The pattern of antibiotic resistance amongst gram-negative bacteria (GNB) in paediatric units, which have heavy empirical usage of broad-spectrum antibiotics, was studied prospectively over a 6-month period. Routine procedures used to isolate Haemophilus ducreyi in a busy laboratory are reported. Identification was based on colony morphology and nutritional and biochemical properties of 120 fresh isolates of H. ducreyi.
