A core symptom of schizophrenia is thought disorder (TD). The cognitive abilities of semantic processing and executive function are argued to be etiologically linked to TD. However, there has been no comprehensive investigation of neurocognition in TD to date. The neurocognitive profile of 58 schizophrenia patients and 48 healthy controls was examined using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery and the D-KEFS Color-Word Interference Test. TD patients performed more poorly than non-TD patients on the cognitive domains of Verbal Learning and Inhibition, reflective of semantic and executive fun

The clinical signs of Alzheimer Disease can be quantitated and correlated with neuropathological evidence of the disease. These clinical signs which include amnesia, aphasia and apraxia can be screened for using instruments such as the Mini-Mental State Exam. In addition, each of these cognitive functions can be quantitated using specific tests. Standardized scores are available for a mini mental state but further research is needed to develop normative data for more detailed psychological assessment tests of specific cognitive deficits. The fact that the cognitive impairment predicts the neur

Hashimoto's encephalopathy is an immune-mediated disorder characterized by acute or subacute encephalopathy related to increased anti-thyroid antibodies. Clinical manifestations of Hashimoto's encephalopathy may include stroke-like episodes, altered consciousness, psychosis, myoclonus, abnormal movements, seizures, and cognitive dysfunction. Acute cognitive dysfunction with convulsion as initial clinical manifestations of Hashimoto's encephalopathy is very rare. We report a 65-year-old man who developed acute onset of cognitive decline and convulsion due to Hashimoto's encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use is highly prevalent among people with psychotic disorders. While there is some indication that cannabis use exacerbates psychosis symptoms, its neurocognitive effects remain unclear. Co-use of cannabis and tobacco is increasing in the general population, but little is known about its effects in people with psychosis or those at risk for developing a psychotic disorder, including its effects on cognitive performance.
METHODS: We analyzed data from NAPLS2 (North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study 2), a multisite prospective study of individuals at clinical high risk f

BACKGROUND: With increasing age older patients are at higher risk for cognitive decline after surgery. Even tailored anesthesia procedures in older patients remain a high risk for postoperative cognitive disorder. Additional stress derived from anxiety and anesthesia itself can negatively impact postoperative cognitive outcomes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of general versus regional anesthesia on postoperative cognitive disorder and indicators of perioperative stress in elderly undergoing surgery.
METHODS: In this single center prospective study between December 201

Changes in neurovascular coupling are associated with both Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia in later life, but this may be confounded by cerebrovascular risk. We hypothesized that hemodynamic latency would be associated with reduced cognitive functioning across the lifespan, holding constant demographic and cerebrovascular risk. In 387 adults aged 18-85 (mean = 48.82), dynamic causal modeling was used to estimate the hemodynamic response function in the left and right V1 and V3-ventral regions of the visual cortex in response to a simple checkerboard block design stimulus with minimal

BACKGROUND: Plasma phosphorylated-tau at threonine-217 (p-tau217) and threonine-181 (p-tau181) are scalable, minimally invasive biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. In Parkinson's disease (PD), AD co-pathology may contribute to its clinical heterogeneity. However, the existing literature has predominantly focused on p-tau181, with comparatively limited investigation of p-tau217.
OBJECTIVE: The aim is to evaluate plasma p-tau217 and p-tau181 as biomarkers of AD co-pathology across the PD cognitive spectrum, relative to a cohort of dementia-free older adults.
METHODS: Plasma p-tau

OBJECTIVE: Prior work evaluating cognitive flexibility (i.e., the ability to alter behavior in response to environmental changes) in bulimia-spectrum eating disorders (BN-ED) has produced mixed findings, perhaps due to reliance on set-shifting paradigms that do not effectively isolate cognitive flexibility. Task-switching paradigms are more precise, but no study has examined task-switching in BN-ED. Further, no study has examined whether cognitive flexibility deficits in BN-ED are disorder-specific (e.g., confined to food-related responses). Thus, the present study re-evaluated cognitive flexi

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit and/or hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent psychiatric disorder in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) and frequently persists into adulthood. Although medication with stimulant has been demonstrated to be highly effective in idiopathic ADHD, evidence in 22q11DS is still scarce. Previous studies have shown safety and effectiveness of methylphenidate (MPH) on core symptoms of ADHD as well as improvement of associated cognitive deficits. However, only a limited number of cognitive domains have been explored.

Cognitive impairment (CI) and fatigue are common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), with well-known profound effects on quality of life. Sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), are also common in MS patients. The presence of CI has previously been shown to strongly correlate with OSA diagnosed using polysomnography in MS. Treatment of OSA has not previously been investigated as a potential modality to improve cognition in MS patients. Therefore, we sought to investigate the potential effects of OSA treatment on both cognitive function and fatigue in MS patients. Twenty-

OBJECTIVES: Apathy is a debilitating symptom of Huntington's disease (HD) and manifests before motor diagnosis, making it an excellent therapeutic target in the preclinical phase of Huntington's disease (prHD). HD is a neurological genetic disorder characterized by cognitive and motor impairment, and psychiatric abnormalities. Apathy is not well characterized within the prHD. In previous literature, damage to the caudate and putamen has been correlated with increased apathy in other neurodegenerative and movement disorders. The objective of this study was to determine whether apathy severity i

Network connectivity measured with resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) has revealed the contribution of distinct cerebellar lobules to an array of brain wide networks sub-serving motor and cognitive processes. As distinct cerebellar lobules form relatively accessible nodes of different brain networks, this raises the possibility for site-specific modulation of network connectivity using non-invasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Continuous theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (cTBS) induces long-lasting inhibitio

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is frequent in people with bipolar I disorder (BD I) and has a major impact on the course of the illness. Although obesity negatively influences cognitive function in patients with BD, its impact in the early phase of the disorder is unknown. We investigated the impact of overweight and obesity on cognitive functioning in clinically stable patients with BD recently recovered from their first manic episode.
METHOD: Sixty-five patients with BD (25 overweight or obese and 40 normal weight) recently remitted from a first episode of mania and 37 age- and sex-matched healthy cont

The study aimed at exploring the effectiveness of cognitive intervention with the new "Instrumental Enrichment Basic" program (IE-basic), based on Feuerstein's theory of structural cognitive modifiability that contends that a child's cognitive functioning can be significantly modified through mediated learning intervention. The IE-basic progam is aimed at enhancing domain-general cognitive functioning in a number of areas (systematic perception, self-regulation abilities, conceptual vocabulary, planning, decoding emotions and social relations) as well as transferring learnt principles to daily

Despite consensus that schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive deficits, objective data documenting the course of cognitive development remain sparse. We conducted a follow-back study of patients ascertained at the time of their initial episode of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, and a group of demographically matched healthy volunteers. We obtained school records containing standardized achievement test scores from the 1st through 12th grades, and scholastic aptitude test results from the 11th and 12th grades, and examined the developmental trajecto

Alzheimer Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by loss of memory, difficulty in thinking, changes in behavior and personality disorders. The risk of developing epileptic seizures (ES) in patients with AD increases significantly. Animal and human studies have shown a close relationship between the pathogenesis of ES and AD. The exact prevalence of ES in AD remains unclear due to methodological difficulties, in particular, detection of ES in patients with cognitive impairment. EP types differ in sporadic and hereditary forms of AD. Antiepileptic therapy in AD ha
