The risk of maternal phenylketonuria and hyperphenylalaninemia syndrome, a preventable cause of severe birth defects and retardation with a near 100% recurrence risk if untreated, is increasing in the United States. C-reactive protein, CRP, was followed longitudinally in 41 patients being treated for acute leukemia. It was analysed by a rapid (2-h) immunochemical assay in a laser-nephelometer. The cytostatic treatment given either intravenously or intrathecally did not cause any CRP increase with the exception of 7% of the treatment courses, given to 3 patients, and neither did transfusion reactions. Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is a reactional state of lepromatous leprosy in which the loss of suppressor cell function, decrease in suppressor cell numbers, and increase of interleukin 2 production are observed. The utilization of psychotropic drugs in patients with advanced neoplastic disease was studied over a 14-month period. Eight hundred twenty-four (82.4%) of one thousand consecutively admitted patients were prescribed at least one psychotropic agent. Antipsychotic agents were prescribed for 61.3% and hypnotics for 55.8% of the total patient sample. Only one out of ten patients received an antidepressant medication. Serum creatine kinase (CK) activity was measured after intramuscular injections in 44 patients hospitalized for non-cardiac reasons. The drugs injected were: diazepam, dipyrone, metoclopramide, meperidine, pentazocine and procaine penicillin. Only 3 out of 44 patients (7%) demonstrated significant elevation of CK levels following the intramuscular injections. Between January 1 and March 31, 1983, 103 patients scheduled for prostatic surgery were blindly evaluated preoperatively by suprapubic real time sonography. Prospectively, the sensitivity was 72.7%, specificity 72.2%, predictive value of positive test 51.6% and predictive value of negative 86.7% for the detection of prostatic carcinoma. Weight reduction attitudes and practices were obtained from a sample of 400 female students. Forty-eight percent reported using a weight loss program since admission to college. The programs most often selected included hypocaloric diets and exercise.
