Due to high vaccination coverage of the dog population in Western and Middle Europe, veterinarians are usually not familiar with clinical signs and treatment of Infectious Canine Hepatitis (ICH). This case report describes a 4-month-old female mixed breed dog that was imported from Bulgaria. According to the history, the puppy was presented with lethargy, pyrexia, icterus and melaena. On clinical examination, the dog additionally exhibited a painful abdomen and bleeding tendency at the venous puncture sites. Blood analysis revealed anaemia, left shift without leucocytosis, increased liver enzy

PURPOSE: We investigated factors contributing to coagulopathy in patients with acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) and coagulopathy's influence on patient outcomes.
METHODS: We grouped 420 patients who underwent ATAAD repair-none under anticoagulation therapy or with liver disease-by the prothrombin time-international normalized ratio (PT-INR) at admission: < 1.2 (no coagulopathy, n = 371), 1.2-1.49 (mild coagulopathy, n = 33), or ≥ 1.5 (severe coagulopathy, n = 16). We then compared the clinical presentation, dissection morphology, and outcomes among the groups. We assessed the

Oxidative stress is a potential mechanism involved in the pathogenesis of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). Although a tendency for hypercoagulability has been reported in IDA, its underlying mechanism is yet to be elucidated. This study investigated the probable relationship between oxidative stress and hypercoagulability in children with IDA. This study included 57 children diagnosed with IDA (IDA group) between October 2016 and October 2017 in addition to 48 healthy children (control group). The maximum clot firmness (MCF) index, and clot formation time (CFT) index, which are indicators of hyp

COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory system and may lead to severe systemic complications, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multiple organ failure, cytokine storm, and thromboembolic events. Depending on the immune status of the affected individual early disease control can be reached by a robust type-I-interferon (type-I-IFN) response restricting viral replication. If type-I-IFN upregulation is impaired, patients develop severe COVID-19 that involves profound alveolitis, endothelitis, complement activation, recruitment of immune cells, as well as immunothrombosis. In

Is snake venom activity influenced by size? This is a long-standing question that can have important consequences for the treatment of snake envenomation. Ontogenetic shifts in venom composition are a well-documented characteristic of numerous snake species. Although snake venoms can cause a range of pathophysiological disturbances, establishing the coagulotoxic profiles related to such shifts is a justified approach because coagulotoxicity can be deadly, and its neutralisation is a challenge for current antivenom therapy. Thus, we aimed to assess the coagulotoxicity patterns on plasma and fib

BACKGROUND: Bleeding disorders are uncommon but may pose significant bleeding complications during pregnancy, labour and following delivery for both the woman and the foetus. While many bleeding disorders in women tend to improve in pregnancy, thus decreasing the haemorrhagic risk to the mother at the time of delivery, some do not correct or return quite quickly to their pre-pregnancy levels in the postpartum period. Therefore, specific measures to prevent maternal bleeding and foetal complications during childbirth, are required. The safest method of delivery to reduce morbidity and mortality

BACKGROUND: Coagulation abnormalities are not infrequent in sepsis. It is unclear if abnormalities in thromboelastogram (TEG) are associated with mortality in patients with severe sepsis without overt bleeding.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, patients were categorised as those with normal coagulation, hypercoagulable or hypercoagulable state based on admission TEG parameters (R time, K time, Maximum amplitude (MA), α angle). Their association with mortality was explored using Fisher's exact and Mann-Whitney U test as appropriate.
RESULTS: The study cohort (n = 87; 49 male)

Fibrinogen is a hexameric plasmatic glycoprotein composed of pairs of three chains (Aα, Bβ, and γ), which play an essential role in hemostasis. Conversion of fibrinogen to insoluble polymer fibrin gives structural stability, strength, and adhesive surfaces for growing blood clots. Equally important, the exposure of its non-substrate thrombin-binding sites after fibrin clot formation promotes antithrombotic properties. Fibrinogen and fibrin have a major role in multiple biological processes in addition to hemostasis and thrombosis, i.e., fibrinolysis (during which the fibrin clot is broken down

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of the activated protein C resistance (APCr) based on the endogenous thrombin potential (ETP) is recommended during the development of steroid contraceptives. Results are usually expressed as "normalized APC sensitivity ratio" (nAPCsr) using a reference plasma that should achieve an ETP ratio of 0.1 in presence of exogenous APC. Because of the interassay variability, achieving exactly an ETP ratio of 0.1 in each run is almost impossible, which significantly affects the theoretical 0-10 scale of nAPCsr.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the nAPCsr to the nAPCsr10 , a newly prop

BACKGROUND: Bleeding disorders (BD) are under-recognized in adolescents with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB).
OBJECTIVES: The lack of clinical guidelines and variable symptomatic management of HMB created the imperative to standardize HMB care to identify and manage BD in adolescents.
METHODS: We convened an international working group (WG), utilized the results of a literature review to define knowledge gaps in HMB care, and used the collective clinical experience of the WG to develop care considerations for adolescents with BD and HMB. We then solicited input on the appropriateness of HMB c

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are web-like extrusions of genetic material, which are released upon neutrophil activation. NETs consist of a chromatin substructure, onto which a vast array of proteins with various properties is dispersed. NETs production was initially described as an unrecognized defense mechanism of neutrophils, due to their ability to entrap and possibly eliminate a wide range of pathogens. Nevertheless, growing evidence suggests that NETs are implicated in a multitude of pathophysiological conditions, such as autoimmunity, cancer, diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer's di

Diabetes mellitus is an important risk factor for a first cardiovascular event and for worse outcomes after a cardiovascular event has occurred. This situation might be caused, at least in part, by the prothrombotic status observed in patients with diabetes. Therefore, contemporary antithrombotic strategies, including more potent agents or drug combinations, might provide greater clinical benefit in patients with diabetes than in those without diabetes. In this Consensus Statement, our Working Group explores the mechanisms of platelet and coagulation activity, the current debate on antiplatele

Clinical observations and accumulating laboratory evidence support a complex interplay between coagulation, inflammation, innate immunity and fibrinolysis in venous thromboembolism (VTE). VTE, which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and the subsequent complications of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), are significant causes of morbidity and mortality in patients. Clinical risk factors for VTE include cancer, major trauma, surgery, sepsis, inflammatory bowel disease, paralysis, prolonged periods of immobility, and aging. Abnormalities in venous blood flow or stasis

BACKGROUND: Severe traumatic injury continues to present challenges to healthcare systems around the world, and post-traumatic bleeding remains a leading cause of potentially preventable death among injured patients. Now in its fifth edition, this document aims to provide guidance on the management of major bleeding and coagulopathy following traumatic injury and encourages adaptation of the guiding principles described here to individual institutional circumstances and resources.
METHODS: The pan-European, multidisciplinary Task Force for Advanced Bleeding Care in Trauma was founded in 2004,

Patients with advanced liver disease have traditionally been considered at risk for bleeding complications. However, although bleeding in patients with cirrhosis frequently occurs due to complications of portal hypertension, research performed within the last 15 years has increasingly shown that hemostasis in patients with liver failure generally achieves a state of "rebalance", whereby compensatory systems restore a relatively neutral or even slightly pro-thrombotic state. Much recent clinical and in vitro research has, in fact, shown over-compensation, such that patients with acute and stabl
