Health-related job loss: findings from a community-based survey.

AIMS: To explore the frequency, nature, determinants and outcome of health-related job loss (HRJL) in men sampled from the general population of three rural areas. METHODS: Data on lifetime occupational history, including any HRJL, were obtained as part of a postal survey of men aged 24-70 years in three rural areas of England and Wales. Incidence rates were calculated for first health-related loss of a job that had been held for >or=1 year. Associations with risk factors were examined by Poisson regression, and by application of conditional logistic regression in a nested case-control study.

A cross-sectional study addressing the importance of work and other everyday activities for well-being among people with mental illness: does additional vulnerability matter?

BACKGROUND: Work and other everyday activities are beneficial for well-being among people with mental illness, but poor circumstances can create detrimental effects, possibly aggravated by additional vulnerabilities linked with their mental illness. This study aimed to investigate how activity factors were related to well-being and functioning among three vulnerable groups using outpatient mental health care - young people with psychosis, people with a history of substance use disorder (SUD), and immigrants with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - while controlling for vulnerability group,

Long-term whiplash-associated disorders, sickness absence, and disability pension following rear-end car crashes and associations with whiplash protection systems: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) are common injuries from car crashes, with a significant proportion leading to permanent medical impairment (PMI), especially among women and in rear-end impacts. While previous research has shown mixed results regarding work incapacity following WAD, severe cases may lead to long-term health and functional consequences. This study aimed to examine the occurrence of long-term WAD – based on insurance compensation, future PMI, and work incapacity (sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP)) among front seat occupants in rear-end crashes, an

Seroprotection Against Hepatitis B Virus Among Healthcare Workers in a Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital in Uttarakhand.

Introduction Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a significant occupational health hazard among healthcare workers (HCWs) due to frequent exposure to blood and body fluids. Although hepatitis B vaccination provides effective protection, post-vaccination antibody levels may decline over time, leading to inadequate seroprotection even in fully vaccinated individuals. Estimation of hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBsAb) titres serves as an indirect marker of immunity and helps identify hypo-responders and non-responders who remain at risk of infection. Aims and objectives The present study ai

Sleep Phenotype, Shift-Related Occupation, and Coronary Plaque Complexity in Young Adults: Association with CT-Derived Functional Ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disruption and irregular work schedules are increasingly recognized as behavioral risk factors for premature cardiovascular disease. Their associations with coronary plaque complexity and CT-derived functional ischemia in young adults remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of multidimensional sleep phenotype, shift-related occupation, and coronary plaque complexity as well as CT-derived functional ischemia in adults aged ≤40 years, adjusting for clinical confounders. METHODS: This retrospective study included 3,983 young adults who underwent coronar

[The endemic nature of chronic kidney disease].

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been increasingly recognized as a major global health burden, prompting the WHO and UN in 2025 to call for strengthened prevention, early detection, and improved care. CKD accounted for approximately 1.5 million deaths in 2023, with age standardized mortality continuing to rise. Metabolic risk factors, especially hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, are the primary drivers of CKD burden in adults, while environmental and occupational exposures play an additional role in low resource settings. Congenital anomalies, hereditary nephropathies, and early life kidney

Acute Lung Injury Caused by Mugwort Steaming.

Mugwort steaming is a traditional health practice with reported biological benefits, but its potential adverse effects on lung health remain unexplored. We report a case of a 48-year-old Japanese female who developed recurrent respiratory symptoms and abnormal lung shadows following occupational exposure to mugwort steaming. Initial diagnosis suggested nonfibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis. However, transbronchial lung cryobiopsy revealed findings consistent with acute lung injury (ALI). Multi-disciplinary discussion led to a final diagnosis of ALI caused by mugwort steaming. The patient's

Milker's nodules: classic histological findings.

Milker's nodule is an occupational dermatovirose caused by Parapoxvirus, which is self-limited and, due to the lack of information of health professionals, may lead to underdiagnosis. We present two cases with exuberant manifestations and classic histopathologic findings. Case 1: Male, 19 years of age, milker, presented nodules and blisters on his palm for 15 days. Case 2: Male, 33 years of age, administrative assistant, presented erythematous nodules on his palms with lymphangitis for 5 days. He had milked a cow one week before the onset of the lesions. In both cases, the histopathology was r

Measuring job quality: a study with bus drivers.

