The management of asthma in adult patients in the community pharmacy setting: Literature review.

BACKGROUND: Asthma poses a public health concern, with an estimated 235 million people currently living with the condition globally. The provision of evidence-based, patient-centred services for adult asthma patients in community pharmacy which involves collaboration across the multidisciplinary team could improve their asthma control. OBJECTIVES: A literature review was conducted to examine the evidence of asthma management in community pharmacy setting. METHODS: Five databases were searched to identify relevant articles published before February 2021. Screening of the potential studies was

COVID-19 Pandemic and Physical Exercise: Lessons Learnt for Confined Communities.

The novel pandemic called "Coronavirus Disease 2019" (COVID-19), as a global public health emergency and global threat, has affected many countries in unpredictable ways and impacted on physical activity (PA) behaviors to various extents. Specific populations including refugees, asylum seekers, and prisoners, are vulnerable groups with multiple complex health needs and worse health outcomes with respect to the general population worldwide and at high risk of death from the "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-related Coronavirus type 2" (SARS-CoV-2). Governments around the world have been implem

A collaborative genetic carrier screening model for the British Ashkenazi Jewish community.

We present a unique model of a British genetic carrier screening programme for individuals with Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry that exemplifies a partnership between a publicly funded healthcare service (the NHS) and a charity, Jnetics. This model provides affordable access to carrier screening for severe autosomal recessive diseases increased in this community. Prior to the development of this programme, the British healthcare system only provided Tay Sachs' screening for this community, leaving them at higher risk of having a child with a serious autosomal recessive disease. The Jnetics screening

Influence of pipe materials on the microbial community in unchlorinated drinking water and biofilm.

Biodegradable compounds can cause undesired microbial growth in drinking water systems and these compounds can originate from the water or pipe materials used in drinking water systems. The aim of our study was to determine the influence of different pipe materials on the microbial populations in water and biofilm under semi-stagnant conditions. The microbial communities in biofilm and water, which were in contact with seven different materials, were characterized by determining ATP concentrations, microbial composition gene copy numbers of some specific microbial groups. The ATP concentration

Cross-Feeding of a Toxic Metabolite in a Synthetic Lignocellulose-Degrading Microbial Community.

The recalcitrance of complex organic polymers such as lignocellulose is one of the major obstacles to sustainable energy production from plant biomass, and the generation of toxic intermediates can negatively impact the efficiency of microbial lignocellulose degradation. Here, we describe the development of a model microbial consortium for studying lignocellulose degradation, with the specific goal of mitigating the production of the toxin formaldehyde during the breakdown of methoxylated aromatic compounds. Included are Pseudomonas putida, a lignin degrader; Cellulomonas fimi, a cellulose deg

Engaging Frontline Providers Prevents Hypothermia and Improves Communication in the Postoperative Neonate.

BACKGROUND: Neonates undergoing surgery are at high risk for perioperative hypothermia. Hypothermia has been associated with increased adverse events. Transfer of care from the operating room (OR) to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) adds another layer of risk for this population introducing the potential for miscommunication leading to preventable adverse events. PURPOSE: The aim of this quality improvement initiative is to decrease mean postoperative hypothermia rate and achieve compliance with use of a standardized postoperative hand-off in neonates transferred to the NICU from the O

[Current microbiological aspects of community respiratory infection beyond COVID-19].

From a microbiological point of view, both empirical and targeted antimicrobial treatment in respiratory infection is based on the sensitivity profile of isolated microorganisms and the possible resistance mechanisms that they may present. The latter may vary in different geographic areas according to prescription profiles and vaccination programs. Beta-lactam antibiotics, fluoroquinolones, and macrolides are the most commonly used antimicrobials during the exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and community-acquired pneumonia. In their prescription, different aspects such as

Global and communicative development skills in preschool children with cleft lip and palate.

IMPORTANCE: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is globally among the most common childhood malformations. This disorder impacts childhood development, including speech and language, and affects children worldwide. OBJECTIVE: To analyze child development skills (adaptive fine motor, gross motor, personal-social, and language) in preschool children with isolated CLP compared with children without this malformation. METHODS: The participants included an experimental group of 27 children with isolated CLP and a comparison group of 27 children without CLP aged between 48 and 59 months. The groups were ev

Influence of Family and Community Socioeconomic Status on the Risk of Adolescent Drug Use.

