Frontal meningioma incidentally detected in the routine preoperative assessment of tongue cancer: a case report and literature review.

Recent advances in diagnostic tools, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have provided clinicians with the opportunity to detect asymptomatic meningiomas. This report describes a case of frontal convexity meningioma detected incidentally at MRI during the preoperative assessment of tongue cancer. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this case report is the first regarding the successful treatment of tongue cancer in a patient with incidental meningioma. The incidence, perioperative management, and various imaging tests to detect meningiomas are discussed, with a

In vivo imaging of the 18-kDa translocator protein (TSPO) with [18F]FEDAA1106 and PET does not show increased binding in Alzheimer's disease patients.

PURPOSE: Imaging the 18-kDa translocator protein (TSPO) is considered a potential tool for in vivo evaluation of microglial activation and neuroinflammation in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). ((R)-1-(2-chlorophenyl)-N-[(11)C]-methyl-N-(1-methylpropyl)-3-isoquinoline caboxamide ([(11)C]-(R)-PK11195) has been widely used for PET imaging of TSPO and, despite its low specific-to-nondisplaceable binding ratio, increased TSPO binding has been shown in AD patients. The high-affinity radioligand N-(5-fluoro-2-phenoxyphenyl)-N-(2-[(18)F]fluoroethyl-5-methoxybenzyl)acetamide ([(18)F]FEDAA1

Glucose transporter-1 distribution in fibrotic lung disease: association with [¹⁸F]-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose-PET scan uptake, inflammation, and neovascularization.

BACKGROUND: [¹⁸F]-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG)-PET scan uptake is increased in areas of fibrosis and honeycombing in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Glucose transporter-1 (Glut-1) is known to be the main transporter for FDG. There is a paucity of data regarding the distribution of Glut-1 and the cells responsible for FDG binding in fibrotic lung diseases. METHODS: We applied immunofluorescence to localize Glut-1 in normal, IPF, and Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) pulmonary fibrosis lung tissue specimens as well as an array of 19 different lung neoplasms. In addition, we in

(18)F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography findings are different between invasive and noninvasive pulmonary aspergillosis.

OBJECTIVE: Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality especially in immunocompromised patients, and extensive work has been done in the field of diagnostic imaging. The purpose of our study was to evaluate functional metabolic image findings of F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in the patients with invasive and noninvasive forms of pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA and NIPA, respectively). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 24 consecutive patients who had pulmonary aspergillosis among the pat

Disseminated osteomyelitis or bone metastases of breast cancer: (18)F-FDG-PET/CT helps unravel an unusual presentation.

We present a case wherein striking (18)F-FDG-PET/CT findings initially considered consistent with recurrent disseminated skeletal metastases of breast cancer were later identified as an unusual presentation of disseminated chronic pyogenic osteomyelitis with Staphylococcus aureus and warneri identified on microbiological culture. A 76-year-old female with previous history of breast cancer presented with a 6-month history of pyrexia, myalgia and weight loss. Besides neutrophilia and elevated C-reactive protein, other blood indices, cultures and conventional imaging failed to identify the cause

Value of true whole-body FDG-PET/CT scanning protocol in oncology: optimization of its use based on primary diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: No standardized field of view (FOV) currently exists for whole-body (WB) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). Limited WB PET/CT FOV can exclude portions of the head, upper, and lower extremities, because there is little perceived clinical benefit to be gained from imaging these areas. PURPOSE: To determine how often utilizing WB PET/CT changes the clinical stage and management compared to each of the limited WB FOVs used for PET/CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified 556 oncologic patients (804 PET/CT studies) who underwent staging or restag

Diagnostic value of fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography for the detection of metastases in non-small-cell lung cancer patients.

In the recent years, fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) has emerged as a new modality for staging non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the diagnostic value of (18)F-FDG PET/CT in detecting metastatic lesions in NSCLC patients. Meta-analysis methods were used to pool sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likehood ratios, diagnostic odd ratios and to construct a summary receiver-operating characteristic curve. Data from included studies were pooled to compare the diag

Evaluation of Wegener's granulomatosis using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a relatively rare disease characterized by granulomatous necrotizing vasculitis that primarily involves small- and medium-sized vessels. Systemic findings observed on (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) have not been well reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the FDG PET/CT imaging in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with WG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen FDG PET/CT images obtained for 8 patients (2 men and 6 women) with WG were retrospectively analyzed. Of these, 6 were p

Combination of docetaxel and cetuximab for penile cancer: a case report and literature review.