There is growing interest in the contribution which job design can make to worker health; also a desire to better understand the multidimensional notion of 'job quality' and to develop approaches to measuring this. This paper reviews concepts of 'job quality' and 'good jobs' and examines these issues in the work of bus drivers, an occupational group commonly reported as having poor health and poor working conditions. The DGB-Index (Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund Good Work Index), a tool used recently in Germany for measuring job quality, was translated and administered to a sample of UK bus drive

Vaccination policies for healthcare workers in Europe.

Health-care workers (HCWs) are at increased risk for acquisition of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) and vaccination is justified in order to protect them from occupational exposure and to prevent the spread of VPDs that pose a threat to susceptible patients. Review of European vaccination policies for HCWs revealed significant differences between countries in terms of recommended vaccines, implementation frame (mandatory or recommendation), target HCW groups and health-care settings. Further, the few published studies available identified indicate significant immunity gaps among HCWs again

Comparison of state occupation, entry, exit and waiting times in two or more groups based on current status data in a multistate model.

We propose mean absolute distance-based nonparametric bootstrap tests comparing the occupation probabilities, entry, exit and waiting times in a given state in two or more groups in a multistate model. The state occupied is determined at a single inspection time for each individual. Nonparametric monotonic regression and smoothing are used to uniquely define the various marginal estimators for each group which are then compared via a mean absolute distance criterion. A detailed simulation study shows that the proposed tests all have close to nominal size and reasonable power. An illustrative a

Conversion to use of digital chest images for surveillance of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (black lung).

To protect the health of active U.S. underground coal miners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has a mandate to carry out surveillance for coal workers' pneumoconiosis, commonly known as Black Lung (PHS 2001). This is accomplished by reviewing chest x-ray films obtained from miners at approximately 5-year intervals in approved x-ray acquisition facilities around the country. Currently, digital chest images are not accepted. Because most chest x-rays are now obtained in digital format, NIOSH is redesigning the surveillance program to accept and manage digital x-

Patients' health beliefs and adaptation to carpal tunnel syndrome based on duration of symptomatic presentation.

The purpose of this paper was to examine the health beliefs and adaptation of patients receiving hand therapy treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). A maximum variation sample of five patients referred for treatment of CTS was used to provide a diverse group of patients with varied backgrounds of age, gender, race, and occupation. Qualitative interviews based on the Health Beliefs model were conducted at the initial evaluation. Adaptive comments were recorded throughout the process. A grounded theory method was used to code and analyze the information gathered. Four themes emerged as to w

Functional health status of patients with chronic inflammatory neuropathies.

The functioning of 12 patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and 18 patients with multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) was evaluated to obtain health profiles and appropriate clinimetric instruments. Assessment was made in a cross-sectional study by means of a performance-based body function test (hand-held dynamometry), two performance-based activity tests (10-m walk test and Berg balance scale), a self-reported activity test (Canadian Occupational Performance Measure), and a self-reported functioning test (sickness impact profile 68). In both patient groups, CIDP

Bioterrorism-related anthrax: international response by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

After reports of the intentional release of Bacillus anthracis in the United States, epidemiologists, laboratorians, and clinicians around the world were called upon to respond to widespread political and public concerns. To respond to inquiries from other countries regarding anthrax and bioterrorism, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established an international team in its Emergency Operations Center. From October 12, 2001, to January 2, 2002, this team received 130 requests from 70 countries and 2 territories. Requests originated from ministries of health, international organiz

An integrated system of community services for the rehabilitation of chronic psychiatric patients in Shenyang, China.

The evolution of the Zhengyang Community Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre described in this paper proves that community-based mental health services initiated and developed by enthusiastic and committed community members can be successful in the Chinese setting. The most important step is to utilise community resources to secure a stable source of income, preferably by establishing a profitable welfare enterprise that can both finance the provision of other services and provide work for mentally ill clients who cannot obtain regular employment. The ultimate goal is to reintroduce as many cl

Getting the message to the farmer.

The farm worker has been a difficult person to reach with information on the health hazards present in his/her work environment, even though the typical farm is a potentially dangerous place to work. The University of Minnesota Agricultural Extension Service has used OSHA 'New Directions' funding to develop a program specifically designed to increase the farmers' awareness of occupational health and safety hazards. The information has been packaged in units which can be used effectively by those people such as county agents, Vo-Ag teachers, and chemical dealers who have regular contact with th
