Transepithelial Corneal Cross-linking With Supplemental Oxygen in Keratoconus: 1-Year Clinical Results.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of transepithelial corneal cross-linking (CXL) with supplemental oxygen. METHODS: This was a prospective, non-comparative, pilot cohort study conducted at the National Reference Center for Keratoconus (Toulouse, France) on patients with progressive keratoconus. Transepithelial, pulsed, accelerated CXL was performed in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. Oxygen goggles were applied to the eyes to maintain a high level of oxygen during treatment. The main efficacy outcome was the mean change from baseline in maximum keratometry (Kmax) and the secondary outcom

High-flow nasal oxygen in patients with COVID-19-associated acute respiratory failure.

PURPOSE: Whether the use of high-flow nasal oxygen in adult patients with COVID-19 associated acute respiratory failure improves clinically relevant outcomes remains unclear. We thus sought to assess the effect of high-flow nasal oxygen on ventilator-free days, compared to early initiation of invasive mechanical ventilation, on adult patients with COVID-19. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre cohort study using a prospectively collected database of patients with COVID-19 associated acute respiratory failure admitted to 36 Spanish and Andorran intensive care units (ICUs). Main exposure was the

Oxygen Vacancies-Rich Heterojunction of Ti3 C2 /BiOBr for Photo-Excited Antibacterial Textiles.

Pathogenic bacteria that adhere on the surface of textiles, especially healthcare workers' uniforms, have brought severe problems, including nosocomial infection and other infectious diseases. Here, antibacterial textiles are fabricated by in situ growing oxygen vacancies (OVs) BiOBr on the surface of Ti3 C2 nanosheets followed by in situ polymerization of polypyrrole (ppy). The formed Schottky heterojunction containing OVs of Ti3 C2 /BiOBr effectively enhance the transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers, inhibit the recombination, and decrease the band gap by introducing defect leve

The Performance of Digital Monitoring Devices for Oxygen Saturation and Respiratory Rate in COPD: A Systematic Review.

Healthcare access and delivery for individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who live in remote areas or who are susceptible to contracting communicable diseases, such as COVID-19, may be a challenge. Telehealth and remote monitoring devices can be used to overcome this issue. However, the accuracy of these devices must be ensured before forming healthcare decisions based on their outcomes. Therefore, a systematic review was performed to synthesize the evidence on the reliability, validity and responsiveness of digital devices used for tracking oxygen saturation (SpO2) and/

Application of Intelligent Monitoring of Percutaneous Partial Oxygen Pressure in Evaluating the Evolution of Scar Hyperplasia.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The study aimed to investigate the dynamic changes of percutaneous partial oxygen pressure during the development and evolution of a hypertrophic scar. Twenty cases of hypertrophic scar patients at different stages were selected. A percutaneous oxygen monitor was used to measure oxygen partial pressure in the scar and normal skin tissue at 14, 30, 60, and 90 days after surgery. The changes of oxygen partial pressure, tissue structure, HIF-1α, and VEGF expression in the scar tissue were observed, and the correlation was analyzed. In the scar maturation process, with the prolongation of time, th

Detection of Low Oxygen Microenvironments in a Murine Model of Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis Using Pimonidazole.

Infection tissue microenvironments are dynamic, complex, and play a critical role in host-microbe interaction outcomes. A crucial parameter of the infection site microenvironment is oxygen. Both host and microbial cell physiology is significantly impacted by the availability of oxygen. When oxygen tensions drop to levels that do not meet the metabolic demands of the cell, a hypoxia response ensues. In numerous host-microbe studies, it has now been observed that the host and microbial hypoxia response plays a critical role in disease outcomes. However, in most pathosystems, spatial and temporal

Estimation of maximal oxygen uptake from the 3,000 m run in adult men and women.

The 3,000 m run is a frequently used field test for evaluating aerobic fitness. The test has previously been validated using smaller sample sizes and with focus restricted to the correlation between run performance and maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max). The aim of the present study was to generate equations for converting 3,000 m performance into predicted V̇O2max , and present corresponding validity statistics. In total 259 (30 female) military cadets and recruits (18-39 years) participated in the study. The subjects carried out a 3,000 m run and a direct treadmill V̇O2max test. The Pearson r b

Low arterial oxygen partial pressure induces pulmonary thrombocytopenia in patients and a mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Recent basic studies demonstrate that the lung is a primary organ of platelet biogenesis. However, whether the pathophysiological state of the lung affect the platelets is little known. We aim to investigate the incidence of thrombocytopenia in patients with pulmonary infection (PIN) and risk factors associated with pulmonary thrombocytopenia. METHODS: In total, 11,941 patients with pulmonary infection (PIN) were enrolled, and patients with other three infectious diseases were collected as controls. The incidence of thrombocytopenia was compared, and the risk factors associated wi

Veno-venous extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation-assisted right tracheal-sleeve pneumonectomy.

