BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Impaired healing is a feared complication with devastating outcomes for each patient. Most studies focus on geriatric fracture fixation and assess well known risk factors such as infections. However, risk factors, others than infections, and impaired healing of proximal femur fractures in non-geriatric adults are marginally assessed. Therefore, this study aimed to identify non-infection related risk factors for impaired fracture healing of proximal femur fractures in non-geriatric trauma patients.
METHODS: This study included non-geriatric patients (aged 69 years and young

INTRODUCTION: Ankle fractures in geriatric patients can be devastating injuries, as they limit an individual's mobility, autonomy, and quality of life. This study examines the functional outcomes and complications related to hindfoot nails (HFN) in geriatric patients who have suffered an ankle malleolar or distal tibia fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a single-surgeon case-series of patients who underwent HFN for acute fixation or delayed reconstruction after an ankle or distal tibia fracture. Demographic information, comorbidities, baseline functional status, AO/OTA classification, s

PURPOSE: To evaluate the intra- and interobserver reliability of a scoring system for distal radius fracture union based on specific radiographic parameters obtainable from x-rays.
METHODS: Two sets of 35 anteroposterior and lateral x-rays were obtained by retrospective review of consecutive patients with distal radius fractures (AO types A and C) treated by a single surgeon in 2009. One set was assembled for those patients treated nonsurgically and 1 set for those treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with volar plating. Radius union scoring system (RUSS) scores were compi

INTRODUCTION: The thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a rare complication of clavicular fracture, occurring in 0.5-9% of cases. In the literature from 1965 - 2010, 425 cases of TOS complicating a claviclular fracture were described. However, only 5 were observed after a surgical procedure of reduction and fixation. The causes of this complication were due to the presence of an exuberant callus, to technical surgery errors or to vascular lesions. In this paper we describe a case of brachial plexus plasy after osteosynthesis of clavicle fracture.
CASE REPORT: A 48 year old female, presented to us

Comminuted quadrilateral plate fracture with medial displacement is a technically difficult fracture to treat. Minimal bone stock, proximity to the hip joint with limited surgical access, and difficulty in obtaining a stable fixation at this area, contribute to the surgical challenge of open reduction and internal fixation. Fixation of a medial buttress plate in an infrapectineal fashion is a well-described technique to address such fractures. However, this plate alone may be inadequate to buttress all the fragments in a grossly comminuted quadrilateral plate fracture. An additional spring pla

Patellar osteochondral fractures with no dislocation are uncommon and usually affect the centromedial facet of the patella. We present the case of a 10 year-old, overweight, female patient. She was seen in the emergency room after suffering an accidental fall, assessed as an osteochondral fracture-dislocation of the right patella with upper-outer displaced free fragments. By patient interview, she referred to no previous episodes of patellar dislocation. To complete the study, we performed an MRI which showed a medial facet patellar fracture, with two osteochondral fragments located in the sub

RATIONALE: Pan-carpal dissociation is very rare injury and there is little information as to diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of this injury.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 35-year-man presented to our hospital with severe pain and swelling of the left wrist and forearm after slipping and falling while riding a motorcycle.
DIAGNOSIS: The wrist simple radiographs demonstrated unrecognizable severe fracture-dislocation of the carpal bones concomitant with fractures of the radioulnar shaft. Three-dimensional computed tomography revealed a capitate fracture-dislocation, as well as hamate dislocation, lu

BACKGROUND: The proximal phalanx (PP) of the fingers is fractured more frequently than the middle or even distal phalanges. The problems of malunion, stiffness and sometimes loss of skin or other soft tissues associated with PP fracture increases the disability. The optimum treatment depends on fracture location, fracture geometry and fracture stability. The objective of the study was to analyse the treatment outcome in a series of closed proximal phalangeal fractures of the hand.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-four proximal phalangeal fractures in 68 patients were enrolled from 2007 to 2009.

