Dorsally displaced distal radius fractures treated by fixed-angle volar plating: Grip and pronosupination strength recovery. A prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Malunion following open reduction and internal fixation of distal radius fracture threatens wrist function. Fixed-angle palmar plates provide rigid fixation that is stable over time; however, the pronator quadratus sectioning required by the anterior approach entails a risk of pronation strength loss and of distal radioulnar joint destabilization. The present study assessed recovery of grip, pronation and supination strength following such internal fixation. PATIENTS AND METHOD: A prospective study included 26 distal radial fractures with dorsal displacement, osteosynthesized us

Efficacy Comparison of Open Reduction and Robot-Aided Infra-Acetabular and Posterior Column Screws Fixation in Complex Acetabular Fractures Surgery: Union Plate Versus Reconstruction Plate.

BACKGROUND: An anatomical supra-pectineal quadrilateral surface buttress plate (Union Plate) has been designed and shown promising mechanical strength in vivo. Robot-aided technique has shown promising results in navigation of infra-acetabular and posterior column screws placement. This study sought to further examine whether the emerging anatomical plate provided advantages over the reconstruction plate in robot-aided complex acetabular fracture surgery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis comparing two internal fixation methods was conducted between September 2023 and January 2025. Spe

Does the intermetatarsal angle play a role in first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis rate and time to union?

BACKGROUND: A first metatarsophalangeal joint (1st MTPJ) arthrodesis is a reliable procedure for treating osteoarthritis with severe hallux valgus deformities. However, the effect of preoperative first-second intermetatarsal (IM) angle deformity on union rates and time to union remains unclear. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on patients that underwent a 1st MTPJ arthrodesis for correction of osteoarthritis and hallux valgus deformity from 2010 to 2020 utilizing a dorsal locking plate and interfragmentary lag screw fixation technique. All procedures were performed at a single re

Adjunctive Dorsal Spanning Plate Fixation in the Stabilization of Perilunate Dislocations.

PURPOSE: To compare the biomechanical properties of adjunctive dorsal spanning plate (DSP) fixation with traditional K-wire fixation of perilunate dislocations in a cadaveric model. METHODS: Fourteen fresh-frozen cadaveric wrists underwent simulated perilunate injury. The specimens were randomly allocated to either K-wire fixation versus K-wire and DSP fixation. Scapholunate (SL) ligament repair was performed in all specimens. The constructs were tested using a robot cyclically and to failure. Fluoroscopic images were obtained of the specimens prior to simulated injury, after fixation, after

Finite element analyses of three minimally invasive fixation techniques for treating Sanders type II intra-articular calcaneal fractures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Calcaneal Sanders type II or III fractures are highly disabling with significant burden. Surgical treatment modalities include open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) techniques and a variety of minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approaches. ORIF techniques are associated with complications and traditional MIS techniques need extensive intraoperative fluoroscopic procedures. The present study aims to investigate the effects of three different minimally invasive internal fixation (MIIF) techniques used to treat Sanders type II intra-articular calcaneal fractures usi

Outcomes of embedded rafting k-wire technique for intermediate articular fragment fixation in comminuted olecranon fractures.

BACKGROUND: Severely comminuted olecranon fractures are challenging injuries. Commonly used tension band wiring exerts excessive compressive forces causing olecranon shortening and joint incongruity. This study aimed to introduce the embedded rafting k-wire technique with the bridging technique for intermediate articular fragment fixation in comminuted olecranon fractures and evaluate its clinical and radiological outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 34 patients with comminuted olecranon fractures were treated with rafting k-wire fixation combined with a locking plate. Time to union, t

Three-screw versus two-screw fixation of distal fragment in fifth metacarpal neck fractures stabilized with locking plate.

Fifth metacarpal neck fracture commonly requires open reduction and internal fixation. Locking plate was widely adopted in the treatment of fifth metacarpal neck fracture as first-line choice for fixation. Patients with fifth metacarpal neck fracture receiving locking plate fixation were included for analysis. Features of internal fixation including number of distal and proximal locking screws, diameter of the screws and usage of lag screws were recorded. Clinical and radiographic outcomes included final volar angulation, grip strength, Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire (MHQ) and range of m

Concomitant open reduction of a nasal bone fracture combined with a zygomatic fracture through a subciliary incision.

Nasal bone fracture is the most common of the fractures of the facial skeleton. For centuries, these injuries have been managed with closed reduction, but because of low surgeon satisfaction rates and high revision rates, open reduction is advocated in cases involving severe deviation of the nasal dorsum associated with septal fractures. There are many surgical approaches that can be used to expose the nasal bones, but we present a case where the subciliary incision was used to reduce and fixate the fracture in a patient with combined zygomatic fractures. Owing to the abundance of other concom

Lateral subtalar dislocation associated with bimalleolar fracture: case report and literature review.

Subtalar dislocation is an uncommon injury that affects the talocalcaneal and talonavicular joints, with the tibiotalar and calcaneocuboid joints remaining intact. The 4 types of subtalar dislocation are medial, lateral, anterior, and posterior, although the latter 2 are rare. These injuries-especially lateral dislocation-occur as a result of high-energy trauma. Medial dislocation is the most common type, and lateral dislocation is associated with osteochondral fractures of the talus and calcaneus, as well as with open injuries; hence, its worse prognosis. We report the case of a 62-year-old w

Fibular lengthening for malunited ankle fractures.

BACKGROUND: Malunited ankle fractures are uncommon. They produce symptoms of persistent pain, joint effusion, limitation of dorsiflexion and eventually lead to ankle arthritis. We feel that correction of the ankle alignment can improve the final outcome and present our results. MATERIALS AND METHOD: From May 2004 to April 2006, seven patients with a malunited fibular fracture aged 25 to 62 years (male:female ratio, 5:2) were treated in our institute. All patients were referred for persistent pain. The delay between injury and the operative intervention was 3 to 16 months. All patients were as

[Personal modification of the Codubix prosthesis in craniofacial plastic surgery].

Typical "Codubix" prosthesis usually applied to cover cranial defect was used in craniofacial reconstruction. In this case the defect resulted from total removal of cranial basis neoplasm infiltrating orbital roof and surrounding structures. The cranial defect included right frontal bone--superciliary arch, orbital roof and margin; zygomatic bone frontal part junction and the lesser and greater wings of the sphenoid. Cranial reconstruction in this spatially differentiated area is technically difficult. The authors discuss the way of standard prosthesis modification in order to apply it in cran
