Effect of Watch-Assess-Need Intervention-Think Model Education and Training Program for Family Caregivers in Dementia Care.

Most family caregivers of people living with dementia in Taiwan only receive initial dementia-related information after diagnosis, with limited subsequent training in dementia care management, which may contribute to caregiver stress. The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of the Watch-Assess-Need Intervention-Think (WANT) model education and training program in enhancing family caregivers' dementia care competence and self-efficacy. A pre-post experimental design was conducted with a mixed-methods approach for data collection. Ninety family caregivers of people living with dem

Neurotrophic keratopathy in childhood: advances in understanding of pathogenesis and management.

Neurotrophic keratopathy (NK) is an uncommon corneal disorder caused by trigeminal nerve dysfunction, leading to loss of ocular surface sensation, impaired corneal epithelial maintenance, and possible progressive stromal lysis. NK is of added potential visual significance in children on account of the risk of amblyopia resulting from stromal opacification. Unlike acquired NK in adult-onset disease, NK in childhood is frequently congenital or inherited, linked to genetic pain insensitivity syndromes, cranial dysinnervation disorders or broader developmental anomalies. Visual function can be wel

Multimodal PET Imaging Unveils Early Metabolic Compensation Mechanisms and Dopaminergic Degeneration in Parkinson's Disease.

This study aimed to elucidate the interplay between cerebral glucose metabolism and dopaminergic degeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD) using multimodal PET imaging (18F-FDG and 18F-FP-DTBZ) and to validate a combined biomarker for enhancing early PD diagnosis. Thirty-two PD patients (Hoehn-Yahr stage ≤ 2, disease duration ≤ 5 years) and 18 healthy controls underwent 18F-FDG and 18F-FP-DTBZ PET/MR imaging. Statistical analyses included group comparisons (t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests) and correlation analyses (Pearson/Spearman). A logistic regression model was employed to integrate frontal c

Tissue metal concentrations and toxicity in wild turkeys following chronic exposure to mining-contaminated soils in southeast Missouri, USA.

The Big River watershed in southeast Missouri (SEMO) is a Superfund site with an extensive history of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) mining; cadmium (Cd) and other metals also occur in the ore and waste materials. We examined whether SEMO wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) exposed to mining-contaminated floodplain soils and food resources in the Big River watershed had elevated metal concentrations in their tissues, indicating Pb poisoning and associated toxic effects. Compared to reference birds (n = 15) harvested in northern Missouri, SEMO turkeys (n = 23) had significantly elevated Pb concentratio

Cagrilintide-semaglutide (CagriSema) as an add-on to basal insulin in adults with type 2 diabetes (REIMAGINE 3): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, phase 3 study.

BACKGROUND: Basal insulin treatment for type 2 diabetes often results in inadequate glycaemic control and is associated with weight gain and increased risk of hypoglycaemia. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of a once per week combination of cagrilintide with semaglutide (CagriSema) versus placebo as an add-on to basal insulin in individuals with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: This double-blind, parallel-group, randomised, controlled, phase 3a study (REIMAGINE 3) was done at 46 centres (university hospitals, health-care centres, research centres, and other clinical trial sites) in six co

Pharmacological principles of intravitreal drug therapy and their implications for clinical practice: a primer for the ophthalmologist.

Intravitreal (IVT) anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapies are the standard of care for retinal diseases such as neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic macular oedema (DMO). Despite the favourable efficacy and safety profiles of these therapies, decreasing the treatment burden is still an unmet need because frequent injections may be required over many years. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of IVT therapies, such as ocular half-life and clearance, can affect the duration of VEGF suppression and thus influence clinical outcomes.

Risk analysis index demonstrates superior predictive performance compared to traditional frailty metrics in elderly female patients undergoing inpatient total shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: While frailty assessment has become integral to preoperative risk stratification, the optimal measurement tool remains unclear for elderly women undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). This study compared the predictive performance of the Risk Analysis Index (RAI) against traditional metrics, including the modified frailty index-5 (mFI-5) and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) in this specific population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of ACS NSQIP data from 2015-2021, including female patients aged 65-89 undergoing inpatient TSA. RAI incorporates age, f

In vivo effects of lead on sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus: toxicity, bioconcentration and oxidative stress response.

The current study aims to investigate the median lethal concentration (LC50 at 96 h) of lead for the female sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. Adult urchins were exposed to six gradually increasing concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 10 mg/L) of lead for 96 h. The mortality of the urchins was directly proportional to the lead concentration, and the LC50 value at 96 h was 3.6 mg/L. Additionally, lead concentration and the bioconcentration factor (BCF) in the gonads of control sea urchins and urchins exposed to two selected concentrations (0.5 and 1 mg/L) were determined after 96 h of exposure. Clinical and Radiological Features of Aphasia Caused by Brainstem Infarction: Two Case Reports.

Cognitive impairment resulting from cerebellar damage, known as cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome (CCAS), can cause language impairment and aphasia. The disruption of the cerebro-cerebellar pathway is a possible mechanism for CCAS. Consequently, aphasia may also arise from brainstem lesions. However, the precise mechanisms of brainstem-induced aphasia are not fully understood owing to the scarcity of published reports describing this condition. Herein, we investigated characteristics of patients with aphasia attributed to the brainstem infarction. We retrospectively analyzed medical reco
