Selective Hydrodeoxygenation of Aromatics to Cyclohexanols over Ru Single Atoms Supported on CeO2.

Cyclohexanols are widely used chemicals, which are mainly produced by oxidation of fossil feedstocks. Selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin derivatives has great potential for producing these chemicals but is challenging to obtain high yields. Here, we report that CeO2-supported Ru single-atom catalysts (SACs) enabled the hydrogenation of the benzene ring and catalyzed etheric C-O(R) bond cleavage without changing the C-O(H) bond, which could afford 99.9% yields of cyclohexanols. As far as we know, this is the first to report that SACs catalyze hydrogenation of the aromatic ring. The reaction…

Cooperative Catalysis of an Alcohol Dehydrogenase and Rhodium-Modified Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica.

The combined use of a metal-complex catalyst and an enzyme is attractive, but typically results in mutual inactivation. A rhodium (Rh) complex immobilized in a bipyridine-based periodic mesoporous organosilica (BPy-PMO) shows high catalytic activity during transfer hydrogenation, even in the presence of bovine serum albumin (BSA), while a homogeneous Rh complex exhibits reduced activity due to direct interaction with BSA. The use of a smaller protein or an amino acid revealed a clear size-sieving effect of the BPy-PMO that protected the Rh catalyst from direct interactions. A combination of Rh…

Efficient enantioselective synthesis of condensed and aromatic-ring-substituted tyrosine derivatives.

An efficient access to both condensed and conjugated tyrosine analogues of high enantiomeric purity is described. Novel ring-substituted tyrosines were synthesized by Suzuki cross couplings of appropriately protected l-3-iodotyrosine with a series of activated and deactivated boronic acid derivatives to achieve the target compounds in high yields. d- and l-4-hydroxy-1-naphthylalanines were readily prepared from the corresponding alpha-enamide in two different approaches, by asymmetric hydrogenation as well as by unselective hydrogenation and enzymatic resolution of the racemic mixture.

Allosteric Switching-Triggered Electrocatalyst Recruitment Enables Indicator-Free, Milliampere-Level Hydrogen Evolution Readout for MicroRNA-21 Detection.

Electrochemical nucleic acid biosensors typically rely on redox labels or exogenous mediators to generate analytical signals, which can complicate assay design and constrain signal magnitude. Herein, we report an enzyme-free and indicator-free electrochemical biosensor for microRNA-21 based on allosteric switching-triggered electrocatalyst recruitment and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) readout. The sensing interface comprises a hairpin probe DNA that undergoes target-induced allosteric switching upon hybridization with microRNA-21, thereby exposing a streptavidin-binding domain for recruitm

Photocatalytic Production of over 2 wt % Hydrogen Peroxide Solution via Potassium-Ion Regulation of Nitrogen-Rich Carbon Nitride.

Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation represents a green pathway to produce H2O2, but currently its application is significantly limited by the low accumulated H2O2 concentration. Due to the metastable nature of H2O2, an ideal photocatalyst should possess excellent optoelectronic properties for fast H2O2 generation and a suitable surface to prevent H2O2 decomposition by photogenerated charge carriers. In this work, we have developed an efficient photocatalyst based on nitrogen-rich carbon nitride (C3N5). Potassium ion (K+) was applied to modify the electronic structure and surface

DLP 3D-Printed High-Performance Polymers with Photothermal Dual-Curing Resin Containing Hydrogen Bonds and Reversible Covalent Bonds.

Photocuring 3D printing faces challenges in achieving high mechanical strength and thermal stability primarily due to the low conversion degree of photopolymerization. This study presents a molecular design strategy to develop a high-performance, photothermal dual-curing resin for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. A polyurethane acrylate containing multiple hydrogen bonds and dynamic hindered urea bonds is synthesized and compounded with an acrylate-modified epoxy monomer, a reactive diluent, and a latent hindered urea curing agent to construct the hybrid system. During the photocuri

Hydrogen-bond rearrangement and Raman spectral responses of glycerol-water clusters under continuum dielectric environments: A DFT and IRI analysis.

