Effect of different positions of lumbar traction on pain, function, and range of motion in adults with non-specific low back pain: a randomized clinical trial.

Non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) represents about 80-95% of all LBP cases, yet the optimal lumbar traction position for effective treatment remains debated. To investigate the effect of different positions during lumbar traction on pain, function, and ROM in adults with NSLBP. Thirty participants were randomly allocated to one of three lumbar traction position groups: supine, side-lying, or prone. Outcome measures included the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), International Physical Activity Questionnaire short form (IPAQ-SF), Finger-to-Floor Test (FFT), and Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS)

Effects of resistance-band shoulder exercise on pain, range of motion, and functional disability in diabetic adults with adhesive capsulitis: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis is a disabling musculoskeletal condition in individuals with diabetes mellitus, characterized by shoulder pain, limited range of motion (ROM), and functional impairment. Although exercise therapy is commonly recommended, evidence on resistance-band shoulder exercises in diabetic populations remains limited. This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the effects of a resistance-band shoulder exercise program in adults with diabetes and adhesive capsulitis. METHODS: In this stratified randomized controlled trial, 28 adults with diabetes and clinically confi

Pilot Study of an Integrated Gait and Spine Kinematics Protocol Using Optoelectronic Motion Analysis in Scoliosis Patients: Validation, Usability, and Comparison with Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: Gait analysis offers a comprehensive assessment of locomotion and postural control, which are often altered in individuals with spinal deformities. After validating a stereophotogrammetric protocol for whole-body kinematics, including spinal motion in healthy subjects, its application to clinical populations is needed to assess its clinical relevance. Patients treated with spinal arthrodesis for scoliosis may show reduced trunk mobility and compensatory gait strategies. METHODS: The validated spinal protocol was applied to 10 patients with scoliosis who underwent arthrodesis and 5

Mechanical evidence of the impossibility of directed motion of Trypanosoma cruzi towards preferred organs in the human body, a simulation 2D model within a laminar flow.

The movement of the T. cruzi within the human blood is not completely understood. Video microscopy observations confirm forward motility of the protozoa and relate it to the deformation of the body, nonetheless there are open questions regarding the deformation of the protozoan with its motion in blood, for which a computational model would be very helpful. In this paper we introduce a computational 2D model coupled with Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) to assess the mechanical feasibility of directed motion and tropism by quantify the energetic cost and hydrodynamic constraints of the para

Impact of an upper limb motion-driven virtual rehabilitation system on residual motor function in patients with complete spinal cord injury: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing residual motor function in motor complete spinal cord injury (SCI) patients using surface electromyography (sEMG) is clinically important. Due to the prolonged loss of motor control and peripheral sensory input, patients may struggle to effectively activate residual motor function during sEMG assessments. The study proposes using virtual reality (VR) technology to enhance embodiment, motor imagery (MI), and memory, aiming to improve the activation of residual motor function and increase the sensitivity of sEMG assessments. METHODS: By Recruiting a sample of 12 patients w

The effects of a 6 week rolling and dynamic movement training intervention on tissue hardness, pain pressure threshold, knee range of motion and muscular strength.

Foam Roller (FR) intervention is popular in sports and rehabilitation settings. Recently, we showed that conventional FR (FR_rolling) as well as compression of the target muscle (knee extensors) during joint movement using FR (FR_KM) have similar acute changes. The present study aimed to expand on these findings and compare the effects of a 6-week FR_rolling and FR_KM intervention on the passive and active properties of knee extensors. The participants were 36 healthy male university students (21.9 ± 1.1 years) who were randomly assigned to either controls, FR_rolling, or FR_KM. An interventio

An integrated approach to tracking mandibular position relative to incisal and condylar envelopes of motion during intraoral clinical procedures: a new look at TMJ movements.

Current methods for tracking temporomandibular joint (TMJ) movements are difficult to perform during dental procedures. Yet precise and accurate quantification of mandibular movements is critical for understanding temporomandibular biomechanics and how certain movements may contribute to temporomandibular dysfunction. This is particularly relevant to clinical procedures that might move the mandible near or beyond its functional range of motion. We present a novel approach that integrates cone-beam computed tomography, optical intra-oral scans, and six degree-of-freedom electromagnetic sensor d

Validation of Gait Kinematics With Ramp and Stair Ascent and Descent Revealed by Markerless Motion Capture in Simulated Living Space: Test-Retest Reliability Study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for markerless motion capture systems, which are being widely used in biomechanical and clinical research. Furthermore, by using a markerless motion capture system in a laboratory environment that mimics living spaces, the data acquired on various activities of daily living, such as level walking, ramp walking, and stair ascent and descent, should more closely resemble that of real-life activities. However, the absolute reliability of gait parameters in this context is still unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evalu

The Effect of Bridge Plate Duration on Range of Motion: A Breakpoint Modelling Approach for Distal Radius Fractures Treated With Dorsal Wrist Spanning Bridge Plate.

BACKGROUND: Dorsal wrist spanning plate (DWSP) fixation is a technique used to treat distal radius fractures with severe metaphyseal comminution, diaphyseal extension, and other complex fracture patterns. One concern of this technique is the potential risk of stiffness due to prolonged immobilization. The purpose of our study was to examine the association of DWSP duration on range of motion (ROM) outcomes after plate removal. METHODS: Patients who underwent DWSP fixation for distal radius fracture with greater than 6 months of follow-up after DWSP removal at a single institution were retrosp

Optimal retractor insertion point for nerve safety during total hip arthroplasty: an anatomical study on the femoral and sciatic nerves in relation to hip motion.

BACKGROUND: Nerve injury is one of the most serious complications of total hip arthroplasty (THA). It is suspected to be a result from nerve compression or direct injury caused by an acetabular retractor. The anatomical relationship between the acetabular rim and the femoral and sciatic nerves, including hip motion, has not been investigated. This study aimed to identify the optimal position for retractor insertion during THA to prevent nerve damage. METHODS: A total of 28 hip joints from 14 freshly frozen cadavers were used. Using an anterolateral approach, each cadaver was immobilised in th

In vivo study of a novel 3D-printed motion-preservation artificial cervical corpectomy construct: short-term imaging and biocompatibility evaluations in a goat model.

BACKGROUND: Nonfusion technologies, such as motion-preservation devices, have begun a new era of treatment options in spine surgery. Motion-preservation approaches mainly include total disc replacement for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. However, for multisegment fusion, such as anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion, the options are more limited. Therefore, we designed a novel 3D-printed motion-preservation artificial cervical corpectomy construct (ACCC) for multisegment fusion. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of ACCC in a goat model. METHODS: Goats were treate
