OBJECTIVE: This study explores how individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) integrate self-management (SM) into their everyday lives post-discharge from initial rehabilitation. It focuses on identifying the approaches they employ in balancing health tasks with personal and societal roles and the influencing factors.
METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 32 participants, recruited from four rehabilitation centers across Switzerland, three months post-rehabilitation. Data collection spanned from November 2022 to May 2024. We used thematic analysis to identify the challenges and

The factor structure of personality disorder (PD) criteria has long been debated, but due to previous heterogeneous findings, a common structure to represent covariation among the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV)/DSM-5 Section II PD criteria remains an open question. This study integrated individual participant data from 25 samples (N = 30,545) to conduct factor analyses of PD criteria. Measurement invariance tests across gender, clinical status, and assessment method indicated substantial structural differences between interview-based and self-rep

Ensuring patient and family members' preparedness for dying is a key focus for palliative care. This article draws on the retrospective accounts of bereaved adult family members' experiences of anticipation and preparedness following a death in palliative or residential aged care. Participants completed in-depth interviews (n = 36). A constructivist grounded theory approach guided data collection and analysis, through which the complexities of engaging in preparedness whilst navigating questions of how to care well emerged. We propose the concept of anticipation fatigue as a means by which to

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of adverse mental health outcomes experienced by deaf adults - members of deaf communities connected through a shared sign language and culture is greater than that faced by their hearing counterparts. In addition to everyday life stressors, deaf people can experience further communication related stressors. For this group, early life communication and language deprivation is a significant contributing factor to subsequent adverse mental health outcomes. This study aimed to understand how deaf people viewed the impact of inadequate access to early life communication

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological, autoimmune condition which affects the nervous system, creating several physiological and psychosocial issues. Simultaneously, there is an expanding body of research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) populations which indicates health inequalities due to heteronormativity. Despite this, research exploring chronic illness, neurological conditions, and MS within LGBQ contexts remains limited. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the experience of LGBQ people living with MS. We undertook a culturally responsive multi-method approach, employing ve

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and loneliness are pervasive issues among older adults in the United States, carrying significant health risks. Low-income older adults are particularly vulnerable to these challenges compared with their higher-income counterparts due to their limited access to resources and social networks. Many low-income older adults live in subsidized housing, which has the potential to offer unique support tailored to their needs. The intersection of aging and the unique social circumstances faced by low-income older adults significantly influences how they navigate crises.

BACKGROUND: Establishing healthy behaviors during a child's first 5 years is essential for healthy growth. Parents are targeted as agents of change because they serve as primary models of behavior during this period. Although parent-focused interventions often target empowerment as a driver of change, our understanding of how parents experience the process of empowerment in the context of child health promotion remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study explored the process by which parents gain empowerment through participation in a health promotion intervention.

This retrospective descriptive study sought to explore the lived experiences of Black mothers with HIV navigating HIV medical care while parenting dependent children. Six themes were generated from the semi-structured interviews conducted with mothers ( N = 9) related to motherhood, interactions with health care systems and providers, coping, social support, HIV self-management, and HIV prevention. Findings suggested that supportive interpersonal relationships with HIV health care providers, HIV nondisclosure to family and friends, and social network support, inclusive of health care providers

Recent therapeutic approaches to auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) exploit the person-like qualities of voices. Little is known, however, about how, why, and when AVH become personified. We aimed to investigate personification in individuals' early voice-hearing experiences. We invited Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) service users aged 16-65 to participate in a semistructured interview on AVH phenomenology. Forty voice-hearers (M = 114.13 days in EIP) were recruited through 2 National Health Service trusts in northern England. We used content and thematic analysis to code the intervie

