Reactive Oxygen Species-Responsive Glycocalyx-Mimetic Hydrogel-Engineered Bioprosthetic Valves with Integrated Anticoagulant, Anti-Inflammatory, and Endothelialization Properties.

The rise of transcatheter valve therapy has sharply expanded the worldwide need for bioprosthetic heart valves (BHVs). However, several persistent challenges remain unresolved, including suboptimal cytocompatibility, thrombogenicity, and adverse immune responses. Herein, a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive glycocalyx-mimetic hydrogel-engineered BHV (RA/Hep-GAP) with integrated anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory properties was constructed. Thiolated glutaraldehyde cross-linked pericardium was prepared by multicomponent co-cross-linking, followed by the construction of a glycocalyx-like

Microfluidic device for islet conformal coating with a polyethylene glycol-based hydrogel: innovating cell immunoprotection strategies in type 1 diabetes.

Microencapsulation of therapeutic cell clusters within immunoprotective hydrogels is a key strategy in endocrine, hepatic, neural, and musculoskeletal regenerative medicine. Conformal hydrogel coating (CC) of pancreatic islets represents a promising approach for β cell replacement in type 1 diabetes (T1D), offering immunoprotection to prevent rejection. However, current CC techniques are limited by poor scalability, complex workflows, and high reagent use. Here, we present a flow-focusing soft lithographic microfluidic platform that enables thin polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based CC around insuli…

Injectable gallic acid-engineered zwitterionic hydrogel for preventing postoperative adhesions in thyroid surgery through modulating oxidative stress and inflammation.

Postoperative adhesions after thyroid surgery pose significant clinical challenges, leading to dysphagia and reoperation risks. Current anti-adhesion barriers are limited by poor anatomical conformity of membranes, short retention time of gels, and insufficient ability to regulate the microenvironment involved in adhesion formation. To address this issue, an injectable SAG adhesive hydrogel is developed by integrating gallic acid (for oxidation regulation) and a zwitterionic polymer (for anti-fouling), to create a stable barrier that physically separates wounds while modulating the pathologica

Multifunctional Co-FeS2 nanozyme-hydrogel composite promotes diabetic wound healing by synergistic antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammation therapy.

Diabetic wounds are refractory and recurrent chronic conditions, characterized by insufficient tissue nutrition, persistent infection, and immune dysregulation. These challenges underscore the need for innovative, multifunctional wound dressings. In this study, we synthesized cobalt-doped FeS₂ (Co-FeS₂) nanozymes that exhibit superior peroxidase (POD)-like and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities, enhanced photothermal performance, and greater antioxidant capacity compared to Fe₃O₄ and FeS₂. The Co-FeS₂ nanozyme was encapsulated together with H₂O₂ in a hydrogel matrix composed of polyvin

Enhanced reactive oxygen species generation using photonic platforms containing polyethylene glycol hydrogel doped with a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy.

This work presents the design and analysis of a symmetric one-dimensional photonic crystal incorporating a polyethylene glycol hydrogel doped with porphyrin derivatives (TBPP, TMPP, TPP, TCPP, and TAPP) for enhancing reactive oxygen species generation in photodynamic therapy. The photonic structure is engineered such that the defect resonance mode overlaps the absorption Q-band of porphyrins. Simulation results show that increasing the intrinsic refractive index of porphyrin systematically red-shifts the resonance wavelength from 715.27 nm (TBPP) to 716.58 nm (TAPP). Among all derivatives, TCP

GelMA/HA-NB hydrogel encapsulating adipose-derived chondrogenic exosomes enhances enthesis regeneration in chronic rotator cuff tears.

Chronic rotator cuff tears (RCTs) often lead to poor surgical outcomes, requiring innovative therapies. This study explores the potential of exosomes from chondrogenic stem/progenitor cells (CSPCs), encapsulated in a GelMA/HA-NB hydrogel, to improve rotator cuff healing. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) were isolated and sorted to obtain CSPCs, from which exosomes (sub-Exos) were extracted and characterized. Unsorted ASCs exosomes (un-Exos) were also isolated for comparison. The hydrogel-exosome system was evaluated for biocompatibility, chondrogenic differentiation, and sustained release in

Failure Rate, Time to Failure, and Associated Risk Factors: Polyacrylamide Hydrogel Injection for the Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence in a Large Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) imposes a high healthcare burden and significantly affects quality of life and daily functioning. While midurethral slings remain the standard surgical treatment, periurethral bulking with polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAHG) is increasingly utilized. Existing studies focus on PAHG success, and have been limited by small sample sizes and short follow-up. This study aimed to assess PAHG failure risk, time to failure, and the likelihood of repeat injections, while identifying associated risk factors. HYPOTHESIS: Periurethral injection with PAHG for SUI

Efficient ribavirin removal from medical wastewater by microalgae-centric: Microbial biological action and application of double-layer network hydrogel.

Pharmaceutical contaminants (PCs) have emerged as a critical class of emerging pollutants in recent decades. Ribavirin (RBV), a broad-spectrum synthetic nucleoside antiviral targeting both RNA and DNA viruses, served as an important therapeutic option for epidemic viral infection. This study employed two distinct freshwater microalgae strains, Scenedesmus sp. SI-35 and Chlorella sp. SI-55, for RBV remediation, coupled with the development of a sustainable microalgae-immobilized hydrogel system with translational potential. The results demonstrated complete RBV removal within 18 days, with no s

A bio-based Janus hydrogel from cellulose and lignin with bilayer structure and asymmetric adhesion for accurate and sensitive human motion monitoring.

Janus hydrogels for human motion monitoring are thriving due to their conductivity, flexibility, anisotropy and self-adhesion, etc. However, most of them face challenges such as complex processes, interlayer detachment, and surface contamination, which degrade their sensing accuracy and sensitivity. Hence, this study proposes a facile strategy using the cellulose and lignin as building blocks to construct a Janus hydrogel for accurate and sensitive sensing. The proposed process involves sequential pouring and in-situ thermal-induced polymerization. Initially, the cellulose dissolved in ZnCl2 s…

A ROS-Scavenging and Conductive Hydrogel-Based Cardiac Patch with Controlled Release of Edaravone for Myocardial Infarction Treatment Assisted by Electrical Stimulation.

The severity and complexity of cardiovascular disease, especially myocardial infarction (MI), the leading global cause of death, cannot be overlooked. MI disrupts electrical conduction, causes cardiomyocyte damage, and generates an excessive number of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, repairing myocardial electrical integrity and scavenging ROS are two key issues in MI treatment. In this work, we designed and synthesized an MPSHU@EDR hydrogel that exhibits excellent mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, ROS-scavenging activity, antioxidant activity, and biocompatibility.
