We describe here a case of bilateral chemical injury (with an expansive mortar which is being used in recent times to cut the rocks). On examination limbal ischemia was more in the left eye (9 clock hours) than the right eye (2 clock hours). The case was managed by bilateral removal of foreign bodies, along with conjunctival resection and amniotic membrane transplantation in the left eye. At six-month follow-up, patient had best corrected visual acuity of 20/30 and 20/60 in the right and left eyes respectively. Since this being an occupational hazard, proper eye protection gear should be used

A 45-year-old woman, complaining of sudden visual loss in the right eye (best-corrected visual acuity: 17/200), was suspected of having a malignant melanoma of the choroid. Fundus examination revealed a massive pale-colored subretinal mass temporal to the fovea, with adjoining choroidal folds and exudative retinal detachment. Ultrasonography was suggestive of posterior scleritis. Systemic evaluation was unremarkable. The patient was treated with high-dose systemic corticosteroids. The mass lesion resolved completely, with visual recovery to 20/20. Posterior scleritis should be suspected when e

PURPOSE: To report a new corneal iron line following keratorefractive surgery.
METHODS: Case report and review of the literature. A 51-year-old man developed epithelial ingrowth after otherwise uneventful LASIK surgery. The patient, satisfied with an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/25 and otherwise asymptomatic, declined to have his flap relifted to treat the ingrowth.
RESULTS: Six months postoperatively a corneal iron line was noted at the leading edge of the epithelial ingrowth. Vision remained stable.
CONCLUSIONS: : Epithelial iron lines have been reported with a number of conditions, in

CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 69-year-old man with a lung carcinoma history. The patient showed signs of conjuntival hyperemia, painless bilateral corneal edema, persistent epitelial defects and reported to have decreasing visual acuity for a week. The clinical examination revealed a bilateral neurotrophyc keratitis with both a decreased frequency of blinking and a bilateral atrophy mandibular muscles. Local ocular patology was excluded. Systemic exploration showed a meningeal neoplasic infiltration and metastasis on the initial trigeminal nerve stretch. In our knowledge, this is the fi

We report a patient with reactivation of presumed adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) to correct high myopia. The preoperative refraction was -13.00 diopters (D) in the right eye and -14.00 D in the left eye, and the best corrected visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. On the first postoperative day, mild conjunctival hyperemia and multiple subepithelial infiltrations localized in the flap zone consistent with adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis were seen. After prompt treatment, the lesions resolved. As a consequence, LASIK successfully corrected the high my

PURPOSE: Ten cases of unexpected corneal endothelial cell decompensation occurring after routine intraocular surgery using instruments sterilized with a new plasma gas protocol are described.
DESIGN: A retrospective observational case series with 1 year of follow-up was conducted.
RESULTS: All patients had corneal decompensation and nonreactive pupils after surgery. Six patients required penetrating keratoplasty. Three patients partially recovered pupillary function. Visual acuity at 1 year ranged from 20/20 to hand motion (HM). One patient with an anterior chamber intraocular lens (ACIOL) e

A 70-year-old woman with small-cell lung carcinoma (c-T4N2M0) was treated by six courses of combination chemotherapy (carboplatin and etoposide). After two weeks, she complained of a sense of darkness and night blindness. A Western blot analysis showed that the patient's serum bound with the recombinant 23-kDa retinal cancer-associated retinopathy (CAR) antigen at 1:1,000 dilution. Her visual acuity became so poor that she could only recognise a hand motion at 50 cm despite treatment with corticosteroids and combination chemotherapy. The patient was diagnosed as having a rare type of CAR becau

Female patient, forty-two years old, was assaulted during sleep. She was strangulated with a rubber hose. After that, she presents one horizontal strangulation trace by 1.5 cm length at the base of the neck. Under this cyanotic trace she presents one cyanotic area by 3/3 cm. The skin of face presents, several petechial areas, swelling eyelids with ecchymosis more pronounced at right eye than left eye and subconjunctival hemorrhages. The left eye presents diminuation of ocular motility. The ophthalmoscopy shows a slow passing retinal edema which recovers at treatment. The visual acuity becomes

Intracranial embryonal carcinoma is a rare germ cell tumor found predominantly in the pineal region and, to a lesser extent, in the suprasellar region. The case of a 12-year-old female with a history of secondary amenorrhea for 6 months is reported; her symptoms included decreased visual acuity, dizziness and postprandial vomiting over a 1-month period. A huge suprasellar mass was found by computed tomography. Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-HCG) levels were elevated. The tumor was subtotally resected; pathologic and immunocytochemical findings were co

The most common manifestations of Lyme disease are neurologic and rheumatologic, but ophthalmologic lesions can also occur and may even be dominant. The authors describe a case of bilateral optic neuropathy associated with Lyme borreliosis that quickly led to near-total blindness. In addition to a loss in visual acuity and field bilateral papillary edema was documented by angiofluorography. A spectacular improvement was obtained under combined antimicrobial therapy using doxycycline and corticosteroid therapy. The patient rapidly recovered full vision. These observations are discussed within t

