Assessing the Reduction of Recurrent Admissions Using OM-85 for the Treatment of Preschool Wheeze (ARROW): Protocol for a Multi-Centre, Randomised, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

AIMS: Acute wheezing illnesses are among the most common reasons preschool-aged children are admitted to hospital. Readmission rates are high, and novel preventive strategies are required. OM-85 is an orally administered bacterial lysate that stimulates anti-viral immune responses and reduces excessive airway inflammation associated with wheezing episodes. The aim of the Assessing the Reduction of Recurrent admissions using OM-85 for the treatment of preschool Wheeze (ARROW) trial is to determine the efficacy of OM-85 in preventing hospital readmissions in children admitted to hospital with pr

Aberrant Neural Entrainment to Word-Level Speech Patterns in Fragile X Syndrome: Evidence for a Statistical Learning Deficit.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder, causes significant language and cognitive impairments. Statistical learning refers to the ability to extract patterns from sensory input through mere exposure and plays a central role in language acquisition. Surprisingly, statistical learning in FXS has not been explored. Given that children with FXS typically follow a delayed developmental trajectory for language, we hypothesized that they would show impaired statistical learning. To test this hypothesis, we used an EEG measure

A predictive tool for early treatment escalation after initiation of moderate-efficacy therapy in pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Early initiation of high-efficacy therapies (HETs) has been associated with improved disease control in pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS). However, some children remain clinically stable on low-/moderate-efficacy therapies (METs), highlighting the need for decision-support tools. OBJECTIVE: To develop a Therapeutic Escalation Score (TES) to identify children at low risk of early escalation after initiating MET. METHODS: We analyzed treatment-naïve children with POMS who initiated MET between 2010 and 2024 in the French MS registry (Observatoire Français de la Sclérose en

Harmonizing data on correlates of sleep in children within and across neurodevelopmental disorders: lessons learned from an Ontario Brain Institute cross-program collaboration.

There is an increasing desire to study neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) together to understand commonalities to develop generic health promotion strategies and improve clinical treatment. Common data elements (CDEs) collected across studies involving children with NDDs afford an opportunity to answer clinically meaningful questions. We undertook a retrospective, secondary analysis of data pertaining to sleep in children with different NDDs collected through various research studies. The objective of this paper is to share lessons learned for data management, collation, and harmonization fro

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of a Cohort of Children with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex with Epileptic Spasms.

The neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) with epileptic spasms remain underdiagnosed and might be responsible for significant morbidity and mortality burdens, even after spasms abate. The study was a cross-sectional study over 18 months at a tertiary care pediatric hospital, involving 30 children with TSC who had epileptic spasms. They were assessed with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and intellectual disability (ID), and childhood psyc

A Model of the Home Literacy Environment and Family Risk of Reading Difficulty in Relation to Children's Preschool Emergent Literacy.

This study extends the research on the preschool home literacy environment (HLE) in the context of the family risk (FR) of reading disability (RD) by examining a multiple-deficit model of RD. A total of 1,171 six-year-old Norwegian children were assessed at school entry, the onset of formal reading instruction in Norway. Their parents completed a questionnaire regarding their own RD, education, and the HLE. The final sample after applying the inclusion criteria was 794 children and their parents. The findings suggest, first, that two HLE factors (access to print and reading-related activities)

Intranasal ketorolac versus intravenous ketorolac for treatment of migraine headaches in children: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous ketorolac is commonly used for treating migraine headaches in children. However, the prerequisite placement of an intravenous line can be technically challenging, time-consuming, and associated with pain and distress. Intranasal ketorolac may be an effective alternative that is needle-free and easier to administer. We aimed to determine whether intranasal ketorolac is non-inferior to intravenous ketorolac for reducing pain in children with migraine headaches. METHODS: We conducted a randomized double-blind non-inferiority clinical trial. Children aged 8-17 years with m