Among livestock species, poultry and small ruminants are of particular importance to rural women in low- and middle-income countries, as means to generate income, provide nutritious food for the family, accumulate wealth, and confer social status. Newcastle disease (ND) and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) are widespread livestock diseases of poultry and small ruminants, respectively. While both diseases are vaccine preventable, numerous constraints limit the availability of and access to livestock vaccines, especially among the most vulnerable populations in developing countries. Sleep disturbances are common in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and can have major impacts on workplace performance and functioning. Although effects between PTSD and sleep broadly have been documented, little work has tested their day-to-day temporal relationship particularly in those exposed to occupational trauma. The present study examined daily, bidirectional associations between PTSD symptoms and self-reported sleep duration and quality in World Trade Center (WTC) responders oversampled for PTSD. WTC responders (N = 202; 19.3% with current PTSD diagnosis) were recruited from the Lo

INTRODUCTION: Elderly persons who live alone are more likely to be socially isolated and at increased risk of adverse health outcomes, unnecessary hospital re-admissions and premature mortality. We aimed to understand the health-seeking behaviour of elderly persons living alone in public rental housing in Singapore.
METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted using a semi-structured question guide. Participants were selected using a purposive sampling approach. Interviews were conducted until theme saturation was reached. Qualitative data collected was analysed using manual thematic coding me

The popular characterisation of acne as a mundane and insignificant feature of adolescence sits at odds with academic studies showing the detrimental impacts of the condition on people of various ages. Drawing from in-depth qualitative interviews with 13- to 25-year olds living in England, this article will consider some of the tensions between two messages about acne through the ambiguities in young people's narratives. Consistent with existing literature on skin conditions and visual differences more broadly, participants in the study recounted ways in which acne negatively shaped their live

BACKGROUND: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a neurogenetic condition characterized by high rates of psychiatric disorders. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess psychiatric disorders in young children with 22q11DS using a structured psychiatric diagnostic interview, and one of few studies to use the complete gold standard diagnostic evaluation to examine the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in young children with 22q11DS and compare it to a matched control group with iASD.
METHODS: We identified the psychiatric disorders and autistic phenotype of young chi

OBJECTIVE: Stroke is a major public health problem worldwide, and its neuropsychiatric sequelae are frequent and disabling. Furthermore, there is evidence that these sequelae impair recovery. Brazil has the highest stroke rates in Latin America, but data on the frequency of neuropsychiatric disorders in these patients are scarce. This study aimed to identify mental disorders among in-hospital patients with acute ischemic stroke.
METHODS: The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview-Plus (MINI-Plus) was applied to 60 patients during the first week of hospitalization.
RESULTS: Psychiatric

OBJECTIVE: To understand factors contributing to women's level of preparedness for their first pelvic examination.
METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews with young women, aged 18-24 years, who had undergone at least one pelvic examination. This analysis explored 1) gynecologic and health care experience before the first pelvic examination, 2) preprocedure expectations and concerns, and 3) preprocedure knowledge about the examination. Interviews were transcribed and computer-assisted content analysis was performed; salient themes are presented.
RESULTS: Thirty women completed interv

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops after exposure to a potentially traumatic event. Its clinical condition may lead to the development of risk behaviors, and its early detection is a relevant aspect to be considered. The aim of this study was to assess the association between childhood trauma and suicide risk in individuals with PTSD.
METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study conducted with individuals aged 18 to 60 years who were evaluated at a mental health research outpatient clinic. PTSD diagnosis and suicide risk identification were performed using specific module

During the past two decades, a number of studies have found that depressed patients frequently have manic symptoms intermixed with depressive symptoms. While the frequency of mixed syndromes are more common in bipolar than in unipolar depressives, mixed states are also common in patients with major depressive disorder. The admixture of symptoms may be evident when depressed patients present for treatment, or they may emerge during ongoing treatment. In some patients, treatment with antidepressant medication might precipitate the emergence of mixed states. It would therefore be useful to system

Child maltreatment represents a major risk factor for the development of emotional and behavioral problems, especially posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While effective trauma-focused treatments are available, little is known about the usual mental healthcare for abused youths in Germany. The present study compared the utilization of mental healthcare in abused youths who had developed a PTSD (N = 95) with a group presenting other mental disorders (N = 146). Semistructured interviews were used to assess maltreatment histories, current mental health, and healthcare utilization. In addition,
