PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of preoperative ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in diagnosing invasive ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN).
METHODS: This retrospective single institution-based study included surgical cases of OSSN, in which UBM was performed preoperatively. The UBM characteristics of OSSN and signs of invasion were studied. The preoperative UBM imaging findings were correlated with the postoperative histopathological examination (HPE). The performance of UBM was studied in predicting invasive OSSN, considering HPE as the gold standard.
RESULTS: Fifteen patients were includ

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remains clinically challenging because of its marked inter- and intra-tumour heterogeneity, the dynamic emergence of therapeutic resistance, and the limited ability of current biomarkers to guide treatment adaptation over time. Recent advances in digital twin (DT) technology have motivated the development of patient-specific, continuously updated computational models capable of integrating multi-scale data to support precision oncology. However, no current DT framework for HNSCC combines molecular stratification, longitudinal monitoring of resistan

Sleeve segmentectomy was originally developed to preserve the lung volume in patients who were unable to tolerate lobectomy. We herein report an immunocompromised patient with potentially curable peripheral squamous cell carcinoma in whom sleeve basal segmentectomy was performed for a 1.8-cm tumor with endobronchial growth that occluded B7 and invaded the inlet of the middle lobar bronchus and B6. To provide sufficient surgical exposure for complex double-barrel reconstruction after segmentectomy, A6 was divided and reconstructed after the anastomosis was complete. This technique may be applic

OBJECTIVE: To develop a nomogram prediction model for occult lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with cT1-2N0 buccal squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC), then to compare its predictive efficacy against depth of invasion (DOI).
METHODS: Clinical data were retrieved for patients undergoing primary tumor resection and neck dissection from June 2020 to August 2024. Based on the risk factors screened by Lasso regression, we established four candidate models: logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, and XGboost. The optimal model was determined by comparing the values of areas und

INTRODUCTION: Oral Carcinoma Cuniculatum (OCC), an uncharted variant of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a slow growing tumor with varied clinical presentation, distinctive histopathological characteristics and generally favorable prognosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This systematic review was conducted as per the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed on PubMed and ScienceDirect database to extract cases of OCC reported until December 2023. A total of 68 cases were reviewed and the impact of different clinical parameters on the prognosis of OCC as well as common pitfalls

Primary Effusion Lymphoma (PEL) is a rare subtype of large B-cell lymphoma characterized by malignant effusions in body cavities, typically without solid masses. Commonly affected areas include pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal spaces. However, PEL can present as Extracavitary Primary Effusion Lymphoma (EC-PEL) with solid tumor masses in different organs. We encountered a unique case of EC-PEL in an HIV-infected patient presenting concomitant with a squamous cell carcinoma as a penile mass. This case highlights the diverse presentations of PEL and the importance of considering lymphomatous

Concomitant squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and mycosis fungoides (MF) within the same lesion are exceedingly rare, with only 3 cases previously reported. Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) predisposes patients to malignancies because of immune dysregulation, and treatments such as narrow-band ultraviolet-B phototherapy increase carcinogenic risk. We describe a 78-year-old man with stage IVA1 CTCL who presented with a scaly, painful tumor on his left temple. Biopsy revealed well-differentiated SCC with atypical lymphoid infiltrate consistent with MF, marked by immunohistochemical positivity for CD

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a radiation therapy that utilizes the alpha rays produced by the thermal neutron capture reaction of boron nuclei. With BNCT, only unresectable head and neck cancer (HNC) is currently covered by medical insurance in Japan. Some authors have reported the outcomes of BNCT for HNC, but individual case reports are lacking; therefore, the detailed clinical course of such patients remains poorly understood. Herein, we report a case of BNCT treatment for an unresectable residual lesion of external auditory canal carcinoma. A 59-year-old man was diagnosed with s

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the sixth most common cancer globally. Patient survival varies depending on tumour stage and oral cavity subsites. Buccal mucosa neoplasia is rare and burdened by worse prognosis than other oral subsites, showing a high rate of loco-regional relapses within six months after treatment. According to NCCN guidelines, the gold standard treatment is radical surgery. In the oral cavity, the buccal mucosa subsite lacks anatomical barriers opposing neoplastic growth. At this level, the tumour cells could hypothetically spread along the fibres of the p

