The body mass index (BMI) of both fertile and infertile females was in the overweight category (27.98±0.87 and 28.18±0.59, respectively). The prevalence and nutritional status of adolescent Saudi girls with disordered eating.

This study on adolescents was intended to assess the prevalence of disordered eating attitudes and the nutritional status of adolescent girl … Anorexia nervosa was common among 0⋅3 % of the girls. The eating disordered adolescents were either overweight (7⋅7 %), obese (10⋅3 %), stunted (7⋅7 %) or severely stunted (2⋅6 %). ANOVA revealed that the BMI-for-age was influenced by age (P = 0⋅028), the type of ED (P = 0⋅019) and the EAT-26 (P < 0⋅0001). Pearson's correlation showed that the EAT-26 score i …

Genetics, epigenetics and transgenerational transmission of obesity in children.

Sedentary lifestyle and consumption of high-calorie foods have caused a relentless increase of overweight and obesity prevalence at all ages. Its presently epidemic proportion is disquieting due to the tight relationship of obesity with metabolic syndrome and several other comorbidities which do call for urgent workarounds. The usual ineffectiveness of present therapies and failure of prevention campaigns triggered overtime a number of research studies which have unveiled some relevant aspects of obesity genetic and epigenetic inheritable profiles. These findings are revealing extremely precio…

Quadratic relations of BMI with depression and brain volume in children: Analysis of data from the ABCD study.

BACKGROUND: Weight-related health conditions and depression peak during adolescence and show relations with brain structure. Understanding how these conditions relate to each other prior to adolescence may guide research on the co-development of unhealthy weight conditions (both underweight and overweight) and depression, with a potential brain-based link. This study examines the cross-sectional relations between body mass index (BMI), depressive symptoms, and brain volume (total and regional) to determine whether BMI has a linear or quadratic relation with depressive symptoms and brain volume…

Change in eating disorder symptoms following pediatric obesity treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether children with overweight or obesity participating in an evidence-based treatment, family-based behavioral treatment (FBT) for obesity, or a parent-only variant of FBT (PBT), experience an increase of eating disorder (ED) symptoms during and following treatment. METHOD: Children (N = 150) participating in a randomized controlled trial of FBT or PBT completed measures of EDs attitudes and behaviors at baseline, following 6-months of treatment, 6 months, and 18 months after treatment. RESULTS: Linear-mixed effects models suggest that E…

The obesity conundrum in sepsis.

While the long-term negative effects of obesity on health is a well-studied phenomenon, its effects on acute illnesses seem to be the contrary. Several studies have indicated the possibility of an 'obesity paradox' in sepsis - where overweight and obese patients have better outcomes than normal weight patients. These meta-analyses including large numbers of patients across different countries raised an interesting but debatable topic. Results from meta-analyses of observational studies should be interpreted with caution, and a prove of association not be mistaken as prove of causality. Limitat…

Our results indicate that overweight or obesity is a strong risk factor of cancer incidence at several cancer sites. Genders, populations, and menopausal status are important factors effecting the association between obesity and cancer incidence for certain cancer types.

The Role of Mechanical Stress in Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Mechanical stress can act as a possible trigger in the development of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). The mechanical stress has been supported by (1) the special biomechanical conditions in the typically topographic areas of HS; (2) the indirect proof of similar findings in associated follicular occlusion diseases such as acne mechanica and pilonidal sinus disease, and in limb amputees after expression of mechanical forces; (3) pathohistologic, ultrasonography, and immunologic findings; and (4) overweight patients seem to be most susceptible to the effects of mechanical stress.

Strategies to prevent weight gain in workplace and college settings: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of self-management, dietary, physical activity, and/or environmental strategies for the prevention of weight gain among adults in work and college settings. METHOD: We conducted a systematic review of work/college-based studies that intervened on adults using one or more of the above strategies with follow up over at least a 12-month period. We excluded studies with a weight loss component. Our weight outcomes included body mass index (BMI), weight, and waist circumference. RESULTS: We included 7 work- and 2 college-based interventional studies, which

[Significance of physical activity in childhood--a cardiometabolic view].

Unfavorable diet and lack of physical activity are frequently underlying childhood and juvenile obesity. Recommendations for physical activity advise children under school age to move at least two hours per day and children of school age at least 1 to 2 hours per day. The fact that these recommendations are, however, not met among Finnish children, is reflected in physical activity also in adulthood. Immobility and obesity often develop into a mutually reinforcing vicious circle that predisposes to an increasingly early appearance of cardiometabolic risk factors.

Risk factors for first time incidence sciatica: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Characteristically, sciatica involves radiating leg pain that follows a dermatomal pattern along the distribution of the sciatic nerve. To our knowledge, there are no studies that have investigated risk factors associated with first time incidence sciatica. The purpose of the systematic review was to identify the longitudinal risk factors associated with first time incidence sciatica and to report incidence rates for the condition. For the purposes of this review, first time incidence sciatica was defined as either of the following: 1) no prior history of sciatica or 2)

Atypical antipsychotics and weight gain.

This article reviews what is known about weight gain associated with the use of atypical antipsychotics and focuses on relative liability for weight gain with the different agents, correlates of weight gain, putative mechanisms, and management strategies. Data on weight gain from short- and long-term studies with the different atypical antipsychotics are presented. A number of sociodemographic variables--including patient age, ethnicity, and baseline weight--that may have a correlation with weight gain with atypical antipsychotics are considered. Mechanisms that may be involved in antipsychoti
