We report measurements of the anisotropic optical response of an atomic medium confined in submicron-thick vapor cells using polarization spectroscopy. The technique enables systematic characterization of anisotropy as a function of cell thickness, temperature, and probe intensity. Owing to the extremely low optical density of these submicron cells, the medium remains optically transparent even at temperatures up to 250 °C, allowing operation far beyond the conventional thermal limits of vapor-cell spectroscopy. Outbreaks of a canine distemper-like acute disease brought high mortalities to seal populations in north-west Europe and Lake Baikal from late 1987 to 1988. Causes of sudden cardiac deaths have been widely reported with limited data focused specifically on myocarditis. A retrospective review of cases from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), State of Maryland yielded a total of 103 sudden unexpected deaths (SUDs) due to myocarditis (0.17% of all SUDs and 0.70% of autopsied SUDs) from 2005 through 2014.
