BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based interventions show promise for trauma-related conditions, yet controlled trials examining their efficacy for dissociative symptoms remain scarce. This feasibility study evaluated whether Mindfulness-Based Training (MBT), when added to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), reduces dissociative symptoms more effectively than CBT combined with guided physical exercise.
METHODS: A controlled pseudo-randomized design was employed with 104 participants assigned to either MBT plus CBT (intervention) or CBT plus physical exercise (active control). Dissociative symptoms wer

Reports of sex and age differences in the presentation of borderline symptoms have been limited to the Western literature and have not systematically compared adolescents with emerging and older adults with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study aimed to examine the impact of age and sex on the expression of borderline symptoms in adolescents, young adults, and older adults with BPD. A sample of 493 Iranian individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of BPD was segregated into 2 age groups: 134 young people aged 12-25 (mean = 17.60), and 142 adults aged 26 and older (mean = 31.69). Young

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune-mediated systemic disorder triggered by the ingestion of gluten. While it typically presents with gastrointestinal symptoms, it is also associated with various neuropsychiatric manifestations, including depression, migraine, developmental disorders, and epilepsy. In Asia, particularly in Japan, CD remains underdiagnosed, potentially delaying appropriate diagnosis and treatment for early intervention.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 16-year-old girl who presented with long-standing behavioral issues, including repeated theft and rule

People with mosaicism for trisomy 21 have been shown to exhibit the many of same phenotypic traits present in people with non-mosaic Down syndrome, but with varying symptom severity. However, the behavioral phenotype of people with mosaic Down syndrome (mDS) has not been well characterized. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of self-report and caregiver-report symptoms of depression and anxiety among a sample of 62 participants with mDS aged 12 - 46, and assess their association with the percentage of trisomy 21 in blood and/or buccal mucosa cells. The results showed that 53% of the pa

Bruxism has been defined in recent years and analyzed in detail as the repetitive activity of the muscles of the masticatory system. Both adults and children experience two different forms of bruxism: daytime and nighttime bruxism. According to the WHO, bruxism affects 5% to 50% of the world's pediatric population. The symptoms of this disease include tooth wear and fractures, temporomandibular disorders, headaches, behavioral and sleep disorders, and parafunctional habits such as nail biting. According to scientists, psychosocial factors are the most likely factors causing bruxism in children

INTRODUCTION: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a prevalent, but frequently overlooked and/or under diagnosed disorder of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). Functional dyspepsia frequently co-exists with other DGBIs, and persistent symptoms have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. A variety of therapies (e.g. diet, probiotics, antibiotics, acid suppressants, neuromodulators, prokinetics) are employed to treat the multiple symptoms of FD, although none are uniformly effective.
AREAS COVERED: This review covers currently available therapies for the treatment of FD in addition to novel and

BACKGROUND: An extremely heterogeneous neuropsychological phenotype has been reported in Sotos Syndrome (SoS), including socio-communicative and behavioral difficulties referred to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Nonetheless, to date, only few data are available on the topic.
AIM: To investigate ASD symptoms within a sample of children with SoS in comparison to a matched control group of individuals with idiopathic ASD.
METHODS: A convenience sample of SoS (n = 33, age: 9.8 ± 4.1) and ASD (n = 33, age: 9.9 ± 4.1), was included. Autistic symptoms' assessment was performed through the administ

The association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is widely reported, with support for the role of epilepsy, yet the mechanisms underlying the association across development are unclear. The Tuberous Sclerosis 2000 Study is a prospective longitudinal study of TSC. In Phase 1 of the study, baseline measures of epilepsy, cortical tuber load, and mutation were obtained with 125 children ages 0-16 years. In Phase 2, at an average of 8 years later, ADHD symptoms were measured for 81 of the participants. Structural equation modeling revealed

Antipsychotic drugs (APs) aim to treat schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and behavioral symptoms. In child psychiatry, despite limited evidence regarding their efficacy and safety, APs are increasingly subject to off-label use. Studies investigating addictology-related symptoms in young people being scarce, we aimed to characterize the different patterns of AP misuse and withdrawal in children and adolescents relying on the WHO pharmacovigilance database (VigiBase®, Uppsala Monitoring Centre, Sweden). Using the standardized MedDRA Query 'drug abuse, dependence and withdrawal', disproportionality f…

