Severely burned patients often show various degrees of organ failures, and when several vital organs are involved mortality becomes extremely high. A study was undertaken to elucidate the aetiology and clinical significance of multiple organ failure (MOF) in burned patients. Left atrial dissection is an exceedingly rare complication of cardiac surgery, with an incidence of 0.16%-0.84%. We report the first case of interatrial dissection and hematoma in association with the MitraClip procedure. Hemodynamically stable patients can be managed conservatively, with echocardiographic imaging, often with resolution of the dissection over the course of weeks. Our patient remained hemodynamically stable and asymptomatic post operation; at 1-month follow-up, echocardiogram showed resolution of the interatrial septal dissection.

The authors report a case of left ventricular perforation and cardiac tamponade in a patient undergoing endovascular aortic and mesenteric stent grafting. During the procedure, the anesthetist noticed a sudden increase in central venous pressure and a decrease in blood pressure. Cardiac tamponade was suspected and confirmed by transesophageal echocardiography. Pericardiotomy resulted only in temporary stabilization. Emergency sternotomy revealed left ventricular perforation. Both anesthetists and radiologists have to be aware of such rare but severe complications of interventional procedures.

Cardiac septal defects are known complications to blunt chest trauma. The incidence of a traumatic isolated atrial septal defect is unknown and the concurrent occurrence of nonlethal ventricular and atrial septal defects has not been reported. A healthy male sustained violent blunt chest trauma resulting in traumatic cardiac septal disruption in the atrium and ventricle.
