Multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD) is a rare disorder characterized by fever, polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, and generalized lymphadenopathy. The following are our results of a retrospective analysis of 214 patients, operated on meningiomas, in order to investigate radiological criteria of malignancy. Among these cases there were 31 patients with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of malignant subtypes. As uncertain signs of malignancy of ensuing radiological features are an irregular enhancement of contrast-media and the size of cerebral edema. Based upon CT and MR images we have developed a standardised, computerised evaluation method which enables us to study in detail the internal architecture of meningiomas.

Biopsy specimens for histopathological study were taken from 15 parasitologically proven cases with different clinical forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) including two patients with disseminated CL in the form of subcutaneous nodules and satellite papules. The abdominal sonograms of 64 leukemic children were reviewed and correlated with clinical, hematological, and, when available, autopsy findings. Three cases of peculiar and very severe ductal papillomatosis of the breast are reported. This ductal papillomatosis was unusual, both in its histological architecture and in occurring in juveniles, viz. girls aged 11, 14, and 17 years. In two of the patients breast cancer was diagnosed 27 and 11 years later. In one of them the ductal papillomatosis must be presumed to have been precancerosis, while in the other patient there was possibly from the outset an unusually papilliferous, intraductal carcinoma of low malignancy.

Vascular anatomy of the eustachian tube has received little attention in the world's medical literature. Forty guinea pigs were perfused with Berlin Blue as a contrast medium and the eustachian tube microvascular architecture visualized through surface preparations. A diffuse, dense two-layered capillary network was found which followed the distribution of mucous glands. Five animals suffering from suppurative otitis media showed marked capillary congestion with increased vessel to tissue density. Relationships to gross arterial and venous supply as found in the human are discussed.

Loss of architecture within the femoral neck due to ageing follows a distinct pattern. This may serve as an index of physiologic ageing of bone. In pathologic osteoporosis (e.g. Cushing's disease, thyreotoxicosis and idiopathic osteoporosis) this systematic reduction of trabecular structure cannot be seen in the femoral neck although the vertebral bodies show all the signs of severe osteoporosis. Radiographic comparison between the proximal end of femur and the spine may, therefore, serve as a useful means of differentiation between pathologic and age-osteoporosis.

Artificial cells have emerged as powerful platforms for reconstructing and understanding the structural and functional principles of living cells. This review provides an overview of recent advances in engineering artificial cytoskeletons using biological and artificial molecular components and discusses how these fibrous architectures enable structural organization and functional regulation of artificial cells. In addition, current challenges and future perspectives toward increasingly life-like artificial cells are highlighted.
