The Contribution of Stress and Distress to Cardiovascular Health in Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors are at risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality that is not fully explained by cancer-directed therapies. We examined the contribution of emotional stress and distress to cardiac health in adult survivors of childhood cancer. METHODS: Participants included 3,267 adult survivors enrolled in the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort Study [median (range) 29.9 (18.1-64.5) years of age; 7.7 (0-24.8) years at diagnosis; 48.4% female]. Survivors completed comprehensive medical assessments and standardized measures of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress symptom

Social & psychological factors associated with oral analgesic use in knee osteoarthritis management.

OBJECTIVE: Determine modifiable social and psychological health factors that are associated with use of oral opioid and non-opioid medications for OA. METHODS: Patients were categorized based on use of the following oral medications: opioids (with/without other oral analgesic treatments), non-opioid analgesics, and no oral analgesic treatment. We used multinomial logistic regression models to estimate adjusted relative risk ratios (RRRs) of using an opioid or a non-opioid analgesic (vs. no oral analgesic treatment), comparing patients by levels of social support (Medical Outcomes Study scale)

Investigation of the Relationship Between Intolerance of Uncertainty, Metacognitions, Maladaptive Coping, and Fear of Cancer Recurrence via Moderated Mediation Model.

OBJECTIVE: In recent years, many studies have investigated the triggers, perpetuating factors, and outcomes of Fear of Cancer Recurrence (FCR), highlighting its complexity with multiple dimensions that encompass both antecedents and consequences. In this sense, the cognitive approach to FCR has explored variables such as metacognition, maladaptive coping strategies, and intolerance of uncertainty (IU). On the other hand, the findings of a restricted number of studies investigating the relationship between FCR and stated variables appear to be inconsistent. The objective of this study was thus

From stress to anhedonia: differential gene expression, behavioural and biochemical modulations in resilient versus susceptible mice in an ultrasound model of juvenile depression.

Juvenile depression is an increasingly recognized mental health condition, distinct from adult depression. ‘Emotional stress’, i.e., adverse experience of primarily psychological nature, is a risk factor of particular importance for juvenile depression. Like adults, adolescents display variable susceptibility to depression precipitated by stress, the nature of which is poorly understood. We employed the 3-week ultrasound (US) stress in juvenile C57BL/6 mice to compare behavioral and molecular features of susceptible and resilient to depressive-like syndrome subsets of animals. Mice were expose

Are employment and social integration more strongly associated with deaths of despair than psychological or economic distress?

The label "deaths of despair" for rising US mortality related to drugs/alcohol/suicide seems to implicate emotional distress as the cause. However, a Durkheimian approach would argue that underlying structural factors shape individuals' behavior and emotions. Despite a growing literature on deaths of despair, no study has directly compared the effects of distress and structural factors on deaths of despair versus other causes of mortality. Using data from the Midlife in the United States study with approximately 26 years of mortality follow-up, we evaluated whether psychological or economic di

Intercalated Amygdala Dysfunction Drives Avoidance Extinction Deficits in the Sapap3 Mouse Model of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The avoidance of aversive stimuli through negative reinforcement learning, which demands dynamic responding to both positive and negative stimuli that often conflict with each other, is critical for survival in real-world environments. Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder commonly exhibit impaired negative reinforcement and extinction, perhaps involving deficits in amygdala functioning. The intercalated nuclei of the amygdala (ITC) is an amygdala subregion of particular interest that has been linked to negative reinforcement and extinction, with distinct clusters mediatin

Engram Size Varies with Learning and Reflects Memory Content and Precision.

Memories are rarely acquired under ideal conditions, rendering them vulnerable to profound omissions, errors, and ambiguities. Consistent with this, recent work using context fear conditioning has shown that memories formed after inadequate learning time display a variety of maladaptive properties, including overgeneralization to similar contexts. However, the neuronal basis of such poor learning and memory imprecision remains unknown. Using c-fos to track neuronal activity in male mice, we examined how these learning-dependent changes in context fear memory precision are encoded in hippocampa

Predictors of post-traumatic stress symptoms following occupational accidents: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Occupational accidents are highly stressful events that frequently occur and impact both the physical and mental health of workers. The aim of this study was to longitudinally assess a predictive model of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in workers who have suffered a recent accident. METHOD: Two hundred and forty-four workers (77.8% men), aged 18 to 73 years, who had experienced an accident during the last month that resulted in hospitalization and/or ten or more days of sick leave, were surveyed. A second survey was carried out six months later. Regression analyses included p

Keeping your eye on the target: eye-hand coordination in a repetitive Fitts' task.

In a cyclical Fitts' task, hand movements transition from continuous to discrete movements when the Index of Difficulty (ID) increases. Moreover, at high ID (small target), the eyes saccade to and subsequently fixate the targets at every movement, while at low ID (large target) intermittent monitoring is used. By hypothesis, the (periodic) gaze shifts are abandoned for movement times shorter than about 0.350 s due to systemic constraints (i.e., a refractory period and intrinsic latency). If so, the transition in eye and hand movements is independent. To investigate these issues, the present st

Mild Social Stress in Mice Produces Opioid-Mediated Analgesia in Visceral but Not Somatic Pain States.

