Dental Pulp Stem Cell-Derived Conditioned Medium Alleviates Subarachnoid Hemorrhage-Induced Microcirculation Impairment by Promoting M2 Microglia Polarization and Reducing Astrocyte Swelling.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) can cause severe neurological deficits and high mortality. Early brain edema following SAH contributes to the initiation of microcirculation impairment and may further lead to delayed ischemic neurologic deficit (DIND). This study aimed to investigate whether dental pulp stem cell conditioned medium (DPSC-CM) ameliorates SAH-induced microcirculation impairment and the underlying mechanisms. SAH was induced via intrathecal injection of fresh autologous blood in Wistar male adult rat. DPSC-CM or DPSC-CM + insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1) antibody was rando

Increased Root Canal Endotoxin Levels are Associated with Chronic Apical Periodontitis, Increased Oxidative and Nitrosative Stress, Major Depression, Severity of Depression, and a Lowered Quality of Life.

Evidence indicates that major depression is accompanied by increased translocation of gut commensal Gram-negative bacteria (leaky gut) and consequent activation of oxidative and nitrosative (O&NS) pathways. This present study examined the associations among chronic apical periodontitis (CAP), root canal endotoxin levels (lipopolysaccharides, LPS), O&NS pathways, depressive symptoms, and quality of life. Measurements included advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), nitric oxide metabolites (NOx), lipid peroxides (LOOH), -sulfhydryl (SH) groups, total radical trapping antioxidant parameter (

New models for describing outliers in meta-analysis.

An unobserved random effect is often used to describe the between-study variation that is apparent in meta-analysis datasets. A normally distributed random effect is conventionally used for this purpose. When outliers or other unusual estimates are included in the analysis, the use of alternative random effect distributions has previously been proposed. Instead of adopting the usual hierarchical approach to modelling between-study variation, and so directly modelling the study specific true underling effects, we propose two new marginal distributions for modelling heterogeneous datasets. These

Complications associated with implant migration into the maxillary sinus cavity.

BACKGROUND: Migration of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is an uncommon, but increasingly reported complication. Implant migration may result from initial lack of primary stability, intrasinusal and nasal pressure changes, autoimmune reaction to the implant or incorrect distribution of occlusal forces. This retrospective study aims at analyzing the factors that may influence implant migration into the maxillary sinus cavity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen patients presenting a total 15 implants that migrated into the maxillary sinus were recruited. Diagnosis of this complication was

Inflammation triggers constitutive activity and agonist-induced negative responses at M(3) muscarinic receptor in dental pulp.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the inflammation of rat dental pulp induces the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) constitutive receptor activity. Pulpitis was induced with bacterial lipolysaccharide in rat incisors dental pulp. Saturation assay with [(3)H]-quinuclidinyl benzilate ([(3)H] QNB), competitive binding with different mAChR antagonist subtypes, and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity were performed. A drastic change in expression and response to mAChR subtypes was observed in pulpitis. Inflamed pulp expressed high number of M(3) mAChR of high affinity, w

Virulence factors of the oral spirochete Treponema denticola.

There is compelling evidence that treponemes are involved in the etiology of several chronic diseases, including chronic periodontitis as well as other forms of periodontal disease. There are interesting parallels with other chronic diseases caused by treponemes that may indicate similar virulence characteristics. Chronic periodontitis is a polymicrobial disease, and recent animal studies indicate that co-infection of Treponema denticola with other periodontal pathogens can enhance alveolar bone resorption. The bacterium has a suite of molecular determinants that could enable it to cause tissu

Lower incisor intrusion with intraoral transosseous stainless steel wire anchorage in rabbits.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the potential use of intraoral transosseous stainless steel wires as anchorage for intrusion of the lower incisors using a rabbit model. Placement of intraoral transosseous stainless steel wires around incisors is similar to that of intraoral transosseous wiring of edentulous mandibular fractures. Ten male New Zealand rabbits, 9 +/- 1.5 months of age, average weight 1.8 +/- 0.3 kg, were used in this study. One lower incisor was intruded with a 50 g bilateral force using a coil spring for 10 weeks, while the other incisor served as the control. Cl

Biomechanical evaluation of chincup treatment with various force vectors.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical effects of chincup treatment by using a 3-dimensional finite element model. METHODS: Three-dimensional models of the mandible and the temporomandibular joint were modeled and analyzed. The final mesh consisted of 1572 solid elements with 5432 nodes. The chincup with 500 g of force was applied in a direction from the chin toward the mandibular condyle, the coronoid process, and a point anterior to the coronoid process. Then, the mechanical responses in terms of displacement and von Mises stresses are evaluated. RESULTS: The

Correspondences of hydrostatic pressure in periodontal ligament with regions of root resorption: a clinical and a finite element study of the same human teeth.

INTRODUCTION: The main objectives of this study were to generate individual finite element models of extracted human upper first premolars, and to simulate the distribution of the hydrostatic pressure in the periodontal ligament (PDL) of these models for evaluation of the risk of root resorption. METHODS: The individual extracted teeth were from a previous in vivo study that investigated root resorption after application of continuous intrusive forces. The results of experimental examination and simulations were compared on these identical tooth roots. The applied force system was 0.5N and 1.