The structural and vibrational responses of glycerol-water clusters are closely associated with their local hydrogen-bonding environments. In this work, glycerol-water clusters with 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 cluster compositions were investigated using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311 + G(d,p) level combined with the integral equation formalism polarizable continuum model (IEFPCM). Four continuum dielectric environments with ε = 24.852, 32.613, 35.688, and 46.826 were considered while keeping the explicit glycerol-water compositions unchanged. Optimized structural parameters, simulated Ram

Ce4+-Triggered Stable Pyrene Radical Cation Formation in a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Enabling on-Site Dual-Mode Sensing.

The rapid, on-site detection of environmentally relevant Ce4+ ions remains challenging due to limitations in conventional analytical methods. Herein, we report a pyrene-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (Py-HOF) that enables highly sensitive and selective dual-mode (colorimetric and fluorometric) visual detection of Ce4+. The sensing mechanism exploits Ce4+ as a potent one-electron oxidant to trigger the formation of stable pyrene cation radicals (Py•+) within the structurally ordered HOF. Crucially, the rigid, columnar π-stacked architecture of Py-HOF effectively stabilizes the Py•+ spe

Optimization of lens size and ion source parameters for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-based metabolomics using hydrogen as a carrier gas.

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is widely employed in metabolomics owing to its high resolution, reproducibility, and compatibility with volatile and semi-volatile compounds. While helium has traditionally been used as the carrier gas, increasing costs and global shortages have prompted the exploration of hydrogen gas as an alternative. Hydrogen offers faster analysis times and reduced ion source contamination but presents challenges, including ion source reactions, which can change compound fragmentation patterns. To address this, a hydrogen-deactivated electron ionization (EI) s

Interface-Engineered SnO2-PdO-Pd2Sn Composite: Toward High-Sensitivity Hydrogen Detection with Ultralow Detection Limit at Low Temperatures.

Traditional SnO2-based gas sensors are hindered by poor low-temperature sensitivity, slow response kinetics, and dependence on high-temperature operating conditions (200°C-500°C), limiting practical trace hydrogen-leak detection. To address this, we develop a simple and controllable two-step strategy. A Sn/Pd bimetallic precursor is first prepared via mild hydrothermal deposition, then calcined in inert argon to realize in situ phase transformation and interfacial regulation, successfully yielding an SnO2-PdO-Pd2Sn (SPO/PS) composite suitable for rapid and efficient low-temperature hydrogen de

Engineering Multiple Hydrogen-Bond Sites With D-π-A Motifs for Strong Optical Nonlinearity and Giant Birefringence in Organic-Inorganic Halides.

Organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have emerged as promising nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, but simultaneously achieving large birefringence (Δn) and strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) remains challenging owing to the propensity of π-conjugated organic motifs to favor centrosymmetric packing. Herein, we develop a molecular design strategy by constructing a donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) long-chain cation, [DA7ClQ]2+, featuring multiple hydrogen-bonding sites. Hybridization with inorganic [Sb2Cl9]3- anions yields the non-centrosymmetric crystal (DA7ClQ)SbCl5, which exhibits a record bir

Molecular hydrogen suppresses gut inflammation and pyroptosis in ulcerative colitis through promoting PKM2 lactylation to block NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

BACKGROUND: Molecular hydrogen is considered to be able to alleviate the progression of ulcerative colitis (UC), whose underlying molecular mechanism remains largely unclear. METHODS: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-stimulated human colonic epithelial cells (HCoEpiC) were used to mimic UC model in vitro and were treated with hydrogen-rich medium (HRM). Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mice were used to construct UC model in vivo and were administrated by hydrogen-rich water (HRW). Colon tissues from UC patients and healthy volunteers were collected. Release of inflam

Hydrogen-bonded molecular trimers: Vibration-tunneling states and low-frequency spectra from rigorous high-dimensional quantum calculations.

