Update: Influenza Activity - United States.

CDC collects, compiles, and analyzes data on influenza activity year-round in the United States. The influenza season generally begins in the fall and continues through the winter and spring months; however, the timing and severity of circulating influenza viruses can vary by geographic location and season. Influenza activity in the United States remained low through October and November in 2015. Influenza A viruses have been most frequently identified, with influenza A (H3) viruses predominating. This report summarizes U.S. influenza activity for the period October 4-November 28, 2015.

Continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure and end tidal carbon dioxide variations in traumatic brain injury: introducing the carbon dioxide reactivity index (CO2Rx).

PURPOSE: The continuous monitoring of cerebral metabolic autoregulation in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is poorly documented in the literature and largely absent from clinical practice. This study aimed to assess whether variations in intracranial pressure (ICP) and end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) can form the basis of an index for cerebrovascular autoregulation reactivity, and whether this index can improve the prediction of clinical outcomes in both adult and pediatric TBI patients. METHODS: Data from adult and pediatric patients with severe TBI were retrospectively an

Excess mortality during COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh - evidence from a rural survey.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) had a profound impact worldwide. In Bangladesh, the official number of deaths for COVID-19 was around 29 000. However, many countries including Bangladesh experienced substantial underreporting of COVID-19 deaths due to lack of complete national civil registration system. This study aims to estimate excess mortality in 2020, identify risk factors, and determine leading causes of death in Bangladesh. METHODS: In February 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional household survey in Sitakunda, a subdistrict of Chattogram, identifying deaths from Ja

Clinical Features and Outcome of Children with Severe Lower Respiratory Tract Infection Admitted to a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in South Africa.

AIM: Severe acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRTI) remains an important cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. METHODS: This is a 12-month retrospective cohort study of children (0-12 years) admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with ALRTI to investigate risk factors, clinical course and in-hospital survival. RESULTS: In total, 265 patients (median age = 4 months [2-12 months]) were identified. In all,102 (38.5%) had co-morbid disease. Twenty-seven (10.2%) were HIV-infected and 87 (32.8%) were HIV-exposed. In-hospital mortality was 34 (12.8%)-24 (9.1%) in PICU and

Epidemiological analysis of pediatric burns in the Dominican Republic reveals a demographic profile at significant risk for electrical burns.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric burns are preventable with legislative and infrastructural changes. Although retrospective audits of many low- and middle-income countries have aided preventative efforts, the epidemiological status of burns in the Caribbean is not known. This study characterizes pediatric burns in the Dominican Republic (DR) and compares these to age-matched North American records captured by the National Burn Repository. METHODS: A retrospective audit of 1600 patients admitted to the Unidad de Niños Quemados Dra. Thelma Rosario Hospital, the island's only major pediatric burn center, be

Prehospital blood transfusions in pediatric trauma and nontrauma patients: a single-center review of safety and outcomes.

PURPOSE: Prehospital transfusions are a novel yet increasingly accepted intervention in the adult population as part of remote damage control resuscitation, but prehospital transfusions remain controversial in children. Our purpose was to review our pediatric prehospital transfusion experience over 12 years to describe the safety of prehospital transfusion in appropriately triaged trauma and nontrauma patients. METHODS: Children (<18 years) transfused with packed red blood cells (pRBC) or plasma during transport to a single regional academic medical center between 2002 and 2014 were identifie

Listeria monocytogenes meningitis in the Netherlands, 1985-2014: A nationwide surveillance study.

OBJECTIVES: Listeria monocytogenes can cause sepsis and meningitis. We report national surveillance data on L. monocytogenes meningitis in the Netherlands, describing incidence changes, genetic epidemiology and fatality rate. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Netherlands Reference Laboratory of Bacterial Meningitis for cases of L. monocytogenes meningitis. Strains were assessed by serotyping and bacterial population structure by multi-locus sequence typing. RESULTS: A total of 375 cases of Listeria meningitis were identified between 1985 and 2014. Peak incidence rates were observed in neona

Increased rates of intensive care unit admission in patients with Mycoplasma pneumoniae: a retrospective study.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a leading cause of respiratory disease. In the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting M. pneumoniae is not considered a common pathogen. In 2010-13 an epidemic of M. pneumoniae-associated infections was reported and we observed an increase of M. pneumoniae patients admitted to ICU. We analysed the cohort of all M. pneumoniae-positive patients' admissions during 2007 to 2012 at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Centre (a 1100-bed tertiary medical centre). Mycoplasma pneumoniae diagnosis was made routinely using PCR on throat swabs and other respiratory samples. Clinical
