In Hungary, 4388 sheep in six flocks were surveyed in June-August of 1992-1995 to gather basic data on wound myiasis, its incidence, the predominant fly species involved and the clinical manifestations of infestation. The pathogenesis and economic significance of wound myiasis, as well as the interrelation of breed and sex with infestation levels, were evaluated. Active wound myiasis was recorded in all flocks, in 17.6% (774/4388) of the inspected sheep. A survey of the histology of 2,024 small intestinal suction and forceps biopsies in 400 dogs, consisting of 17 clinically healthy control dogs and 383 dogs with chronic diarrhea is presented. Three and a half percent of the suction biopsies and 22.6 percent of the forceps biopsies were unsuitable for examination, making a diagnosis impossible in 9 dogs, and in 0.4 percent antral mucosa was present. A female pair of conjoined twins of the Lhasa Apso canine breed was subjected to tomographic and anatomical examinations. The twins had only one head and neck. The two ribcages were joined, extending to the umbilicus, with duplicated structures thereafter. They had three thoracic limbs and two pelvic girdles with four limbs, as well as a number of abnormalities in their internal organs. The data obtained were compared with the rare canine cases reported so far and with human cases.

A 13 mo old spayed female mixed-breed dog presented in a nonambulatory state that was attributed to severe myoclonus secondary to distemper. The authors hypothesized that mitigating the myoclonus would help the dog become ambulatory and expedite convalescence. They injected the severely affected muscles with botulinum toxin on two separate occasions over a period of 18 days. Those injections reduced the myoclonus, helping the dog become ambulatory and attaining a comfortable, functional state.

A six-year old mixed-breed dog presented with severe trauma to the oral mucosa suggestive of chemical burn. Sixteen Harmonia axyridis (Coccinellidae) were removed from the oral cavity, which revealed trauma consistent with chemical burn. The beetles had become embedded in mucosa covering the hard palate and required manual removal. A diagnosis of beetle induced chemical burn was warranted and consistent with the nature of the chemical constituents of H. axyridis hemolymph.

A 12-year-old intact female mixed breed dog was presented for chronic, intermittent vomiting and diarrhoea. On endoscopic examination a protruding mass arising from the mucosal surface of the pyloric region was detected. Cytological and histological examination revealed an accumulation of pleomorphic round/oval phagocytic cells suggesting histiocytic origin. This was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. No extra-gastric involvement was detected on clinical examination or at necropsy. This is the first report of primary gastric histiocytic sarcoma in a dog.

Combined immunodeficiency syndrome is an inherited disorder of the Arabian breed of horses. Affected foals usually die of infectious disease within the first few months of life, and the respiratory tract is the commonest site of infection. This report describes the clinical and pathological features of a case which showed signs of alimentary and respiratory infections. Intestinal infection by coronavirus (not previously recorded in cases of the syndrome) and cryptosporidia was identified. Histopathological evidence also suggested the presence of an adenovirus infection.

Hereditary nephropathies in dogs represent multiple complex clinicopathological entities which cause renal failure in juvenile, adolescent, and young adult dogs. To date, nephropathies believed to have a genetic basis have been described in 11 breeds. These disorders represent a variety of developmental, degenerative, and metabolic defects. Many canine hereditary nephropathies are analogous to childhood nephropathies in man. Review of the veterinary literature, comparative pathology, and avenues of future research are discussed.

Two native humpless types of Bos taurus cattle which are tolerant to trypanosomiasis were described in West Africa at the beginning of this century. In spite of the fact that they are small breeds, they already represent some 25% of all cattle present in the region. Their importation into the Congo basin countries has resulted in the development of a cattle industry. Some of the available data on these types are given and discussed. The possibility of satisfying the growing hunger for protein of Africa with trypanotolerant cattle is emphasized.

Duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) poses a significant threat to the waterfowl breeding industry in China. Here, we constructed a recombinant duck enteritis virus (DEV) expressing the entire E protein of DTMUV, named rDEV-ERT, using homologous recombination and the Cre-Lox system.