Noncovalently bound molecular trimers, held together by hydrogen-bonded and van der Waals interactions, are the smallest clusters in which the three-body interactions can manifest. Accurate description of these nonadditive interactions is of great importance since they play a crucial role in shaping the energetics, structural, and dynamical properties of condensed phases. Molecular trimers offer a unique opportunity for quantifying the three-body interactions through the comparison of the trimer vibration-tunneling states and spectra computed accurately on a high-level many-body potential ener

Hydrogen-bond enhanced Tb/Eu-MOF for visual detection of multiple trace fluoroquinolones in seawater and a portable 3D-printed sensor.

To address the urgent need for rapid and on-site detection of trace antibiotic contamination in marine environments, this study employs a hydrogen-bond network enhancement strategy to construct a highly salt-resistant dual-lanthanide MOF, Tb/Eu-BTC@BTEC, for the sensitive and visual sensing of three fluoroquinolone antibiotics. By introducing the carboxyl-rich ligand H4BTEC to cooperate with H3BTC, a unique "double-crown" three-dimensional structure was formed to significantly reinforce intermolecular hydrogen-bonding networks and π-π stacking interactions. This structural design effectively r

Overcoming Data Starvation: Automated Virtual Reaction Exploration and Machine Learning Discovery of p-Block Metal Catalysts for Borrowing Hydrogen.

(De)Hydrogenation processes, traditionally dominated by d-block transition metals, offer a sustainable route for molecular synthesis using alcohols as feedstocks. However, reliance on noble metals, mechanistic complexity, and limited substrate scope drive the search for alternatives. p-Block metals represent an attractive but long-standing challenge due to their strong oxophilicity and Lewis acidity. In particular, the lack of d-orbitals for electronic buffering impedes catalytic dehydrogenation/hydrogenation cycling and confines p-block hydrides to stoichiometric use. To overcome these intrin…

Dimensional reduction of hydrogen-bonding networks induced by hierarchical confinement to promote ultra-fast adsorption of hydrated ions to targeted sites.

Salt ions typically exist as hydrated states in aqueous environments, wherein the hydration shell impedes their contact with active sites, limiting adsorption efficiency. To address this, we innovatively design hierarchical confined structure to achieve complete removal of hydrated shell. This structure is constructed by intercalating one-dimensional (1D) nanochannel metal-organic framework (MOF) into two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) interlayers. The resulting M-MOF@GO adsorbent exhibits exceptional performance, achieving capacities of 250.2 mg·g‒1 for hydrated phosphate and 281.6 mg·g

Confinement-Engineered Ir-IrO2 Interfaces Activate Hydrogen-Bond-Mediated Oxide Pathway Mechanism for Durable Acidic Water Oxidation.

Achieving durable acidic oxygen evolution at low iridium loadings remains the bottleneck for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Conventional Ir catalysts are limited by adsorbate evolution mechanism scaling and lattice-oxygen-induced degradation, while the oxide pathway mechanism (OPM) has remained inaccessible due to the instability of sub-2.9 Å Ir─Ir dual sites under high anodic potentials. Here, we report a confinement-engineered strategy that localizes Ir precursors within the nanochannels and interlayer galleries of a layered covalent organic framework, yielding ultrathi

Multichannel Integrated Fiber-Optic End-Face Sensor for Deuterium Detection from Hydrogen Via Flow-Temperature Synergistic Regulation.

Inspired by the selective adsorption and separation technology of isotope gases using porous materials, this work reports the first successful realization of optical fiber-based deuterium (D2) sensing in the presence of hydrogen (H2). Initially, we propose a novel three-core fiber (TCF) end-face sensor integrating two microtips and a plasmonic metasurface on its end-face, enabling simultaneous sensing of three parameters: temperature, flow velocity, and gas concentration. Specifically, the two microprobes form two Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavities; the glass microprobe is used for flow velocity sensin
