INF), or PZQ (300 mg/kg for 3 days), ADF, ADF + PZQ, HSD or HSD + PZQ. After 15 weeks of infection, behavioural parameters, parasite egg load, inflammatory infiltrate, macrophage accumulation an

Efficacy of two triclabendazole regimens for treating human chronic fasciolosis and a controlled efficacy trial in sheep using human-isolate metacercariae in Cajamarca, Peru.

Fasciolosis, caused by Fasciola hepatica is a parasitic disease highly prevalent in livestock and humans in the Cajamarca region of Peru. Control of this parasite primarily relies on the use of Triclabendazole (TCBZ). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of two TCBZ regimens in human subjects through a therapeutic efficacy test, followed by a controlled efficacy trial in sheep using metacercariae obtained from human cases that failed treatment. For the therapeutic efficacy test, twenty-six patients positive for F. hepatica eggs, diagnosed by rapid sedimentation and Kato-Katz techniques we

Fascioliasis presenting as non-resolving liver abscess: Case series from eastern India.

Fascioliasis is a foodborne trematode infection caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. It is caused by ingestion of undercooked aquatic vegetation containing infective stage metacercariae. Symptoms in the acute stage include fever, abdominal pain and eosinophilia and in the chronic stage symptoms of biliary obstruction or cholangitis. Very few fascioliasis cases have been reported from India. In the last 1 year, we diagnosed six cases of fascioliasis who presented with acute stage symptoms. They were diagnosed by characteristic dietary history, liver abscess on imaging and eggs of

Bilateral lung infiltration secondary to ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hydatid cyst rupture is a rare but serious complication of Echinococcus granulosus infection, often presenting with acute respiratory distress and mimicking pneumonia or eosinophilic lung disease. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are essential to prevent complications. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old Persian woman presented with sudden-onset dyspnea, productive cough, and high-grade fever. Imaging revealed a multilayered cyst in the left lung with bilateral infiltrations. Serologic testing confirmed Echinococcus granulosus infection. The patient was treated wi

Mathematical modeling of control strategies for the elimination of soil-transmitted helminthiases in Thailand.

Soil-transmitted helminthiases, caused by soil-transmitted helminths (commonly known as intestinal worms), are considered to be neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). In Thailand, school-age children (SAC) who live in remote areas are at risk of STH. A school-based combined intervention involving test and treat (TnT) and mass drug administration (MDA) programs has been implemented as part of the national STH control program since 2002, with a target to eliminate STH in SAC by 2026. To help achieve this target, we developed an STH transmission dynamic model, calibrated it using STH infection preva

Prevalence, intensity and risk factors of soil-transmitted helminthiasis after five effective rounds of preventive chemotherapy across three implementation units in Ondo State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Routine epidemiological data are essential for monitoring the effectiveness of preventive chemotherapy (PC), optimizing resource allocation, and addressing the evolving needs in the elimination of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH). This study assesses the prevalence, intensity, and associated risk factors of STH following five rounds of albendazole-based PC in three implementation units (IUs) in Ondo State, Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: Fresh stool samples were collected from 2,093 children aged 5-14 years across 45 systematically selected schools in three IUs: Ese-Odo, Irele, and Ile-

Efficacy of a novel chewable tablet (Credelio Quattro™) containing lotilaner, moxidectin, praziquantel, and pyrantel for the treatment and control of hookworm infections in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Hookworms, specifically Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala, have a clinical impact on the health of dogs, with A. caninum posing a zoonotic risk worldwide. The studies presented here were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a novel, oral chewable tablet (Credelio Quattro) containing lotilaner, moxidectin, praziquantel, and pyrantel (as pamoate salt) against fourth-stage larvae (L4), immature adult, and adult A. caninum, as well as adult U. stenocephala, infections in dogs. METHODS: Nine negatively controlled, masked, randomized laboratory studies evaluated the effica

Challenges in applying W.A.A.V.P. criteria to diagnosing triclabendazole resistance in Fasciola hepatica, an example from the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia.

Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) is a zoonotic parasite of global concern. In Australia, it is the 13th most important cause of economic loss in the sheep meat industry alone. Resistance to the frontline drug, triclabendazole (TCBZ), was first recorded in Australia in 1995 and has since emerged globally. In 2023, producers from the New South Wales (NSW) Southern Tablelands raised concerns over a reported 230% increase in liver fluke, which they suspected was due to drug resistance. To confirm or deny these suspicions, we co-designed a diagnostic field investigation aligned with guidelines from
