This work describes the synthesis and testing of a novel environmental sorbent that combines the advantages of biochar, chitosan, and zerovalent iron (ZVI). Chitosan was used as a dispersing and soldering reagent to attach fine ZVI particles onto bamboo biochar surfaces. Density functional theory calculations have been carried out to study the reaction mechanism of the [Fe(III)(F20TPP)Cl] catalyzed C-H amination reaction. The calculations show that the classical three-step mechanism for other metals (Ru, Rh, Ir and Zn), including N2 liberation, C-N bond formation and 1,2-hydrogen shift, does not fit the iron(III)-catalyzed system. After N2 liberation, the favorable reaction pathway for the iron(iii)-catalyzed system is a 1,2-hydrogen shift preceding C-N bond formation, i.e., a H-abstraction/radical rebound mechanism.

We have applied (57)Fe nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) to identify protein-bound dinitrosyl iron complexes. Intense NRVS peaks due to vibrations of the N-Fe-N unit can be observed between 500 and 700 cm(-1) and are diagnostic indicators of the type of iron dinitrosyl species present. NRVS spectra for four iron dinitrosyl model compounds are presented and used as benchmarks for the identification of species formed in the reaction of Pyrococcus furiosus ferredoxin D14C with nitric oxide.

The reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) by zero-valent iron (ZVI) is self-inhibiting in near natural groundwater because insulating Fe(III)-Cr(III) (oxy)hydroxide film forms on the ZVI surface during the reaction.
