Recent studies indicate that the proto-oncogene Bax, and other related proteins (eg Bcl-2) may play a major role in determining whether cells will undergo apoptosis under conditions which promote cell death. Increased expression of Bax has been found to promote apoptosis, while over-expression of Bcl-2 can inhibit apoptosis. To investigate the role of Bax in nerve cell death in the rat brain we examined the level of Bax expression in cells undergoing apoptosis, using a hypoxic-ischemic stroke model. We found that Bax was expressed at high levels in the nuclei of neurons in the hippocampus, cor

Brains affected by the fronto-temporal type of Pick's disease were classified into two subgroups according to whether Pick bodies (PBs) were detectable in cerebral cortex (PB-positive group, six cases) or not (PB-negative group, eight cases), and examined neuropathologically. Controls included seven patients with non-degenerative diseases. The neuronal population in the locus coeruleus (LC) was estimated quantitatively in preparations from the middle part of the LC. The data were analyzed statistically by the Mann-Whitney U-test. Histological and ultrastructural studies were also carried out.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Increased mortality in the acute phase after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is well established, and there is good evidence suggesting increased long-term mortality as well. Although the reasons for increased acute phase mortality are mostly intuitive, factors associated with long-term mortality are not well understood. The objective of this study was to compare survival and causes of deaths among patients with head injuries and matched population controls.
METHODS: Ten-year survival and causes of deaths were compared between a cohort of consecutive patients with trau

BACKGROUND: Smallness for gestational age and reduced head circumference at birth are consistently associated with later neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), but it is unclear whether similar associations are present at foetal biometry in mid-gestation.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate associations between second-trimester foetal biometric measurements and later NDD.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using data from routine second-trimester ultrasound scans (gestational weeks 18-21) in Denmark. We included all singleton euploid live births from 2008 to 2015. Foetal biometrics in

Influenza-associated encephalopathy (IAE) in children is a rare but severe complication associated with high morbidity and mortality. Timely identification of high-risk cases remains challenging due to variable clinical presentations and limited pediatric-specific evidence. This retrospective cohort study included 198 children diagnosed with IAE between 2015 and 2022 in a pediatric intensive care unit. Patients were categorized by in-hospital prognosis, defined as either poor (including death, coma, or neurological sequelae at discharge) or favorable outcome. Clinical and laboratory parameters

There are various radiopharmaceuticals and hybrid imaging techniques for evaluating pediatric patients in the acute care setting. The focus of this article is on common nuclear medicine applications in pediatric acute care. Brain scintigraphy is an important ancillary test for evaluation of brain death/death by neurologic criteria when the clinical examination or apnea test cannot be safely or completely performed. Ventilation-perfusion scintigraphy is considered as a safe and useful test for suspected pulmonary embolism in hemodynamically stable children, especially when the chest radiograph …

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an emerging alternative to whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) for treating multiple brain metastases (BM), reducing toxicity, and improving tumor control. The CYBER-SPACE trial compared SRS based on either SPACE or MPRAGE MRI sequence for avoiding or delaying WBRT in patients with 1-10 BM.
METHODS: Patients with 1-10 untreated BM were randomized 1:1 to receive SRS of all lesions based on either SPACE or MPRAGE MRI sequences. If subsequently new BM occurred, SRS was repeated. WBRT was indicated upon occurrence of >10 new BM, leptomeningeal disease, o

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus fumigatus is a common pathogen that causes intracranial aspergillosis. A. fumigatus intracranial infection mainly occurs in the brain parenchyma. Head CT or MRI examination showed aspergillous abscess, which is extremely rare to caused meningitis alone. We report a case of aspergillosis meningitis with short-term death. METHOD: We utilized the DNBSEQ™ sequencing platform, which employs DNA nanoballs (DNBs) technology. Briefly, DNBs are arrayed on a patterned flow cell, where DNA polymerase catalyzes the incorporation of fluorescently labeled nucleotides during sequencin

