Evaluating the efficacy of the ResNet50 deep learning model utilizing thyroid scintigraphy images for predicting the outcomes of initial iodine-131 therapy in patients with Graves' disease.

BACKGROUND: Graves' disease (GD), a leading cause of hyperthyroidism, exhibits heterogeneous responses to iodine-131 therapy, underscoring the need for accurate predictive tools. While pertechnetate ( 99m TcO 4- ) thyroid scintigraphy provides essential functional insights, its clinical utility is restricted by limited resolution and the subjective interpretation of results. Deep learning emerges as a promising approach for extracting prognostic features from imaging data. OBJECTIVE: This research seeks to construct a radiomic model employing deep learning methodologies, utilizing thyroid sci

Differences in swallowing efficacy of disease modifying treatment between infants receiving pre-symptomatic and symptomatic administration.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy causes progressive motor neuron degeneration that impedes an infant's ability to maintain full oral nutrition and manage secretions. Development of pharmaceuticals that halt neuromuscular degeneration have enabled survival and improvement in motor function, with infants who receive treatment before symptoms exhibiting better outcomes than those who receive treatment after symptom onset. Little is known about the impact of treatment timing on swallowing. We retrospectively evaluated swallowing biomechanics and function among infants who received a disease mod

Task-Based Spinal fMRI using a Median Nerve Stimulation Reveals Functional Alterations in Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy.

Functional spinal cord MRI (fMRI) is an emerging technique for evaluating sensorimotor responses in both healthy and disease states. However, degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM), a non-traumatic, age-related pathology characterized by spinal cord compression, often leads to motor and sensory impairments that make standard task-based fMRI paradigms challenging to perform or execute. To overcome this, we implemented an fMRI paradigm using direct electrical stimulation to the median nerve to evoke neural responses in both motor and sub-motor spinal cord pathways. In this study, 23 DCM and 23 a

Retinal Ganglion Cell Senescence Links Diabetes to Retinal Neurodegeneration.

Background Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness worldwide and traditionally considered a microvascular complication. However, accumulating evidence indicates that retinal neurodegeneration is also crucial in DR pathogenesis. Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), the output neurons of the retina, are particularly vulnerable to diabetic stress. Cellular senescence has been implicated in diabetes-related tissue damage, but its contribution to RGC degeneration remains unclear. We hypothesized that diabetes contributes to retinal neurodegeneration by inducing senescence in RGCs. Metho

Changes in brain functional connectivity and clinical correlations in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: a longitudinal resting-state fMRI study.

OBJECTIVES: Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD) affects the optic nerves and spinal cord, but its longitudinal effects on brain function remain unclear. This study aims to examine changes in brain functional connectivity over time in NMOSD patients and assess their correlation with clinical outcomes, and explore whether shifts in connectivity, especially within the default-mode hub Brodmann area 23 (BA23), are indicative of changes in clinical status. METHODS: Clinical assessments and resting-state fMRI data were analysed from 31 non-relapsing NMOSD patients at baseline and during

Progressive brain function changes in patients with neuromyelitis optica: insights from resting-state fMRI.

Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a neuroinflammatory disease marked by severe attacks on the optic nerves and spinal cord. While it is established that NMO affects brain function, the detailed progression of these impacts over time remains poorly investigated. The objective of this study is to investigate spontaneous temporal changes in brain function in patients with NMO and to explore the associations between these changes and clinical assessment. This longitudinal study recruited 31 non-relapsing patients with NMO, for whom resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data were collected at baseline

TGF-β Signaling in Cranial Neural Crest Affects Late-Stage Mandibular Bone Resorption and Length.

Malocclusions are common craniofacial malformations which cause quality of life and health problems if left untreated. Unfortunately, the current treatment for severe skeletal malocclusion is invasive surgery. Developing improved therapeutic options requires a deeper understanding of the cellular mechanisms responsible for determining jaw bone length. We have recently shown that neural crest mesenchyme (NCM) can alter jaw length by controlling recruitment and function of mesoderm-derived osteoclasts. Exploring sensory alterations and repetitive behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder from the perspective of artificial neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Restrictive repetitive behaviors (RRBs) and sensory processing disorders are core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Their relationship is reported, but existing data are conflicting as to whether they are related but distinct, or different aspects of the same phenomenon. AIMS: This study investigates this relationship using artificial neural networks (ANN) analysis and an innovative data mining analysis known as Auto Contractive Map (Auto-CM), which allows to discover hidden trends and associations among complex networks of variables (e.g. biological systems). METHODS A