Background: Adolescent drug use increases the risk of mental, physical and social problems later in life and so it is important to understand its complex etiology that likely includes socioeconomic status (SES). We undertook the present analysis using data from a population-based retrospective cohort study to examine the influence of family and community SES in relation to adolescent drug use. We hypothesized that lower levels of community and parental SES would increase the risk of use and that there would be stronger associations for the more proximate family-level factors. Methods: We used

Community-acquired pneumonia in infants: Not simply an acute event with complete recovery.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia in infancy has been linked to long-term consequences for the rapidly developing lung. We examined the impact of hospitalized community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) on subsequent respiratory health. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective matched-cohort study using the Optum® de-identified Electronic Health Record Dataset (2009-2018). Study population comprised healthy infants hospitalized for CAP ("CAP patients"), and matched comparators without pneumonia ("comparison patients"), before age 2 years. Study outcomes included any chronic respiratory disorder, reactive airway dise

Chronic kidney disease and subclinical abnormalities of left heart mechanics in the community.

AIMS: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, although the pathophysiological mechanisms are not fully studied. This study aimed to determine whether CKD could adversely affect subclinical left heart function in a sample of the general population without cardiac disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined 1158 participants who voluntarily underwent extensive cardiovascular examination including laboratory test and two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography to assess left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LVGLS) and left atrial

Cows' reproductive performances and parity order influences the cervicovaginal fungal community.

Fungi have already been described as etiological agents of reproductive diseases such as endometritis and infertility in cows. However, few studies have been developed to elucidate the entire cervicovaginal fungal communities in cows. Therefore, our study aimed to characterize the fungal community present in the cervix of cows with different reproductive performances. Cervicovaginal mucus was collected from 36 Angus breed cows (1.5-12 years old) on a commercial beef cattle ranch. Twenty-one cows had a history of infertility in the year prior to the collection, showing early return to estrus. T

Lessons from implementing community-based group classes for severe hypertension.

Due to the impact of persistent structural racism, Black men have low rates of hypertension treatment and control despite having high rates of hypertension-related mortality. Peer-based education can improve blood pressure monitoring and lower blood pressure in Black men with hypertension. To address this disparity, we implemented weekly community-based group classes for severe hypertension at a Federally Qualified Health Center. After 9 months, 28 classes were held and 96 individuals were served. Fifty-six percent of the person-hours of attendance have been by Black men. Seven individuals wer

The comparison of microbial communities in thyroid tissues from thyroid carcinoma patients.

Thyroid carcinoma is a common endocrine organ cancer associated with abnormal hormone secretion, leading to the disorder of metabolism. The intestinal microbiota is vital to maintain digestive and immunologic homeostasis. The relevant information of the microbial community in the gut and thyroid, including composition, structure, and relationship, is unclear in thyroid carcinoma patients. A total of 93 samples from 25 patients were included in this study. The results showed that microbial communities existed in thyroid tissue; gut and thyroid had high abundance of facultative anaerobes from th

Spina bifida care, education, and research: A multidisciplinary community in a global context.

Worldwide neural tube defects, such as encephalocele and spina bifida (SB), remain a substantial cause of the global burden of disease; and in the US, Latinos consistently have a higher birth prevalence of SB compared with other ethnic groups. From limited access and fragmented care, to scarcely available adult services, many are the challenges that besiege those living with SB. Thus, to provide inclusion and active involvement of parents of children and adults with SB from all communities, innovative approaches will be required, such as community-based participatory research and culturally co

Alpha-Gal Allergy as a Cause of Intestinal Symptoms in a Gastroenterology Community Practice.

OBJECTIVES: Immunoglobulin E (IgE) to galactose-α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) is a recently appreciated cause of allergic reactions to mammalian meat and dairy. In eastern North America Lone Star tick bites are the dominant mode of sensitization. Classically the alpha-gal syndrome manifests with urticaria, gastrointestinal symptoms, and/or anaphylaxis, but increasingly there are reports of isolated gastrointestinal symptoms without other common allergic manifestations. The objective of this retrospective study was to determine the frequency of IgE to alpha-gal in patients presenting with unexpla