PURPOSE: Three-wall orbital decompression was tested using a coronal approach as a technique.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three-wall orbital decompression by a coronal approach was performed in three patients with proptosis due to Grave's ophthalmopathy, in six patients with Grave's ophthalmopathy because their vision was threatened due to optic nerve compression, and in one patient with exorbitism due to Crouzon's syndrome for cosmetic rehabilitation.
RESULTS: Proptosis reduction averaged 4.7 mm. The technique provides good access to the orbital walls, facilitating adequate proptosis reduction, a

The initial assessment of blunt ocular trauma requires taking a thorough history, measuring visual acuity, evaluating pupils, extraocular muscles, intraocular pressure, and anterior adnexa, and examining the interior of the eye by means of biomicroscopy and ophthalmoscopy. More sophisticated means of examination may be necessary before treatment strategies can be determined. The most common types of injuries are contusions, abrasions, lacerations, and penetrating wounds of the eye. The most serious injuries requiring treatment are penetrating wounds, hyphemas, and retinal detachments. The init

A 52-year-old Caucasian woman with pigmentary glaucoma underwent a left cyclodiathermy procedure for raised intraocular pressure (IOP) in 1962 and right sclerectomy the following year. Over 25 years later a low IOP was still maintained though pilocarpine was needed in the left eye. After a left cataract extraction with insertion of a posterior chamber lens, field loss had not progressed very much in either eye though the visual acuity was reduced in the more affected eye. Both drainage operation and a cyclodestructive procedure controlled IOP over a long period of time in this patient and were

Anterior lenticonus is a rare condition, in which there is a conical or spherical protrusion of the anterior surface into the anterior chamber. This is demonstrated by this case report, which has not been previously described in the Black African or Zairian ophthalmological literature. The patient was 28 years old and complained of gradual deterioration of vision over several years. The visual acuity was 20/200. The slit lamp biomicroscope showed an anterior lenticonus with microopacities of the lens. On fundus examination, a fundus albipunctatus-like appearance with midperipheral retinal flec

Severe bilateral visual loss attributable to multiple retinal arteriolar occlusions occurred in four young women within 24 hours after childbirth. In two patients, labor was complicated by preeclampsia requiring cesarean section. One patient was suffering from pancreatitis. None had connective tissue disease or antecedent trauma. Ophthalmoscopy and fluorescein angiography revealed evidence of multiple superficial peripapillary and macular patches of ischemic retinal whitening simulating Purtscher's retinopathy. By 8 weeks, the white patches were resolving in all eyes and visual acuity had sign

Evidence of ocular involvement was found in seven of eleven patients with histologically confirmed Wegener's granulomatosis. Pain (7/7), redness (6/7), scleritis (5/7), reduced visual acuity (5/7), episcleritis (5/7), uveitis (3/7), proptosis, sclerokeratitis and conjunctivitis (2/7) each were the major ophthalmological features. One patient each had bilateral corneoscleral ulcers, eyelid infiltration, scleromalacia perforans and epiphora. Corneal, scleral and uveal tract involvement was observed more frequently than has been described in the literature. These complications responded favourabl

Daunorubicin has been used in the treatment of advanced cases of human posttraumatic proliferative vitreoretinopathy. To reduce the failure rate of trauma surgery from proliferative vitreoretinopathy recent efforts have been directed toward the pharmacologic inhibition of cellular reproliferation. We administered intravitreal daunorubicin to 15 patients after vitrectomy and before silicone oil or gas injection. A solution containing 7.5 micrograms/ml of daunorubicin was infused over a ten-minute period. Anatomic success was obtained in 14 patients, and one patient had a renewed traction retina

We document clinically and histopathologically the development of a uveal melanocytic tumor at the site of penetrating ocular trauma in a 34-year-old man. A metallic intraocular foreign body was extracted via the inferonasal pars plana with an electromagnet in February 1975. At that time no intraocular tumor was noted and the visual acuity returned to 20/20. The patient developed floaters in January 1981, at which time findings from fundus examination and needle biopsy of the lesion suggested the presence of a spindle-cell melanoma. The diagnosis was confirmed histopathologically following enu

Invasive aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses involving the orbit is termed sino-orbital aspergillosis. Prognosis of sino-orbital aspergillosis, complicated by impaired visual acuity and neurological signs, is disastrous and usually fatal. We herein report two patients with sino-orbital aspergillosis associated with total ophthalmoplegia. One patient was successfully treated with surgical eradication including orbital exenteration. In contrast, the other died of cerebral infarction, probably due to fungal thrombosis of the middle cerebral artery, despite repeated local debridement followed b
