Contribution of Tinnitus Burden and Hearing Loss to Geriatric Depression.

OBJECTIVE: Determine if tinnitus is a potential confounding variable in the study of hearing loss and depression in older populations. METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study using data from the 2005 to 2006, 2009 to 2010 and 2017 to 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The subpopulation (n = 2352) was aged > 69 years. We selected a cutoff of 69 years to focus specifically on elderly adults; as a result, these findings are not generalizable to younger adults with tinnitus and hearing loss. A logistic regression model used depression as the binary response vari

Role of social capital on edentulism, social participation and cognition.

OBJECTIVES: The role of social factors in the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive function remains underexplored. This cross-sectional study investigates whether social participation mediates the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive function, and whether contextual social capital moderates these associations among older Chinese adults. METHODS: Data from 7796 Chinese adults aged ≥65 was obtained from the 2017-18 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Tooth loss was self-reported and cognitive function was measured using the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental

Perceptions of health, cognition, and pain among middle-aged and older adults with migraine: A population-based cross-sectional study examining findings from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

OBJECTIVE: The study compared middle-aged and older Canadians with and without migraine, examining how self-perceptions of health, cognition, and pain relate to objective health metrics. BACKGROUND: Migraine, a debilitating neurological disorder, affects 8.3% of Canadians and 14.0% of the global population. Research has primarily focused on those aged 18-50 years, leaving middle-aged and older adults understudied. Individuals' perceptions of their health, cognition, and pain can tangibly impact their well-being, with negative health self-perceptions linked to higher hospitalization, illness,

Associations Between Female Sex Hormones and Skeletal Muscle Ageing: The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.

BACKGROUND: To date, most research investigating the influence of circulating sex hormones on ageing female skeletal muscle has been cross-sectional and focused only on dichotomised young and old, or pre- versus post-menopausal groups. This excludes an important transitional period from high to low circulating oestrogen. Using secondary data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, this study aimed to investigate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between circulating sex hormones and skeletal muscle mass and function across a continuum of ages. METHODS: Multiple and binomial

Association between brain structure and fine motor function: findings from the population-based Rhineland Study.

BACKGROUND: Although an association between brain atrophy and decreased fine motor function has been reported, results from previous studies are inconsistent. We aimed to investigate whether decreased fine motor function is reflected in age- and sex-associated changes in brain structure across the adult lifespan in a large community dwelling cohort study. METHODS: The Rhineland Study is an on-going population-based prospective cohort study in Bonn, Germany. We used cross-sectional data from the first 8318 participants of the Rhineland Study (age range: 30-95 years), who underwent baseline ass

Recent drinking in alcohol use disorder as a modifiable risk factor of postural tremor and instability in mild cognitive impairment: An initial study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption exacerbates health problems, including all-cause dementia, that will likely include 15%-20% with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often heralding dementia. Despite the increasing prevalence of MCI with hazardous drinking, this comorbidity is seldom considered yet may be a contributor to exacerbating age-related motor decline, debilitating morbidity, and premature mortality. METHODS: This mixed cross-sectional/longitudinal analysis included upward of 381 test sessions of balance platform testing using a microcomputer-controlled force plate for sway and tremor de

Association between serum triglyceride levels and venous thrombosis risk in older Chinese patients with fractures: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism is a serious complication in older fracture patients. While triglyceride levels are established cardiovascular risk factors, their role in venous thrombosis remains controversial, with inconsistent associations reported in general populations. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 522 older (≥75 years) fracture patients hospitalized in Kunshan, China (2017–2023). Lower-extremity venous thrombosis was assessed via ultrasonography, with serum triglycerides measured within 24 h of admission. Participants were categorized based on tri

Related factors of sarcopenia risk in Chinese older people - a cross-sectional study.

Numerous factors, including age chronic disease, level of education, and depression, affect the health and function of skeletal muscles. However, it is still unclear which factors affect skeletal muscle health in older age groups across age range segments. Decision tree and logistic regression models were employed in this study to examine the factors that influence older adults' likelihood of developing sarcopenia. The database information of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2015 was selected, and a sample of 2965 people who met the inclusion criteria was screened

Sarcopenic obesity and risk of falls: findings in Middle-aged and older Chinese population from CHARLS.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is increasingly recognized as a significant health concern, particularly among older populations. Existing literature indicates that SO elevates the risk for various adverse health outcomes such as cardiovascular diseases, fractures, higher all-cause mortality. However, evidence regarding its impact on the risk of falls remains limited and inconclusive. Our study aimed to investigate the association between SO and fall incidents. METHODS: A total of 10,905 participants were enrolled from the baseline survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal St
