BACKGROUND: Occupational contact urticaria (CU) from plants is often reported, but it is less often attributed to decorative houseplants. We present an atopic gardener and caretaker of plants who developed CU when occupationally exposed to weeping fig, spathe flower, and yucca.

We report the epidemiology of sunscreen allergy over a period of 5 years at the National Skin Centre. A total of 61 patients with suspected allergy to sunscreen underwent patch or photopatch testing to our sunscreen series from 1992 to 1996. The results were retrospectively analysed and evaluated. Out of these 61 patients, 5 were found to have positive patch test reactions to sunscreens. 2 were photoallergic, and 3 were allergic to active ingredients in sunscreens. Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC) has been used for years as a fungicide and bactericide for wood and paint preservation without any reports of cutaneous side-effects. The literature concerning textile dye dermatitis published during the last decade was reviewed. Sixty-one cases of dye-allergic contact dermatitis in which the presentation or course of the dermatitis was unusual or the dye allergen was one not previously reported have been described. Health care workers are a known risk group for occupational immediate type allergy to latex gloves, but users of household and other protective gloves have been less extensively studied. This article shows that non-health care workers form an even larger group with natural rubber latex allergy, which often is work related. Hand eczema and atopy are the most frequent risk factors for sensitization, therefore, dermatologists should be especially aware of the diagnostic methods and prevention.
