In his position as curator of the Cowlishaw collection of historical medical books in the Library of the College, Kenneth Russell prepared the definitive catalogue of the collection. This catalogue is comprehensive and for almost all entries there is an annotation that demonstrates his meticulous attention to detail and the love of the book collection that he managed to secure for the College. Water samples have been extracted from inside (from standpipes) and from outside (from boreholes) of the trenches at the low level radioactive waste disposal site at Drigg in Cumbria, UK. The samples were taken anaerobically from between 8.5 and 10.0 m below the surface using a submersible pump at low flow rates to ensure that the waters in the standpipes and boreholes were maintained at constant levels. A telephone survey was conducted of 100 racing stables, 100 riding schools and 100 competition establishments (8,427 horses in total) to determine what management practices were being applied to horses showing stereotypic behaviour, and to determine the underlying reasons for them by assessing the perceptions and opinions of the people working with the horses. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: There has been a recent shift in the epidemiology of early syphilis in the developed world with sporadic outbreaks on a historic low level of background disease. Here we describe an ongoing outbreak of syphilis in Brighton.
METHODS: Data collected on all patients with a diagnosis of early infectious syphilis at Brighton GUM clinic.
RESULTS: 30 cases of early syphilis were diagnosed over a 25 month period beginning in July 1999. 28 were homosexual or bisexual men, giving a rate of 134 cases per 100 000 homosexual men. The cases reported a median of three sexual contacts

A survey was carried out on the condition of 188 live grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) pups presented for rehabilitation from the coasts of south-west England between 1992 and 1998. The survey was carried out to assess the incidence of malnutrition, hyperthermia, respiratory and gastrointestinal conditions, and also the incidence of traumatic, skin, oral and ocular lesions. The aim of the present study was to identify patients who were at particular risk of violent behaviour, over a period of one month in a psychiatric high dependency unit, and to examine whether particular patients could be identified at admission who would subsequently be violent. UNLABELLED: We report nine cases of severe early pertussis in infants less than 7 weeks of age. Clinical features at this age are atypical and may be confused with more common illnesses such as bronchiolitis. All were very difficult to manage. Ventilation was required for apnoeas in five cases, seizures in two or respiratory failure in two. Pneumonia and meningitis are the most frequent manifestations of Streptococcus pneumoniae infection. Spinal infection is considered to be a rarity. Between 1985 and 1997, 8 patients with spinal infection (vertebral osteomyelitis, 3; spinal epidural abscess, 1; both, 4) due to S. pneumoniae were seen at University Hospital (Nottingham, U.K.).
