We report two breast-fed premature infants who developed transient symptomatic zinc deficiency with scaly erythema of cheeks and napkin area, 9-13 weeks after birth. Serum zinc concentrations were 3.6 and 4.8 mumols/l, and the lesions healed rapidly in response to oral zinc supplements. Both mothers had low breast-milk zinc levels (2.3 and 3.2 mumols/l at 21 and 15 weeks respectively). The infants were both initially misdiagnosed as having eczema and infection. The authors reviewed the accuracy of stereotaxic fine-needle aspiration cytology in prediction of the presence of cancer. Seventy-four nonpalpable breast cancers and 144 benign lesions were studied. The rate of obtaining an inadequate sample was 8.1% for cancers and 20.8% for benign lesions. This study evaluates the usefulness of routine follow-up of breast cancer patients. In all, 416 patients who were treated with curative intent for breast cancer were followed according to a fixed follow-up schedule for a minimum of 2.5 years and a maximum of 13.5 years (mean about 5 years). A case of subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus associated with breast carcinoma is presented. The patient had not been aware of her malignant disease and had consulted us after her dermatosis developed. To date only one case of subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus associated with malignancy has been described in the literature. The relationship between a dermatosis and a malignant internal disease is discussed.

Mortality rates among 838 white female breast cancer patients were examined for relationships to personal characteristics assessed at time of diagnosis. These included weight and body mass index, oral contraceptive use, and prior menstrual and reproductive events. Sex-steroid hormones are a major determinant of the risk of breast cancer. We evaluated the relationship between obesity and endogenous estrogen levels in 79 healthy, postmenopausal women. The mammographic presentations of 300 consecutive nonpalpable breast cancers were analyzed to more clearly define the spectrum of radiographic signs needed to detect cancer at such an early stage. Clustered calcifications were the primary mammographic abnormality in 42% of cases, but only 23% demonstrated the rod, curvilinear, and branching shapes that are characteristic of malignancy. Despite the well-recognized advantages of breast-feeding, a rare but life-threatening complication may occur with failure to thrive resulting in severe malnourishment or hypernatremic dehydration. Early detection of breast cancer by mammography depends on the production of excellent images and competent interpretation. Some of the more important pitfalls encountered with and controversies about mammography are presented in this article. In many cases, the radiologist is unable to declare whether the mammogram is unequivocally normal or abnormal and instead should aid the clinician in formulating rational management options for the woman. Practical options for some of these very complicated problems are proposed.

Thrombospondin, beta-thromboglobulin and platelet factor 4 were measured by radioimmunoassay in fluids from 50 human breast cysts. beta-Thromboglobulin concentrations were less than 4-330 ng/ml (median 13.5 ng/ml), while normal plasma contained 14-80 ng/ml. Fifty woman patients with adenoma or fibroadenoma, cystic, simple or complex dysplasias were treated with tamoxifen in daily doses of 20 mg.
