PURPOSE: To describe the clinical presentation, management, and outcomes of orbital and adnexal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in an Asian-Indian cohort and analyze the factors predictive of outcomes.
METHODS: Retrospective interventional case series of 54 patients of histopathology-proven RMS.
RESULTS: The mean age of presentation with RMS was 10 years (median, 7 years; range, <1-54 years). The most common tumor location was the superonasal quadrant (n = 21, 39%). Extensions beyond the orbit into the sinuses, temporal fossa, and brain were seen in 15 (28%), 3 (6%), and 8 (15%), respectively. First-

We adapt our recently developed constraint-based orbital-optimized excited-state method (COOX) for the computation of core excitations. COOX is a constrained density functional theory (cDFT) approach based on excitation amplitudes from linear-response time-dependent DFT (LR-TDDFT), and has been shown to provide accurate excitation energies and excited-state properties for valence excitations within a spin-restricted formalism. To extend COOX to core-excited states, we introduce a spin-unrestricted variant which allows us to obtain orbital-optimized core excitations with a single constraint. Us

Orbital cavernous hemangiomas are the most common benign orbital tumors in adults, typically presenting as slowly progressive, painless proptosis. These lesions can lead to cosmetic concerns, optic nerve compression, and, in severe cases, visual impairment. Timely diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial. This case report presents the diagnostic approach, management, and follow-up of a patient with a slow-flow orbital cavernous hemangioma, adhering to conservative management principles. A 37-year-old woman presented with a six-month history of progressive left eye proptosis without vis

BACKGROUND: Orbital infarction syndrome (OIS) is a rare entity defined as acute ischemia of intraorbital structures. Its occurrence requires interruption of the rich collateral supply to the orbit from both the ophthalmic artery (OA) and branches of the external carotid artery. Three case reports have recently been published of OIS occurring after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). The goal of this study was to determine the true incidence of post-EVT OIS and to identify associated imaging findings on computed tomography angiography and digital subtraction angiography (DSA).
METHODS: A retrospe

INTRODUCTION: A simple orbital lymphatic malformation usually presents with acute proptosis with ophthalmoplegia after an upper respiratory tract infection. Various treatments have been described but the lesions often recur after treatment due to their infiltrative nature.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: A 6-year-old girl presented with a 5 × 10 mm translucent mass in the left inferior fornix for 3 years but she denied diplopia and visual disturbance. Orbital computed tomography with contrast emphasized the clinical findings, a nonseptated cystic lesion without enhancement in the anterior orbit. The lesi

BACKGROUND: Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the ethmoid sinus with orbital involvement in an adult is very rare, with 16 reported cases in the literature. Immunohistochemical studies show small blue round cells positive for CD99 and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) testing reveals positivity for the EWSR1 gene.
METHODS: A 38-year-old male with a diagnosis of ES of the ethmoid sinus presented with left-sided periorbital pain and edema, rhinorrhea, and proptosis. The patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgical resection of the left skull base, and postoperative proton radiotherapy.

This case presents a 12-year-old male patient diagnosed with preseptal cellulitis that progressed to a subperiosteal orbital abscess and eventually intracranial extension, despite outpatient antibiotic therapy. Initially treated with oral antibiotics for left eyelid swelling and pain, his condition worsened, prompting hospital admission and eventual surgical intervention. Imaging revealed multiple abscesses and a hematoma, causing mass effect on the globe and extraocular muscles. Despite aggressive medical management, surgical drainage was required, including a craniotomy for drainage of an ep

The authors report the first case of generalized lipodystrophy with orbital inflammatory symptoms. A 6-year-old female with hypothyroidism who developed hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, and progressive loss of subcutaneous fat. Following flu vaccination, she developed orbital inflammatory symptoms. Imaging of the orbits demonstrated a paucity of retrobulbar fat and fat stranding. Systemic workup revealed insulin resistance and hepatosteatosis, consistent with generalized lipodystrophy. The authors discuss the typical history and examination findings in generalized lipodystrophy and review

We have investigated the 3d orbital excitations in CaCuO_{2} (CCO), Nd_{2}CuO_{4} (NCO), and La_{2}CuO_{4} (LCO) using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. In LCO they behave as well-localized excitations, similarly to several other cuprates. On the contrary, in CCO and NCO the d_{xy} orbital clearly disperses, pointing to a collective character of this excitation (orbiton) in compounds without apical oxygen. We ascribe the origin of the dispersion as stemming from a substantial next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) orbital superexchange. Such an exchange leads to the liberation of the o

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common in up to 50% of patients with facial fractures. Orbital fractures account for 25% of all facial fractures. The authors sought to determine the prevalence and risk factors for TBI in patients undergoing orbital fracture repair (OFR) and assess the impact of TBI on surgical timing. A retrospective review of trauma patients who underwent OFR at a single trauma center from 2015 to 2020 was conducted. Excluded were patients <18 years old and those with unreported GCS on presentation. TBI was defined as GCS <15 or any neurological symptom on presentation. TBI w

While high-entropy alloys, high-entropy oxides, and high-entropy hydroxides, are advanced as a novel frontier in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution, their inherent activity deficiency poses a major challenge. To achieve the unlimited goal to tailor the structure-activity relationship in multicomponent systems, entropy-driven composition engineering presents substantial potential, by fabricating high-entropy anion-regulated transition metal compounds as sophisticated oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts. Herein, a versatile 2D high-entropy metal phosphorus trisulfide is developed as a prom

This contribution gives basic information about the mechanical behavior of the facial part of the human skull cranium, i.e., the splanchnocranium, associated with external loads and injuries caused mainly by brachial violence. The main areas suffering from such violence include the orbit, frontal, and zygomatic bones. In this paper, as a first approach, brachial violence was simulated via quasi-static compression laboratory tests, in which cadaveric skulls were subjected to a load in a testing machine, increasing till fractures occurred. The test skulls were also used for research into the dyn

A 4-year-old boy was referred to our tertiary hospital after a penetrating adnexal injury by a large-breed dog to the left orbital area. There was an increase in lacrimation, which was thought to be due to an inflammatory reaction. However, it was discovered that the lacrimation increased in the reverse-Trendelenburg position and with the Valsalva maneuver. Halo sign and beta transferrin test were positive, which led to the diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula, and the patient was operated using a supraorbital craniotomy. A dural tear was visualized and sutured appropriately, then fi
