To investigate the pattern of innervation and the contractile properties of human iris sphincter muscle, we have observed the effects of field stimulation, various drugs and excess-K+ solutions on isometric tension development in strips of the iris sphincter from five humans. Spontaneous mechanical responses were not observed in these tissues. Electrical field stimulation (50 V, 0.8 msec, 20 Hz) evoked a contraction which was abolished by 10(-7) M tetrodotoxin (TTX) or by 10(-6) M atropine, thereby indicating that the response was cholinergically mediated. In the presence of atropine, electric

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation that delivers a constant low electric current through electrodes placed on the scalp. A significant amount of research has explored the clinical potential of tDCS in psychiatric disorders. However, the mechanism of tDCS' behavioural effects remains largely unknown. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is a surrogate marker of neural activity and has been used as an index of brain dysfunction in various psychiatric disorders. Studies have shown that single-session tDCS can modulate regional CBF in humans, however, t

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous auricular nerve stimulation (neuromodulation) is an analgesic technique involving the percutaneous implantation of multiple leads at various points on/around the ear followed by the delivery of electric current using an external pulse generator. A device is currently available within the USA cleared to treat symptoms from opioid withdrawal, and multiple reports suggest a possible postoperative analgesic effect. The current randomized, controlled pilot study was undertaken to (1) determine the feasibility and optimize the protocol for a subsequent definitive clinical tr

Large mixed axosomatic synapses (synaptic membrane with chemically "active zones" and electric "gap-junction" parts) within the region of the oculomotor nucleus of the trout were stimulated for a prolonged period of time (14 days) under physiological conditions. Concerning the great number of clear vesicles that are found in the presynaptic part of this type of synapse it can be said that they can be subdivided morphometrically into two classes with respect to the special membrane complexes of the mixed synapse (active zone, gap junction). This paper is designed to find out to what an extent t

Conditioned fear acquisition and extinction paradigms have been widely used both in animals and humans to examine the neurobiology of emotional memory. Studies have also shown that patients suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exhibit deficient extinction recall along with dysfunctional activation of the fear extinction network, including the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. A great deal of overlap exists between this fear extinction network and brain regions associated with symptom severity in PTSD. This suggests that the neural nodes of fear extinctio

The effects of corticosteroid pretreatment on the contraction caused by acetylcholine or electrical stimulation of guinea-pig ileum and duodenum were studied. The acetylcholine dose-response curves for steroid pretreated ileum but not duodenum were significantly shifted to the right; evidence that pretreated ileum required higher dose of acetylcholine than normal to cause 50% maximal contraction. Naloxone enhanced the contraction of normal ileum caused by acetylcholine given at the dose of ED50, but not that of normal duodenum. The dose of morphine required to abolish electrically induced cont

Nanocomposites hydrogel (nanohydrogel) composed of chitosan (CS) and montmorillonite (MMT) were prepared and systematically studied for drug release behavior following electrostimulation. The deterioration of the responsiveness and reversibility of CS upon repeated on-off electrostimulation switching operations are major limitations for clinical applications, as it suffers from too much structural instability for the precise control of the release of drug upon cyclic electrostimulation. To overcome these limitations, an inorganic phase, MMT, was incorporated in the CS matrix to enhance the ant

The diaphragm, a ventilatory muscle, has abundant sensory innervation. The effects of phrenic afferent activation on ventilation have been varied. In this study the proximal end of the phrenic nerve was electrically stimulated, and the effects on ventilation were measured in supine dogs anesthetized with either alpha-chloralose or pentobarbital sodium. We found a maximum increase in ventilation of 45 +/- 4% in the alpha-chloralose group and an increase in mean arterial blood pressure of 18 +/- 4%. This response was obtained at high stimulus intensities (60 times twitch threshold). Stimulation

Changes in the tail-flick latency to noxious heat were studied following electrical stimulation of the dorso-medial thalamus of the rat. Brief (15 sec), low intensity (35 microA) stimulation of the anterior pretectal nucleus caused no escape behavior or motor deficits but increased tail-flick latency for more than 45 min. Responses to non-noxious stimuli were enhanced but the animals were not hyperactive. The anterior pretectal nucleus does not receive retinal or accessory visual inputs like other parts of the pretectal complex but is known to receive axons from somatosensory cortex and projec