Common metastasis sites for cervical cancer are the lungs, bones, liver, brain, ovaries, and lymph nodes, among other sites. Skin metastasis is very uncommon, and is only observed in approximately 1% of patients. The cancer spreads typically through lymphatic or blood vessels, but a definitive example of lymphatic spread has not been documented thoroughly in the existing literature. Cutaneous metastasis may be confused with cellulitis or a rash; hence, an immediate cutaneous biopsy of any suspicious lesions is recommended. There is no consensus regarding the treatment of this condition. Only o

BACKGROUND The columella has many fundamental functions, such as nasal breathing and support of the nasal tip, in addition to the aesthetic role it plays. The columella is one of the most difficult nasal subunits, both from the point of view of disease control and from that of reconstruction. Lesions involving the columella can be difficult to control, and malignancies can spread to the septum, subcutaneous tissues of the lip, and floor of the nasal cavities. Many columella reconstruction methods after resection have been proposed (local nasal flaps, skin grafts, regional flaps, free flaps), d

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report the management of chemoimmunotherapy-resistant ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) with iodine-125 (I-125) brachytherapy.
METHODS: A 36-year-old man presented to the clinic with biopsy-proven OSSN that covered ∼70% of the corneal surface and extended to the 6 o'clock position of the inferior limbus of the OS. The visual acuity was 20/20 in the OD and 20/40 in the affected OS. He was treated with topical interferon alpha-2b 1 MIU/mL (4 times daily [QID] for 6 weeks) and then 4 cycles of topical 5-fluorouracil 1% (QID, 1 week on, 3 weeks off

AIMS: In recent years, patients with programmed cell death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1)-positive oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have been able to benefit from immunotherapy. However, method for improving the treatment efficacy of PD-L1-positive patients is a problem that needs further consideration. Studies on the relationship between human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and PD-L1 expression have recently been reported in certain cancers, but the relationship between PD-L1 and HER2 expression in OSCC is still unclear.
METHODS: A total of 263 patients with OSCC were included in the

OBJECTIVES: The digastric muscles have important roles in swallowing, chewing, speech, and landmark identification during neck dissection. The posterior belly of the digastric muscle (PBDM) is often useful for defining boundaries in surgical neck dissection as it contributes to the carotid, submandibular, and submental triangles. The cadaveric prevalence rate of anatomic variations in the digastrics has been reported to be 31.4% of the population with most occurring in relation to the anterior belly of the digastric muscle (ABDM). Few reports describe variations in the PBDM. While anatomic var

Concurrent cervical cancer with advanced pelvic organ prolapse is rare: there are no well-established treatment recommendations. It is hypothesized that chronic irritation, as with long-standing pelvic organ prolapse, may lead to dysplasia and human papillomavirus-independent carcinoma, which represents only 5% of cervical cancers. Two patients with complete uterine procidentia were referred to gynecologic oncology with cervical squamous cell carcinoma; both were clinically staged as International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics IB3. Treatment planning was complicated by procidentia i

Background and Objectives: Total laryngectomy with partial pharyngectomy is traditionally the principal curative treatment for hypopharyngeal cancer; however, conservative surgical approaches that minimize functional disability are attracting increasing interest. Thus, we evaluated the appropriateness and oncological outcomes of open conservation surgery for such patients. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 49 patients who underwent vertical hemipharyngolaryngectomy from 1998 to 2018 at a single institution. Results: Locoregional recurrences developed in 19 patients (38.

BACKGROUND: International guidelines recommend tailoring the radicality of hysterectomy according to the known preoperative tumor characteristics in patients with early-stage cervical cancer.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether increased radicality had an effect on 5-year disease-free survival in patients with early-stage cervical cancer undergoing radical hysterectomy. The secondary aims were 5-year overall survival and pattern of recurrence.
STUDY DESIGN: This was an international, multicenter, retrospective study from the Surveillance in Cervical CANcer (SCCAN) collaborative coh