Tracheal sleeve pneumonectomy for lung cancer is an old technique, and it is reserved for exceptional cases with tracheal carina involvement. Intra-operative airways management of this operation is incredibly complex, involving thoracic surgeons, anaesthesiologists and pulmonologists. We report a case of a 38-year-old male with no clinical history, referred to our department for an adenoid-cystic carcinoma involving distal trachea, carina and main right bronchus. Tracheal sleeve pneumonectomy was performed using extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). A veno-venous ECMO circuit was establ

Iron sulphide rice grain nanostructures as potential electrocatalysts for an improved oxygen evolution reaction.

Iron based chalcogenides are considered a promising group of electro-active materials for various electrochemical technologies. Herein we demonstrate a facile fabrication of various iron sulphide (FeS) nanostructures, including rice grains (RGS)-, nanoflowers (NFS)- and nanoparticles (NPS)-like surface morphologies via electrochemical, solvothermal and chemical strategies, respectively. The as-developed FeS nanostructures have been employed as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline electrolyte. Among other FeS nanostructures, FeS rice grains (FeS-RGS) exhibited

Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation Cadaver Donors: What about Tissues Used as Allografts?

Several studies demonstrated the efficacy of post-mortem extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) on donors in preserving organ function addressing organ transplantation. Nevertheless, no common and shared evidence was reached about the possibility of using ECMO donors in tissue harvesting. Therefore, this work aimed first to review the current scientific literature about ECMO donors, and then to focus on the use of ECMO tissues as allografts, mainly addressing musculoskeletal tissues, which are of the most interest for reconstruction. A search was conducted on the current scientific literat

Measurement of Tissue Oxygen as a Novel Approach to Optimizing Red Blood Cell Quality Assessment.

The effectiveness of blood transfusions can be impacted by storage and extensive processing techniques that involve treatment of red blood cells (RBCs) with pathogen reduction technologies (e.g., UV-light and chemical treatment), ex vivo stem cell derivation/maturation methods, and bioengineering of RBCs using nanotechnology. Therefore, there is a need to have methods that assess the evaluation of the effectiveness of transfusions to achieve their intended purpose: to increase oxygenation of critical tissues. Consequently, there has been intense interest in the development of techniques target

Targeting Reactive Oxygen Species Capacity of Tumor Cells with Repurposed Drug as an Anticancer Therapy.

Accumulating evidence shows that elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are associated with cancer initiation, growth, and response to therapies. As concentrations increase, ROS influence cancer development in a paradoxical way, either triggering tumorigenesis and supporting the proliferation of cancer cells at moderate levels of ROS or causing cancer cell death at high levels of ROS. Thus, ROS can be considered an attractive target for therapy of cancer and two apparently contradictory but virtually complementary therapeutic strategies for the regulation of ROS to treat cancer. Desp

Reducing the risk of oxygen-related fires and explosions in hospitals treating Covid-19 patients.

On 24 April 2021, a disastrous fire in an Iraqi hospital took the lives of 82 people. Since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020, incidents of oxygen-related hospital fires in various countries around the world have caused over 200 deaths, the majority of whom were patients extremely ill with the novel Coronavirus. Fires involving medical oxygen are not a new phenomenon but are more common in the operating theatre where oxygen is routinely administered. In these settings, strict safety protocols are normally enforced and surgical staff are well trained in dealing with oxygen hazards. It

Design and Development of a Model to Study the Effect of Supplemental Oxygen on the Cystic Fibrosis Airway Microbiome.

Airway microbial communities are thought to play an important role in the progression of cystic fibrosis (CF) and other chronic pulmonary diseases. Microbes have traditionally been classified based on their ability to use or tolerate oxygen. Supplemental oxygen is a common medical therapy administered to people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF); however, existing studies on oxygen and the airway microbiome have focused on how hypoxia (low oxygen) rather than hyperoxia (high oxygen) affects the predominantly aerobic and facultative anaerobic lung microbial communities. To address this critical knowle

Cyanobacteria-based self-oxygenated photodynamic therapy for anaerobic infection treatment and tissue repair.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an important technique to deal with drug-resistant bacterial infections in the post-antibiotic era. However, the hypoxic environment in intractable infections such as refractory keratitis and periodontitis, makes PDT more difficult. In this work, spontaneous oxygen-producing cyanobacteria were used as the carrier of photosensitizer (Ce6), and ultrasmall Cu5.4O nanoparticles (Cu5.4O USNPs) with catalase activity for infection and inflammation elimination and rapid tissue repair (CeCycn-Cu5.4O). The loading of Ce6 and Cu5.4O USNPs onto cyanobacteria surface were con

Room-Temperature Palladium-Catalyzed Deuterogenolysis of Carbon Oxygen Bonds towards Deuterated Pharmaceuticals.

Site-specific incorporation of deuterium into drug molecules to study and improve their biological properties is crucial for drug discovery and development. Herein, we describe a palladium-catalyzed room-temperature deuterogenolysis of carbon-oxygen bonds in alcohols and ketones with D2 balloon for practical synthesis of deuterated pharmaceuticals and chemicals with benzyl-site (sp3 C-H) D-incorporation. The highlights of this deoxygenative deuteration strategy are mild conditions, broad scope, practicability and high chemoselectivity. To enable the direct use of D2 O, electrocatalytic D2 O-sp