Intraneural electrical stimulation of sympathetic postganglionic axons was made in human skin nerves combined with recordings of skin resistance and a photoelectric pulse plethysmogram within the innervation zone. Tungsten microelectrodes were used first to record multiunit sympathetic activity in sural or median nerves. After blocking the nerve with local anaesthetics proximal to the recording site the electrodes were then used for intraneural stimulation. Stimulation led to reduction of skin resistance which was frequency dependent. A short train of stimuli reduced skin resistance transientl

In the past decade deep brain stimulation (DBS)-the application of electrical stimulation to specific target structures via implanted depth electrodes-has become the standard treatment for medically refractory Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. These diseases are characterized by pathological synchronized neuronal activity in particular brain areas. We present an external trial DBS device capable of administering effectively desynchronizing stimulation techniques developed with methods from nonlinear dynamics and statistical physics according to a model-based approach. These techniques

Accidental injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve is a common complication of thyroid surgery. Different mechanisms of injury have been described, such as mechanical, electrical, or thermal. Retrosternal operations, secondary bleeding requiring wound revision, or neoplastic tumors are also frequent causes of this complication. Intraoperative direct stimulation of suspected nerve structures as well as vagal nerve stimulation have been proposed to avoid the injury. The effect of stimulation can be assessed by direct observation of the vocal cords (direct laryngoscopy or fiberoscopy via a laryng

Morphological studies indicate that cholinergic, peptidergic and "nitrergic" (nitric oxide releasing) nerves supply the oesophageal muscle. In the present in vitro study, intramural nerves of guinea pig and human oesophagus were activated by means of the ganglion stimulating drug nicotine and electrical field stimulation (EFS) in organ bath experiments. In general, stimulation-induced primary contractions were diminished by atropine, while non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC) relaxations and after-contractions were inhibited by the NO-synthase inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA). Thus we o

Cholinergic stimulation of the pontine parabrachial region (PBR) produces behavioral nociceptive suppression in the awake cat. This report shows that electrical stimulation of both PBR sites (verified to be associated with behavioral nociceptive suppression on cholinergic stimulation) and the periaqueductal gray (PAG) excites raphe-spinal neurons which have been implicated in descending nociceptive suppression. Although several lines of evidence have strongly indicated that pathways from the PBR and PAG for nociceptive suppression are anatomically as well as neurochemically distinct, the resul

Bilateral subseizure stimulation of the amygdala given immediately following training in an inhibitory avoidance task produced retrograde amnesia. Hexamethonium (3.0 and 10.0 mg/kg), a peripherally acting nicotinic cholinergic antagonist, attenuated the retention deficits induced by amygdala stimulation if the drug was given 30 min prior to, but not immediately following training. Hexamethonium had no effect in normal unoperated animals, but did produce a retention deficit in operated control (nonstimulated) animals if it was given immediately following training (3.0 and 10.0 mg/kg). The resul

This review explores current and emerging neuromodulation techniques targeting the cardiac autonomic nervous system for the treatment and prevention of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Arrhythmias remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with the autonomic nervous system playing a crucial role in arrhythmogenesis. Interventions span surgical, pharmacological, and bioelectronic methods. We discuss the range of neuromodulation methods targeting the stellate ganglion, the spinal region, the parasympathetic system, and other promising methods. These include stellate ganglion block

Electrical stimulation of the centromedian thalamic nucleus (ESCM) has been used in cases of difficult to control seizures with multifocal onset in frontal and temporal lobes, as well as in cases of seizures with no evidence of focal onset, such as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. The stimulation program consists of 1 min stimulation on one side, 4 min interval OFF stimulation and 1 min stimulation on the other side, alternating from one side to the other for 24 h, at 60-130 Hz, 2.5-5.0 V, 0.21-0.45 ms. 49 cases have been treated and followed for periods of 6 months to 15 years. Results indicate that

The authors present their first results with urinary bladder stimulation in dogs by using an electronic stimulator and electrodes of their own construction. Neurostimulation was carried out by means of contactless application of electrical rectangular pulses with the voltage ranging from 1 to 10 volts, frequency from 10 to 300 Hz and pulse with 1 ms. Due to the stimulation of the branches of the pelvis plexus an isolated contraction of the bladder detrussor with an increase of intravesical pressure up to 65 cm H2O was observed with subsequent spontaneous voiding. The stimulation of the intact
