The diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis in association with autoimmune hepatitis was made in this case after the discovery of inflammatory bowel disease prompted a cholangiogram. Immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine prior to ERCP resulted in a significant decrease in serum aminotransferase. A retrospective analysis of 143 patients submitted to sphincteroplasty at the Department of Surgery, University of Chile Clinical Hospital was performed. A significant percentage of these patients (90%) were admitted due to acute biliary tract disease with or without cholangitis.