UNLABELLED: Visceral pain has a greater emotional component than somatic pain. To determine if the stress-induced analgesic response is differentially expressed in visceral versus somatic pain states, we studied the effects of a mild social stressor in either acute visceral or somatic pain states in mice. We show that the presence of an unfamiliar conspecific mouse (stranger) in an adjacent cubicle of a standard transparent observation box produced elevated plasma corticosterone levels compared with mice tested alone, suggesting that the mere presence of a stranger is stressful. We then observ

Suppression of reward-induced dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens in animal models of depression: Differential responses to drug treatment.

Anhedonia, the loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable activities, is a core symptom of major depressive disorder, suggesting that the brain reward system may be dysfunctional in this condition. Neurochemical changes in the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system are not fully understood in animal models of depression. We investigated reward (30% sucrose intake)-induced DA release in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and the effect of chronic treatment with the antidepressant escitalopram (5mg/kg, intraperitoneally twice daily for 3 weeks) in two animal models of depression. Exposure to chronic

Drinking to Cope With Depressive Symptoms and Ruminative Thinking: A Multiple Mediation Model Among College Students.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the potential psychosocial mechanisms that explain (i.e., mediate) the associations between depressive symptoms and alcohol-related problems can improve interventions targeting college students. OBJECTIVES: The current research examined four distinct facets of rumination (e.g., problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts) and drinking to cope motives as potential explanatory mechanisms by which depressive symptoms are associated with increased alcohol-related problems. METHOD: Participants were undergraduate stud

No unified reward prediction error in local field potentials from the human nucleus accumbens: evidence from epilepsy patients.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), cyclic voltammetry, and single-unit electrophysiology studies suggest that signals measured in the nucleus accumbens (Nacc) during value-based decision making represent reward prediction errors (RPEs), the difference between actual and predicted rewards. Here, we studied the precise temporal and spectral pattern of reward-related signals in the human Nacc. We recorded local field potentials (LFPs) from the Nacc of six epilepsy patients during an economic decision-making task. On each trial, patients decided whether to accept or reject a gamble with

Early life stress produces compulsive-like, but not impulsive, behavior in females.

Adverse experiences during childhood are associated with the development of psychiatric disorders later in life. In particular, childhood abuse and neglect are risk factors for addictive disorders, such as substance misuse and pathological gambling. Impulsivity and compulsivity are key features of these disorders. Therefore, we investigated whether childhood adversity might increase vulnerability for addictive disorders through promotion of compulsive and impulsive behaviors. Rats were exposed to a brief, variable childhood or prepubertal stress protocol (Postnatal Days 25-27), and their behav

α₄β₂ Nicotinic receptor stimulation of the GABAergic system within the orbitofrontal cortex ameliorates the severe crossmodal object recognition impairment in ketamine-treated rats: implications for cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is associated with atypical multisensory integration. Rats treated sub-chronically with NMDA receptor antagonists to model schizophrenia are severely impaired on a tactile-to-visual crossmodal object recognition (CMOR) task, and this deficit is reversed by systemic nicotine. The current study assessed the receptor specificity of the ameliorative effect of nicotine in the CMOR task, as well as the potential for nicotinic receptor (nAChR) interactions with GABA and glutamate. Male Long-Evans rats were treated sub-chronically for 10 days with ketamine or saline and then tested on th

Emotional reactivity and exposure to household stress in childhood predict psychological problems in adolescence.

In recent years, research has examined the role of heightened emotional reactivity and poor regulation on maladjustment during childhood and adolescence. Although much of this research has shown a direct link between high emotional reactivity and maladjustment, there is less research on the ways in which reactivity interacts with contextual factors. Using data from the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD), the current study asks how emotional reactivity in childhood, household chaos, and household income impact changes

Coping with dating violence as a function of violence frequency and solution attribution: a structural modeling approach.

This study presents a structural model of coping with dating violence. The model integrates abuse frequency and solution attribution to relate to college women's choices of coping strategies. Three hundred and twenty-four undergraduate women reported being targets of some physical abuse from a boyfriend and responded to questions regarding the abuse, their solution attribution, and their coping behaviors. Solution attribution mediated the relation between frequency of the abuse and coping. Abuse frequency had a positive effect on external solution attribution, and external solution attribution

Evaluating the effects of olivocochlear feedback on psychophysical measures of frequency selectivity.

Frequency selectivity was evaluated under two conditions designed to assess the influence of a "precursor" stimulus on auditory filter bandwidths. The standard condition consisted of a short masker, immediately followed by a short signal. The precursor condition was identical except a 100-ms sinusoid at the signal frequency (i.e., the precursor) was presented before the masker. The standard and precursor conditions were compared for measurements of psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs), and notched noise tuning characteristics. Estimates of frequency selectivity were significantly broader in the
