OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of weight reduction with 10mg of sibutramine or placebo on blood pressure during 24 hours (ambulatory blood pressure monitoring), on left ventricular mass, and on antihypertensive therapy in 86 obese and hypertensive patients for 6 months.

The neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare complication of antipsychotic therapy. We report on a 65-year-old patient who was treated with haloperidol, diazepam and mirtazapin because of a severe depressive episode with psychotic symptoms. He exhibited most of the signs and symptoms characteristic of NMS, e.g.: hyperthermia, rigidity, elevated creatine phosphokinase, leukocytosis, elevated liver enzymes, reduced consciousness and autonomic nervous system disturbances. A secondary pneumonia was diagnosed 2 days after the onset of the NMS, which might have been due to chest wall rigidity.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic inflammatory disease in the joints. It is one of the leading causes of disability with increasing morbidity, which has become one of the serious clinical issues. Current treatments would only provide temporary relief due to the lack of early diagnosis and effective therapy, and thus the replacement of joints may be needed when the OA deteriorates. Although the intra-articular injection and oral administration of drugs are helpful for OA treatment, they are suffering from systemic toxicity, short retention time in joint, and insufficient bioavailability.
