Hemorrhage and venous thromboembolism in critically ill patients with COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: The majority of patients with COVID-19 showed mild symptoms. However, approximately 5% of them were critically ill and require intensive care unit admission for advanced life supports. Patients in the intensive care unit were high risk for venous thromboembolism and hemorrhage due to the immobility and anticoagulants used during advanced life supports. The aim of the study was to report the incidence and treatments of the two complications in such patients. METHOD: Patients with COVID-19 (Group 1) and patients with community-acquired pneumonia (Group 2) that required intensive care

A Stepped Care, Peer-Delivered Intervention to Improve Substance Use and HIV Medication Adherence in Primary Care in South Africa (Project Khanya): Protocol for a Hybrid Type 2 Effectiveness-Implementation Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: A substance use disorder (SUD) treatment gap exists globally, with the greatest gaps in settings with the fewest resources. Integrating SUD care into primary care is needed to expand access to SUD care and support adherence to chronic disease services, especially HIV, in high-burden areas. Guided by stakeholder feedback, our team has previously adapted and piloted a peer-delivered behavioral intervention for antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence for people with HIV and SUD in HIV care ("Khanya")-based on behavioral activation, problem-solving, motivational interviewing, and mindfu

Time Heals Some Wounds? Burnout but Not Secondary Traumatic Stress in Critical Care Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Burnout among new nurses has been widely documented. Less is known about how years of professional experience relate to distinct components of professional quality of life, including compassion satisfaction and secondary traumatic stress. Early-career nurses appear particularly vulnerable to occupational strain, warranting examination of how years of experience may influence perceptions of professional well-being. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between years of nursing experience and professional quality of life among critical care nurses. METHODS: A quantitative, cross-s

Impacts of research that are meaningful to people with chronic kidney disease and their caregivers: a workshop report.

BACKGROUND: Research impacts are typically measured by academic indicators and standards. These indicators often do not capture translational or purposeful benefits to society, in particular patients and caregivers. In this workshop, we aimed to identify impacts of research that are important to people with chronic kidney disease, caregivers and health professionals. METHODS: We held a national workshop with ten breakout groups involving patients, caregivers and health professionals from Australia and New Zealand, to discuss the importance of research impact. The transcripts were thematically

Ebstein's Anomaly: From Fetus to Adult-Literature Review and Pathway for Patient Care.

Ebstein's anomaly, first described in 1866 by Dr William Ebstein, accounts for 0.3-0.5% of congenital heart defects and represents 40% of congenital tricuspid valve abnormalities. Ebstein's anomaly affects the development of the tricuspid valve with widely varying morphology and, therefore, clinical presentation. Associated congenital cardiac lesions tend to be found more often in younger patients and may even be the reason for presentation. Presentation can vary from the most extreme form in fetal life, to asymptomatic diagnosis late in adult life. The most symptomatic patients need intensive

[Minimal cerebral dysfunctions and ADHD in adulthood].

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is of great importance not only in children but also in adults; however, despite extensive research there are still many unsolved questions with respect to the diagnosis. Patients not only suffer from attention deficits and hyperactivity but also a variety of other problems, such as dyspraxia, problems with stimulus discrimination, dysgrammatism, legasthenia, or motor coordination problems. Furthermore, there are also psychopathological disorders, such as problems with memory, formal thinking, emotional modulation, drive and vegetative stability,

Childhood and maternal infections and risk of acute leukaemia in children with Down syndrome: a report from the Children's Oncology Group.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) are highly susceptible to acute leukaemia. Given the potential role of infections in the aetiology of leukaemia in children without DS, we investigated whether there was an association between early-life infections and acute leukaemia in children with DS. Maternal infections during pregnancy were also examined. We enrolled 158 incident cases of acute leukaemia in children with DS (97 acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and 61 acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)) diagnosed at Children's Oncology Group institutions between 1997 and 2002. DS controls (N=173) were select

Corrigendum to "Optimising outcomes for adults with Cystic Fibrosis taking CFTR modulators by individualising care: Personalised data linkage to understand treatment optimisation (PLUTO), a novel clinical framework" [Respirat. Med. 239 (2025)].

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting, inherited condition in which a novel class of oral medicine, CFTR modulators, has revolutionised symptoms and health indicators, providing an opportunity to evaluate traditional treatment regimens with the hope of reducing burden. Additionally, there is cautious optimism that life expectancy for people with CF born today could ultimately compare to that of the general population. Given this potential, there is a need and requirement to optimise treatment to balance burden with the best clinical outcomes for each person with CF in an individualised manne

Rehabilitation in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Recommendations for Clinical Practice and Further Research.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition characterized by the degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons. This degeneration leads to a gradual muscle weakness, dysarthria, dysphagia, respiratory insufficiency, and, in some patients, alterations in cognitive and behavioral performance. Regardless of advancements made in pharmacological and gene-targeted interventions, a definitive curative treatment remains elusive. Consequently, rehabilitation plays a pivotal role in preserving autonomy, participation, and overall quality of life. This review outlines

Growing Up with HIV: (Non)adaptive Processes in Perinatally-Infected Adolescents and Young Adults.

Research on adolescents and young adults living with perinatally acquired Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has largely emphasized biomedical aspects, with limited attention to developmental and psychosocial dimensions. This study explored how Portuguese adolescents and young adults understand their diagnosis, adapt to living with HIV, and perceive its impact across life domains. Twelve semi-structured interviews with youth receiving care at a pediatric hospital in northern Portugal were analyzed using Thematic Analysis. Findings highlighted a continuum of adaptation, ranging from denial and

Patient autonomy in advance care planning for Parkinson's disease: Systematic review with narrative synthesis.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) often experience delays in initiating advance care planning (ACP) and palliative care (PC) which can impact their autonomy as cognitive function declines. Because patient autonomy and decision-making in ACP and PC for individuals with PD is insufficiently explored, this systematic review with narrative synthesis aims to fill this gap by reviewing the existing literature on these topics. It examines how awareness and timing influences ACP and PC implementation, how illness narratives shape decision-making and autonomy perceptions and the rol

Time-course evolution of counterfactual thinking after early pregnancy loss.

Counterfactual thinking (CT), the tendency to consider how events might have been different, is a common cognitive process following negative life events. This longitudinal study examines the prevalence and time-course evolution of CT immediately after early pregnancy loss. A sample of 119 women who experienced early pregnancy loss completed an online psychological assessment measuring traumatic impact, trait rumination, and CT presence, frequency, and content. The survey was administered at one week, one month, and four months post-loss. CT was highly prevalent (72%) and decreased over time.