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative pathologic entity characterized by the abnormal presence of tau and macromolecular Aβ deposition that leads to the degeneration or death of neurons. In addition to that, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) has a multifaceted role in the process of AD development, where it can be used as both a marker and a target. G6PD activity is dysregulated due to its contribution to oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and neuronal death. In this context, the current review presents a vivid depiction of recent findings on the relationship between AD prog

BACKGROUND: Environmental pollution, including exposure to carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), poses serious health risks, particularly through oxidative stress, which may lead to neurodegenerative damage. Antioxidants, especially those found in natural products, show potential in mitigating these toxic effects. Pomegranate juice (PJ), rich in bioactive phytochemicals, has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of PJ on neurotoxicity induced by CCl4 in rats, assessing specific markers of oxidative

Cerebral ischemic stroke is a serious disease with high mortality and disability rates. However, few neuroprotective drugs have been used for ischemic stroke in the clinic. Two main reasons may be responsible for this failure: difficulty in penetrating the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and easily inactivated in the blood circulation. Ferroptosis, a lipid oxidation-related cell death, plays significant roles in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. We utilized RVG29, a peptide derived from Rabies virus glycoprotein, to obtain BBB-targeted lipid nanoparticles (T-LNPs) in order to investigate whether

TAR DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43) pathology is a key feature of over 95% of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and nearly half of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) cases. The pathogenic mechanisms of TDP-43 dysfunction are poorly understood, however, activation of cell stress pathways may contribute to pathogenesis. We, therefore, sought to identify which cell stress components are critical for driving disease onset and neurodegeneration in ALS and FTD. We studied the rNLS8 transgenic mouse model, which expresses human TDP-43 with a genetically-ablated nuclear localisation sequence within neuro

The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves multiple pathophysiological processes. Oxidative stress is a major cause of AD-associated neuronal injury. The current research was designed to examine whether a novel (-)-meptazinol-serotonin hybrid (Mep-S) with potent antioxidant activity and additional inhibitory properties for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity could attenuate oxidative neuronal damage and cognitive deficits. In human SH-SY5Y cells, Mep-S suppressed H2O2-induced apoptosis by restoring mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibiting caspase-3 activation. Meanwhile, it

Cerebral stroke remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Ischemic stroke caused by the sudden loss of blood flow in brain is the major type of cerebral stroke. In addition to necrotic cell death in the ischemic core region, neuronal apoptosis is usually observed in the ischemic penumbra. Pnn, a multi-functional protein, participates in cellular proliferation, migration, differentiation, apoptosis as well as cell-cell interaction through its abilities in regulating gene transcription and mRNA processing. Our recent studies have demonstrated that Pnn has a cell type-specific distrib

In this study, we characterize the natural course of metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD), explore intra/inter group differences, and identify biomarkers to monitor disease progression. This is a longitudinal observational study. Genotype and characteristics at disease onset were recorded. Time-to-event analyses were performed to assess time to major disease-related milestones in different subgroups. Longitudinal trajectories of nerve conduction velocities (NCV), brain MRI score, and brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) were described. We recruited 22 late-infantile, 14 early-juvenile, 5

Recent studies of cerebral hypoxia-ischemia (HI) have highlighted slowly progressive neurodegeneration whose mechanisms remain elusive, but if blocked, could considerably improve long-term neurological function. We previously established that the cytokine transforming growth factor (TGF)β1 is highly elevated following HI and that delivering an antagonist for TGFβ receptor activin-like kinase 5 (ALK5)-SB505124-three days after injury in a rat model of moderate pre-term HI significantly preserved the structural integrity of the thalamus and hippocampus as well as neurological functions associate

Cronobacter sakazakii is a food-borne pathogen carried in milk powder that can cause severe bacteremia, enterocolitis, and meningitis in newborns, which can lead to death of newborns. Preventing infection by this pathogen is significant to the health of newborns. Since infants and young children are the main target group of C. sakazakii, it is considered that maternal immunity can enhance the protection of newborns. Previous studies showed that two proteins of C. sakazakii (GroEL and OmpX) exhibited high expression levels and elicited strong immune reactions, suggesting their potential as vacc