Background: Postconcussion syndrome (PCS) or persistent symptoms of concussion refers to a constellation of symptoms that persist for weeks and months after a concussion. To better capture the heterogeneity of the symptoms of patients with PCS, we aimed to separate patients into clinical subtypes based on brain connectivity changes. Methods: Subject-specific structural and functional connectomes were created based on diffusion weighted and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging, respectively. Following an informed dimensionality reduction, a Gaussian mixture model was used on pati

Various psychiatric disorders are treated with mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), although the efficacy of MBIs in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) is unclear. In this meta-analysis, we investigated the efficacy of MBIs on SAD symptoms. Systematic searches were performed in various databases, and 11 eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 5 single-arm trials were identified. The between-groups analysis of the 11 RCTs showed that Hedges' g = 0.00, while the within-group analysis showed a large pre-post effect size (g = 1.20).MBIs were superior to the no-treatment compar

This study examines relationships among different aspects of therapeutic alliance with treatment outcome, adherence and attrition in internet delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) for panic disorder. We examined alliance-outcome relationships in ICBT (N = 74) using a newly developed self-report alliance measure that disentangles alliance with program content (Internet Patient's Experience of Attunement and Responsiveness with the program; I-PEARp) and with the therapist (I-PEARt). We compared ICBT outcomes of patient rated and therapist-rated alliance with conventional alliance scales

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between somatic symptom disorder (SSD) and sleep disorders, following three research questions: (1) How are these disorders correlated? (2) What are the comorbidities reported in these patients? and (3) What are the most effective pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for both conditions? PubMed, Scopus, OVID, Medline, and ProQuest databases were searched for relevant articles published between 1957-2020. Search terms included "somatic symptoms disorder", "sleep disorders", "insomnia", "somatoform", "somatization", "therapeutic", "p

(1) Background: The efficacy of the Unified Protocol (UP), a transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy, with trauma-focused exposure has not been sufficiently demonstrated for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with multiple comorbidities. This study examined the effects of UP treatment with trauma-focused exposure on symptoms of PTSD and comorbidities in a client who was hesitant about exposure. (2) Methods: The client, who had comorbid dysthymia, social anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and bulimia nervosa, participated in the UP for 20 sessions over 6 months. The principal diagnosis and

This study examined whether components of sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) could moderate the effect of perceived stress on depressive symptoms and its neural substrates. In this study, 244 participants (181females) reported on their SPS, perceived stress, and experienced depressive symptoms, and subsequently underwent a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) to explore the neural basis of their SPS characteristics. Behavioral results showed that, compared with individuals low in EOE (i.e., ease of excitation, a sub-dimension of SPS), those high in EOE were more like

Research over the last 4 decades has revealed a great deal of information about psychiatric and functional causes, consequences, and comorbidity of vestibular syndromes. Primary care clinicians, neurologists, and otologists who are willing to set aside the 20th century notion of "psychogenic dizziness" and incorporate 21st century concepts about 5 behavioral entities into their practices will be rewarded for their efforts with a marked improvement in diagnostic acumen and therapeutic effectiveness. Panic attacks may cause or contribute to acute or episodic vestibular symptoms. Generalized anxi

While evidence-based interventions can help the substantial number of veterans diagnosed with comorbid PTSD and depression, an emerging literature has identified sleep disturbances as predictors of treatment nonresponse. More specifically, predicting effects of residual insomnia and nightmares on postintervention PTSD and depressive symptoms among veterans with comorbid PTSD and depression has remained unclear. The present study used data from a clinical trial of Behavioral Activation and Therapeutic Exposure (BA-TE), a combined approach to address comorbid PTSD and depression, administered to

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common and debilitating inflammatory dermatological disorder and is marked by itch and inflamed skin. Scratching, sleep loss, and avoidance of situations associated with more AD symptoms are central hypothesized mechanisms that perpetuate the disorder and cause reduced quality of life. We developed an exposure-based cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) that entailed mindfulness practice as a means to increase tolerance for aversive experiences during exposure. The aim of the present study was to test the treatment's acceptability and preliminary efficacy in adults w

The present study examines the potential of sequencing a neurocognitive intervention with behavioral parent training (BPT) to improve executive functions (EFs), psychiatric symptoms, and multiple indices of functional impairment in school-age children aged 7 to 11 years who have been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Specifically, in a randomized controlled trial design, 85 children were assigned to either Cogmed Working Memory Training (CWMT) followed by an empirically supported, manualized BPT intervention, or to a placebo version of CWMT followed by the same BP
