Familial Hypercholesterolemia in the Arabian Gulf Region: Clinical results of the Gulf FH Registry.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common autosomal dominant disorder that can result in premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Limited data are available worldwide about the prevalence and management of FH. Here, we aimed to estimate the prevalence and management of patients with FH in five Arabian Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain). METHODS: The multicentre, multinational Gulf FH registry included adults (≥18 years old) recruited from outpatient clinics in 14 tertiary-care centres across five Arabian Gu

The differences between insulin glargine U300 and insulin degludec U100 in impact on the glycaemic variability, arterial stiffness and the lipid profiles in insulin naïve patients suffering from type two diabetes mellitus - outcomes from cross-over open-label randomized trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diabetes mellitus type two is one of the major cardiovascular risk factors. Treatment of diabetes can reduce this risk, but the treatment options differ a lot in their risk-reducing capabilities. We compared the impact of insulin degludec (IDeg-100) and insulin glargine U300 (IGlar-300) on cardiovascular risk parameters - glycaemic variability (GV), arterial stiffness and lipid parameters - in insulin naive patients with DMT2. METHODS: To 23 individuals who previously had uncontrolled DMT2 on two or more oral antidiabetic drugs, IGlar-300 and IDeg-100 were applied for 12

Immunometabolic factors in adolescent chronic disease are associated with Th1 skewing of invariant Natural Killer T cells.

Invariant Natural Killer T (iNKT) cells respond to the ligation of lipid antigen-CD1d complexes via their T-cell receptor and are implicated in various immunometabolic diseases. We considered that immunometabolic factors might affect iNKT cell function. To this end, we investigated iNKT cell phenotype and function in a cohort of adolescents with chronic disease and immunometabolic abnormalities. We analyzed peripheral blood iNKT cells of adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF, n = 24), corrected coarctation of the aorta (CoA, n = 25), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA, n = 20), obesity (OB, n =

The association between anthropometric parameters and cardiovascular risk indicators in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

BACKGROUND: In patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), this is now hypothesized that whether increased risk for cardiovascular disorders is related more to obesity than PCOS per se. This study aimed to compare cardiovascular risk factors between the lean and obese women with PCOS. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted on 86 (43 obese and 43 lean) women with PCOS. The presence of overweight and obesity was defined based on the body mass index (BMI) (> 25 kg/m2). The study objectives were first to compare mean levels of cardiovascular laboratory parameters between lean and ob

Is treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus (insulin therapy, metabolic control) optimal for preventing cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy?

INTRODUCTION: Long-term poor metabolic control promotes the occurrence of microvascular complications, such as cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) and atherogenic hyperlipidaemia, which translates into increased mortality in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of CAN in patients with T1DM in relation to treatment method (continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion, CSII, versus multiple daily injections using pens, MDI) and metabolic control. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group comprised 93 adults (60 women, 33 men), mean age 3

Effects of Atorvastatin Dose and Concomitant Use of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors on Renal Function Changes over Time in Patients with Stable Coronary Artery Disease: A Prospective Observational Study.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) and statins are widely used in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Our aim was to compare changes in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) over time in subjects with stable CAD according to atorvastatin dose and concomitant use of ACEI. We studied 78 men with stable CAD referred for an elective coronary angiography who attained the then-current guideline-recommended target level of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol below 2.5 mmol/L in a routine fasting lipid panel on admission and were receiving atorvastatin at a daily dose of 10-40

Low levels of IgG autoantibodies against the apolipoprotein B antigen p210 increases the risk of cardiovascular death after carotid endarterectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Autoimmune responses against oxidized-LDL (oxLDL) have been suggested to modulate inflammation in atherosclerosis. Previous studies showed an association between autoantibodies against the apolipoprotein B (apoB) p210 antigen and a lower risk of cardiovascular (CV) events. In the present study we investigated if autoantibodies against p210 at the time of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) predict risk for future CV events. METHODS: Native (nat) and malondialdehyde (MDA)-modified apoB p210 autoantibodies (IgM-p210nat, IgG-p210nat, IgM-p210MDA and IgG-p210MDA) were analyzed by ELISA from

Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 and cardiovascular disease risk in HIV infection.

OBJECTIVES: HIV-infected patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) have an increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk as a result of heightened inflammation and immune activation, despite at times having normal lipids and few traditional risk factors. Biomarkers are needed to identify such patients before a clinical event. Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2 ) predicts CVD events in the general population. This study investigated the relationship between Lp-PLA2 and markers of CVD risk, systemic inflammation, immune activation, and coagulation in HIV infection. METHODS: One hundr

Association of genetic variants influencing lipid levels with coronary artery disease in Japanese individuals.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: In Japanese populations, we performed a replication study of genetic loci previously identified in European-descent populations as being associated with lipid levels and risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: We genotyped 48 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 22 candidate loci that had previously been identified by genome-wide association (GWA) meta-analyses for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and/or triglycerides in Europeans. We selected 22 loci with 2 parallel tracks from 95 reported loci: 16