OBJECTIVES: Open wounds occur with calcaneus fracture from direct application of force and from tearing along the medial side of the fracture as the tuberosity displaces laterally. Secondary soft tissue injury can also occur from pressure of the displaced fracture fragments. Tongue-type fractures of the calcaneus lead to variable amounts of displacement of the posterior tuberosity. This displacement may threaten the posterior soft tissue envelope. Because many calcaneus fractures are splinted initially and immobilized for several weeks until swelling resolves, failure to acutely recognize the

BACKGROUND: Periosteal entrapment (PE) in displaced distal tibial Salter-Harris (S-H) II fractures is considered a risk for growth disturbances, but causality is debated.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: To investigate whether PE is an independent risk factor for growth disturbances in distal tibial S-H II physeal fractures and to compare the clinical efficacy of different treatment methods.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 27 patients (2015 to 2024) with distal tibial S-H II fractures and confirmed PE [magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): n=21; follow-up radiograph: n=6]. Patients received c

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Avulsion fractures of the intercondylar eminence (ICE) of the tibia have become increasingly frequent in older school age. Due to recent advances in arthroscopic techniques, it is now possible to treat them by minimally invasive methods. This retrospective study presents evaluation of clinical outcomes of an arthroscopic technique using crossed K-wires.
MATERIAL: Thirty-five patients with ICE avulsion fracture, 17 girls and 18 boys at an average age of 13 years (7-18), were included in this study. All were indicated for surgical treatment on the basis of radiographic evi

Total talar dislocation without a fracture is an extremely rare injury. It is often the result of high-energy trauma, such as that incurred after a fall, or owing to motor or vehicular accidents. Talar dislocations have poor outcomes owing to the frequent complications of infection, avascular necrosis and osteoarthritis attributed to open dislocations. We report herein a closed total talar dislocation without a fracture in a college athlete who was injured during sports activities. Specifically, a 20-year-old man was injured during a soccer game this led to a closed total talar dislocation. We

OBJECTIVE: Open reduction and internal fixation is presently the treatment of choice for distal femur fractures. Anatomic reconstruction of the articular surface and restoration of biomechanical relations to the diaphysis are desired. A method to determine sagittal alignment on plain radiographs is warranted.
METHODS: Consecutive adult, normal, distal femur/knee, plain lateral radiographs and scanned and digitalized cadaveric distal femurs were analyzed. Measurement of 7 different angles was performed.
RESULTS: Ninety-four adults [39 men (41.5%) and 55 women (58.5%)] with a mean age of 54 ye

INTRODUCTION: The treatment goal for diaphyseal forearm fractures in adults is to restore axial and rotational stability. The treatment of these fractures with intrmaedullary locked nailing remains sparse. We therefore evaluated IM nails for treating forearm diaphyseal fractures in adults.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed adult patients with isolated unilateral or bilateral fractures of the radius, ulna, or both, who were treated with closed or mini open reduction with a new IM nail between May 2008 and January 2012 and who were followed for a least 1 year. Patients with a Galeazzi fractu

OBJECTIVES: Titanium Elastic Nail (TEN) fixation provides superior clinical and cosmetic outcomes with fewer complications compared to plating or Kirschner wire fixation in pediatric clavicle fractures.
BACKGROUND: Clavicle fractures account for about 10% of all paediatric fractures. In displaced or unstable cases, surgical fixation is increasingly advocated. Titanium elastic nails (TEN) offer a minimally invasive intramedullary fixation option, but outcomes in children remain less widely documented.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort design study.
SETTING: Single tertiary care center.

BACKGROUND: Forged composites of raw particulate unsintered hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide (F-u-HA/PLLA) implants are widely used in surgeries because they possess high mechanical strength, bioactivity, and radio-opacity. We previously reported that F-u-HA/PLLA implants were useful for treating lateral tibial condylar, lateral humeral condylar, and ankle fractures. The study aim was to investigate the efficacy of F-u-HA/PLLA cannulated screws and FiberLoop® for treating transverse patellar fractures.
METHODS: From April 2013 to February 2019, 15 patients with transverse patellar fractures were