Guidelines on the treatment of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the penis are limited to a few prospective trials. Cisplatin-based regimens represent the standard of treatment with promising activity of taxanes. Recently, epidermal growth factor receptor overexpression has been shown in these patients. We treated an elderly man with a docetaxel-cetuximab combination after failure of the cisplatin regimen. We observed a necrosis of the inguinal lymph nodes and a reduction of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake at PET/CT scan. Only mild mucositis and skin toxicity had been detected. Our case re

Growth of a solitary pulmonary nodule after 6years diagnosed as oncocytic carcinoid tumour with a high 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) uptake in positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT).

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary carcinoid tumour is low-grade neuroendocrine malignancy that is seen 1%-2% of all lung neoplasms. Oncocytic carcinoid type is a rarely seen variant of pulmonary carcinoids. As carcinoid tumours have hypometabolic activity, they usually have lower 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) uptake than expected for lung carcinoma on positron emission tomography (PET). CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old non-smoking man had a stable solitary pulmonary nodule followed for 6years; the tumour remained the same size (1.5×2.4cm) during this period. The patient was admitted to the hospital with co

BCG-induced granulomatous prostatitis--an incidental finding on FDG PET-CT.

We present a case of granulomatous prostatitis that presented in a rare way as an incidentally discovered focus of increased FDG activity within the prostate on PET-CT in a patient who had previously undergone intravesical bacille Calmette-Guérin treatment for bladder cancer. FDG uptake is commonly discovered in organs distant from the region of primary interest on PET-CT and so it is important to be aware of the potential causes of this.

Pulmonary BALT lymphoma successfully treated with eight cycles weekly rituximab: report of first case and F-18 FDG PET/CT images.

Extra marginal-zone lymphomas of the lung is a very rare tumor and it originates from bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue. A 68-yr-old woman presented with productive cough and dyspnea. A thorax computed tomography scan showed a 9 × 10 cm in size mass in the left lung and pleural effusion in the lower lobe of left lung. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) revealed intense uptake foci at the upper and middle sites of left lung and slight uptake foci at the mediastinal lymph nodes which showed malignant involvement. After bronchoscopic biopsy, the diagnosis of pulmonary br

[Interest of FDG-PET for lung cancer radiotherapy].

The recent advances in medical imaging have profoundly altered the radiotherapy of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). A meta-analysis has confirmed the superiority of FDG PET-CT over CT for initial staging. FDG PET-CT improves the reproducibility of target volume delineation, especially close to the mediastinum or in the presence of atelectasia. Although not formally validated by a randomized trial, the reduction of the mediastinal target volume, by restricting the irradiation to FDG-avid nodes, is widely accepted. The optimal method of delineation still remains to be defined. The role of FD

Imaging of atherosclerosis.

It is now well recognized that the atherosclerotic plaques responsible for thrombus formation are not necessarily those that impinge most on the lumen of the vessel. Nevertheless, clinical investigations for atherosclerosis still focus on quantifying the degree of stenosis caused by plaques. Many of the features associated with a high-risk plaque, including a thin fibrous cap, large necrotic core, macrophage infiltration, neovascularization, and intraplaque hemorrhage, can now be probed by novel imaging techniques. Each technique has its own strengths and drawbacks. In this article, we review

Primary gastric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with orbital involvement: diagnostic usefulness of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

A 38-year-old man presented to our hospital with abdominal pain and melena. Gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a large gastric ulcer, and the pathological diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) was made based on immunohistochemical findings. Left diplopia developed soon after commencement of chemotherapy. Despite normal findings from head MRI, orbital involvement in DLBCL was detected with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). The patient was treated with salvage chemotherapy with success. Treatment analysis using FDG-PET for patients with DLBCL, especiall

Role of FDG-PET/CT in follow-up of patients treated with resective gastric surgery for tumour.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric cancer has a poor prognosis and a high rate of recurrences after surgery. The optimal method for assessing early recurrences is not defined: conventional imaging (ultrasonography, CT and MRI) have difficulty in detecting them, because they don't give information regarding metabolic features or tumor response to chemotherapy. Actually 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission (18FDG-PET) has several indications for the primary staging and the follow-up of colon-rectal, lung, breast, neck cancers and lymphoma, but its clinical role in gastric cancer is not assessed.
