Studies regarding the influence of body composition parameters as predictors on overall survival (OS) in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) are scarce. OS and progression-free survival (PFS) were retrospectively assessed in 129 patients with MM undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) after a follow-up of 2 years. A computed tomography (CT) based semi-automated assessment of body composition was performed. No statistically significant differences were noted in 2-year OS, PFS, or post-transplant adverse events in the body composition groups of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) (l

Mentally retarded obese in-patients were fed by low-energy diet (4.2-4.6 MJ) for 9 months. During this period, an average of 13 +/- 4.5 kg loss of body mass occurred in men and 16 +/- 2.7 kg in women. Anthropometric measurements were performed before starting the dietotherapy and in the ninth month. Changes of body fat could be followed well when calculated according to BMI. Less reliable results were obtained with skinfold thickness measurements, presumably due to body deformities. Results of clinical laboratory tests, which were carried out before starting the dietotherapy and in the fourth

INTRODUCTION: Dromedary camels robustly withstand dehydration, and the rough desert environment but the adaptation mechanisms are not well understood. One of these mechanisms is that the dromedary camel increases its body temperature to reduce the process of evaporative cooling during the hot weather. Stress in general, has deleterious effects in the body. In this study, we sought to determine the effects of dehydration and rehydration on stress parameters in the dromedary camels and how it pacifies these effects.
METHODS: Nineteen male camels were randomly divided into control, dehydrated an

Evolutionary pressures to protect against food scarcity likely resulted in highly-conserved pathways designed to minimize energy expenditure, one of which involves the minimization of muscle mass; these mechanisms may be counter-productive in a modern world suffering from obesity and sarcopenia. Growth differentiation factor 8 (GDF8)/myostatin, acting via ActRIIA/B receptors, is the best-characterized negative regulator of muscle mass, leading to therapeutic efforts to augment muscle growth by blocking GDF8 or ActRIIA/B. ActRIIA/B blockade approximately doubles the muscle increase of GDF8 bloc

Technological advances in the intensive care of low birth weight (LBW) infants have resulted in major increases in their survival. New challenges in meeting their nutritional needs have emerged. Very low birth (VLBW) weight infants have very little body fat or glycogen reserves at birth, making them susceptible to starvation. If fed enterally, they require at least 120 calories/kg per day for growth. Numerous immaturities in the gastrointestinal tract and liver limit protein digestion, absorption, and metabolism. Several amino acids not considered essential to the older child or adult are esse

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a global metabolic challenge that leads to excessive fat accumulation and adipose tissue dysfunction due to the disruption of the balance between energy intake and consumption. This study focuses on whether Erchen Decoction promotes high-fat diet-induced white fat browning in obese rats through the SP1/SREBP/UCP1 signaling pathway, thereby improving obesity.
METHODS: Male SD rats were fed a high-fat diet to establish an obesity model, and were randomly divided into the High-fat diet (HFD) group, Erchen Decoction low dose, medium dose, high dose groups, and high dose + S

BACKGROUND: To date, anti-obesity agents based on natural products are tested for their potential using lipase inhibition assay through the interference of hydrolysis of fat by lipase resulting in reduced fat absorption without altering the central mechanisms. Previous screening study had indicated strong anti-obesity potential in Eleusine indica (E. indica), but to date, no pharmacologic studies have been reported so far.
OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to investigate the lipid-lowering effects of E. indica using both in vitro and in vivo models.
METHODS: The crude methanolic extract of

BACKGROUND: The SUMMIT trial showed that the long-acting glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist tirzepatide decreased risk of cardiovascular death or worsening heart failure (HF) in patients with obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Women outnumber men with HFpEF, and there are sexual dimorphisms in the relationships between body fat and pathophysiology that could influence response to tirzepatide.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare baseline characteristics and effects of tirzepatide on primary

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a prognostic factor in patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Previous studies have focused on muscle loss, yet comprehensive body composition (BC) alterations in this population remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to delineate BC alterations using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in early-stage NSCLC patients with preoperative sarcopenia, with a specific focus on sex-specific disparities and the identification of independent BC factors associated with sarcopenia.
METHODS: In this case-control study, 460 patients with Stage I-II

Increased weight-bearing load has previously been shown to reduce body weight in obese rodents, primarily by lowering food intake. However, it remains unclear whether increased loading also affects body weight through acute changes in extracellular water. This study aimed to determine whether increased weight-bearing load acutely produces negative sodium and water balances, as indicators of changes in whole-body extracellular sodium and water content. Diet-induced obese (DIO) rats were housed in metabolic cages with free access to hypotonic 0.5% NaCl solution and a low-sodium, high-fat diet. A

BACKGROUND: Ramadan fasting (RF) is a form of intermittent fasting that generally improves body composition and related metabolic profiles. Whether RF exacerbates depressive symptomatology in individuals diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) is undetermined.
METHODS: 100 men, who lived in Bahrain and were between the ages of 18 and 64 years with an established diagnosis of MDD, participated in this 4-week study. Based on preference, participants were assigned to a fasting group (FG, n = 50) and a non-fasting group (NFG, n = 50). The FG engaged in fasting from 03:40 to 18:10 (dawn and

OBJECTIVE: To describe ethnic differences in the relationship between body size and body composition. Knowledge about such differences is important when studying obesity-related complications, such as hypertension and non-insulin dependent diabetes, because it may not be possible to generalize results from one study population to other populations.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SUBJECTS: Four groups of different ethnic identity (2987 Caucasians (Danes), 243 predominantly Melanesian (Torres Strait Islanders from northern Australia), 206 Australian Aborigines and 146 Polynesians (New Zealand

BACKGROUND: Liberation from invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) is a central therapeutic objective in acute respiratory failure (ARF). While lung-protective ventilation strategies and diaphragm function have received considerable attention as determinants of liberation success, the prognostic role of extrapulmonary thoracic tissue composition remains poorly defined. We examined whether chest computed tomography (CT)-derived thoracic skeletal muscle mass (TMM), subcutaneous fat mass (SFM), and their ratio (muscle-fat ratio: MFR) are associated with IMV outcomes in ARF.
METHODS: This secondar

Fatty acid esters of glycidol (glycidyl esters) are heat-induced food contaminants predominantly formed during industrial deodorization of vegetable oils and fats. After consumption, the esters are digested in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to a systemic exposure to the reactive epoxide glycidol. The compound is carcinogenic, genotoxic and teratogenic in rodents, and rated as probably carcinogenic to humans (IARC group 2A). Assessment of exposure from occurrence and consumption data is difficult, as lots of different foods containing refined oils and fats may contribute to human exposure.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease that is characterized by neurocutaneous changes with multisystem involvement. A previous study with adults with NF1 revealed that changes in total energy expenditure were related to food consumption and body composition. Resting energy expenditure (REE), a measure of energy that the body expends to maintain vital functions, has not been assessed in NF1 populations. This study aimed to assess REE in individuals with NF1 using indirect calorimetry (IC) and evaluate its correlation with body composition and

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has been used to investigate the body compositions and predict functional outcomes in patients with stroke, while the role of BIA to predict motor function or recovery in stroke has not been clarified. This study aimed to investigate relationship between body composition measured by BIA and upper limb motor function and recovery. Body compositions (soft tissue lean mass, phase angle, body fat mass and body water) of fifty patients who are admitted to the stroke rehabilitation unit were segmentally analyzed via BIA. The motor recovery of upper extremity (U
