Digital technology for monitoring adherence to inhaled therapies in people with cystic fibrosis.

RATIONALE: Improved understanding and treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) has led to longer life expectancy, which is accompanied by an increasingly complex regimen of treatments. Suboptimal adherence to the treatment plan, in the context of respiratory disease, is associated with poorer health outcomes. With digital technology being more accessible, it can be used to monitor adherence to inhaled therapies via chipped nebulisers, mobile phone applications and web-based platforms. This technology can allow monitoring of adherence, as well as clinical outcomes, and allow feedback to both the perso

Conquering the intolerable burden of malaria: what's new, what's needed: a summary.

Each year, up to three million deaths due to malaria and close to five billion episodes of clinical illness possibly meriting antimalarial therapy occur throughout the world, with Africa having more than 90% of this burden. Almost 3% of disability adjusted life years are due to malaria mortality globally, 10% in Africa. New information is presented in this supplement on malaria-related perinatal mortality, occurrence of human immunodeficiency virus in pregnancy, undernutrition, and neurologic, cognitive, and developmental sequelae. The entomologic determinants of transmission and uses of model

Usability and Workflow Integration of a Machine Learning-Derived Neonatal Risk Predictor in Kenyan Neonatal Units: Multisite User-Centered Pilot Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality remains a leading contributor to under-5 deaths globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While machine learning (ML)-based risk prediction models show promise for identifying high-risk neonates, published evidence describing the real-world usability and practical implementation of ML-derived neonatal risk prediction tools within routine clinical workflows in LMIC neonatal units remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the usability, user experience, and perceived clinical utility of a paper-based neonatal risk predictor

The experience of pregnancy associated osteoporosis: An international survey with implications for midwifery care.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy associated osteoporosis (PAO) is a rare and complex condition. Its etiology is unclear, but possible predisposing factors include osteoporosis in a first degree relative, low body mass index, celiac or other malabsorption disorders, poor nutrition, low vitamin D and calcium intake, long-term use of medications associated with bone loss, physical inactivity, and prolonged amenorrhea. There is no standard for diagnosis or treatment. Diagnosis is typically made following reports of severe pain and imaging establishing the presence of fractures in vertebrae, pelvic structur

The 2026 Bundibugyo Ebola Outbreak: A Warning for Global Preparedness for Future Epidemics.

Dear Editor, The 2026 Bundibugyo Ebolavirus (BDBV) outbreak has once again demonstrated that the threat of emerging diseases remains a major global health challenge. The outbreak, first detected in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and spread to Uganda, is not only a regional crisis but also a test of the world's preparedness for pathogens with epidemic potential. Unlike Zaire Ebolavirus (EBOV), which has benefited from effective vaccines and treatments in recent years, BDBV still lacks a licensed vaccine or specific treatment[1]. As of June 6, a total of 515 laboratory-confirmed cases an

A Motivational Interviewing Intervention by Pharmacy Students to Improve Medication Adherence.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with comorbid hypertension (HTN) are at a higher risk of developing microvascular and macrovascular DM complications. Through guideline-driven recommendations, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are highly recommended for these patients. Unfortunately, medication adherence to these products, though crucial to achieving therapeutic benefit, is frequently suboptimal. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered collaborative communication style that is used to strengthen internal motivat

Lead contamination in Uruguay: the "La Teja" neighborhood case.

Lead, ubiquitous in the environment as a result of mining and industrialization, is found as a contaminant in humans although it has no known physiological function there. Lead-exposed children are known to be the population with the highest potential health risks. The recommended biomarker to assess environmental lead exposure in animals is lead level in blood. Before 2001, the Department of Toxicology and Environmental Hygiene was the only team to produce human monitoring data on Uruguayan populations (Manay 2001a,b; Mañay et al. 1999). Lead pollution in Uruguay first received official atten

Assessing parent interaction with deaf infants: A quantitative survey of UK professional practice.

BACKGROUND: Between 90% and 95% of deaf children are born to hearing parents who often need support with how to adapt their communication. Parent-child interaction (PCI) is an important predictor of deaf children's future language development. It is therefore necessary for professionals to assess parents' strengths and needs to identify areas for intervention. Qualified teachers of the deaf (QToDs), speech and language therapists (SLTs), psychologists, and national deaf child and adolescent mental health (NDCAMHS) professionals regularly support families with deaf children. With no current evi

[A Case of Simultaneous Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Diagnosis with Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever].

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a zoonotic disease that can be presented with fever, fatigue, generalized joint/body pain, diarrhea and bleeding in various parts of the body. The risk of developing a severe fatal disease in humans, the possibility of being infected with aerosols and the risk of being used as a biological weapon make the disease still an important health problem all over the world as there is no a specific treatment and vaccine that has proven effective againt the virus today. The pathogenesis of the disease is not known, but vascular endothelial damage is prominent.

Trajectory changes in psychosocial adaptation levels of patients after implantation of cardiac implantable electronic devices and development of the intervention programme: a mixed-methods research protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The implantation of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has become an important treatment for various types of arrhythmias and severe heart failure, effectively improving patient prognosis and increasing survival rates. However, patients after CIED implantation need to go through a process of coexisting with and adapting to the internal electronic device. This may result in limitations in daily activities, discomfort and lifestyle changes, which can easily lead to negative emotions and psychosocial maladjustment in the patients, seriously affecting their physical and m
