The B-cell response to foot-and-mouth-disease virus in cattle following vaccination and live-virus challenge.

Antibodies play a pivotal role against viral infection, and maintenance of protection is dependent on plasma and memory B-cells. Understanding antigen-specific B-cell responses in cattle is essential to inform future vaccine design. We have previously defined T-cell-dependent and -independent B-cell responses in cattle, as a prelude to investigating foot-and-mouth-disease-virus (FMDV)-specific B-cell responses. In this study, we have used an FMDV O-serotype vaccination (O1-Manisa or O SKR) and live-virus challenge (FMDV O SKR) to investigate the homologous and heterologous B-cell response in c

TLR4-mediated sensing of Campylobacter jejuni by dendritic cells is determined by sialylation.

In Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), ganglioside mimicry of Campylobacter jejuni lipo-oligosaccharide (LOS) drives the production of cross-reactive Abs to peripheral nerve gangliosides. We determined whether sialic acid residues in C. jejuni LOS modulate dendritic cell (DC) activation and subsequent B cell proliferation as a possible mechanism for the aberrant humoral immune response in GBS. Highly purified sialylated LOS of C. jejuni isolates from three GBS patients induced human DC maturation and secretion of inflammatory cytokines that were inhibited by anti-TLR4 neutralizing Abs. The extent o

Plague epizootic cycles in Central Asia.

Infection thresholds, widely used in disease epidemiology, may operate on host abundance and, if present, on vector abundance. For wildlife populations, host and vector abundances often vary greatly across years and consequently the threshold may be crossed regularly, both up- and downward. Moreover, vector and host abundances may be interdependent, which may affect the infection dynamics. Theory predicts that if the relevant abundance, or combination of abundances, is above the threshold, then the infection is able to spread; if not, it is bound to fade out. In practice, though, the observed

Application of the quality control circle model to reduce non-conforming surgical instrument packaging and hospital-acquired infection risk: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), particularly postoperative infections, remain a major global concern, and deficiencies in surgical instrument packaging represent an important and preventable risk factor. The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) plays a critical role in maintaining sterile assurance; however, process-related packaging non-conformance can compromise patient safety. This pilot study aimed to apply the Quality Control Circle (QCC) model to reduce non-conforming surgical instrument packaging and strengthen infection prevention capability in a tertiary hospi

Use of a medical alert tool is associated with faster time to placement in contact precautions in patients with multidrug-resistant organism colonization/infection history.

BACKGROUND: Placing patients on contact precautions (CP) reduces the spread of infection. VA Bug Alert (VABA) was developed to notify VA infection control staff of new patients with multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) colonization or infection. This study examined the link between VABA use and CP initiation. METHODS: Patients who had an MDRO-positive culture were included. Medical chart reviews were conducted on 660 admissions for evidence of a CP order. Logistic regression determined the likelihood of patients being placed into CP within 24 hours of admission. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis

Advancing the science of Staphylococcus aureus infection prevention in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Despite advances in infection prevention, infections due to Staphylococcus aureus continue to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in NICUs. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) using advanced analytic approaches for defining transmission have shed new insights into transmission and persistence patterns in the NICU. WGS has also helped uncover important associations between transmission, persistence, and the risk of invasive infections. Current infection prevention strategies rely on hand hygiene compliance and surveillance and decolonization of patients positive for S. aureus. Parent dec

Genomic tracing and resolution of environmental Klebsiella pneumoniae ST307 CTX-M-15 linked to a nosocomial urinary tract infection in a cat: a veterinary teaching hospital case study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a significant concern in human medicine and have increasingly been reported in veterinary settings as well. Veterinary Teaching Hospitals may present a heightened risk for HAIs, partly due to the lack of standardized infection control measures and screening protocols. In May 2022, a cat previously hospitalized at a Veterinary Teaching Hospital for urinary tract obstruction developed a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). A multidrug-resistant (MDR) strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae was isolated. To investigate the suspected HAI
